Troubleshooting
How can I check ink levels of my printer?
Unfortunately most printer drivers are not able to access ink levels when the printer is plugged to the
Fonera. When your printer warns that it's out of ink, plug it back to your computer to see which cartridge
you need to change.
Ethernet enabled printers should be automatically detected, but in some cases, like if you have an actual
separate physical printer server, you might need to:
Some genuine printer drivers (e.g. Canon or Epson) do not always support remote printing. It is
recommended to use the free Guttenberg drivers when experiencing problems.

Webcam
Webcam Streaming
The Fonera 2.0n features a web base video streaming service. This page helps you to setup and view your
webcam stream.
Compatibility
Only models which have their drivers implemented in the Fonera will work. Most UVC webcams work fine.
UVC webcams is available on the driver's page. Visit as well a webcam compatibility hint.
Required software
You need to install the Webcam plugin from the Application menu of your Fonera. Then to view the video
streamed from your webcam you need a web browser with java support (Firefox, Internet explorer, Safari,
etc.). You might need to install java from: http://www.java.com
Webcam Usage
Webcams are plug'n play! When you plug a compatible webcam to the Fonera, the state of the webcam
icon on the dashboard changes. Then you just have to click on the webcam icon of your dashboard to see
its video stream:
While connected from the WAN side of your Fonera, you may access your webcam stream only if you have
enabled WebGUI access from WAN in Settings >> Firewall >> Application. Then if your computer is
connected:
From the WAN side of your Fonera (eg: from a computer connected directly to your broadband
router) browse: https://WAN.IP.OF.YOUR.FONERA (The WAN IP of your Fonera is displayed on its
dashboard). Please note that you always have to use secure HTTP to access your devices from the
WAN side. Most web browsers will automatically recognize secure HTTP if their SSL and TLS
options are enabled.
From another Internet access: You must have redirected the https port (443) to the WAN IP of
your Fonera within your broadband router interface - check its documentation to do so. Then
set Dynamic DNS in your Fonera and visit https://yourdomain.dyndns.com
You will be prompted for authentification: fonero is the username, the password is the general password of
your Fonera.

20
Fonera 2.0n (FON2303)
Here you can set the Public SSID of your Fon Spot. This is the name of the signal the other Fon
users will connect to.
You cannot change the first 4 characters, they are always 'FON_' so Fon Spot's wireless signals are
easily recognizable. We advise to stick to the default name as we noticed that it will bring more
connections to your Fon Spot!
Here you can change the settings of your private wireless interface; change the name of the signal,
encryption method and encryption key.
You can change the default WPA Passphrase for one which isn't written on Fonera's label to
increase security of private network.
Changing the channel on which your Fonera broadcasts its WiFi signals for one which is not so
busy might solve connectivity issues in some crowded environment.
Changing the Bitrate will make your Fonera broadcasts its wireless signals at the maximum speed
of 802.11b/802.11g/802.11n protocols. We advise not to change this settings so each devices can
connect at its maximum speed. More details here.
If you have a Fonera 2.0n, you may choose between HT20/HT40 mode and HT20 only mode. The
later might help you to keep a more stable connection in a crowded environment - where there is
many wireless signals broadcasted.
Choose your country from the drop-down menu. In some cases it might be necessary to choose
which country the Fonera is broadcasting through the 802.11d protocol. Check the Troubleshooting
section for more details.
21
Fonera 2.0n (FON2303)
Internet settings
From the internet settings page you can configure the way the Fonera connects to the internet. The default
setting is DHCP, it is the most commonly needed one. We advise to change that only if it can't access the
internet.
DHCP Mode
In this mode your Fonera gets its IP settings from the modem or router to which it is connected. The
default DNS server used is the one forwarded by your modem or router. Though you can manually set the
IP of another DNS server (e.g. an OpenDNS one).
Static IP Mode
Before setting your Fonera to Static IP mode, make sure this change is really necessary. Nowadays DHCP
servers can remember the MAC IDs of devices for an unlimited amount of time, or static leases can be set.
Your Fonera is likely to always be given the same IP address.
IP: Type the WAN IP that you want for your Fonera (e.g. 192.168.1.2). It must be in a
different subnet than you LAN IP (default LAN IP: 192.168.10.1).
Netmask: e.g. 255.255.255.0 more info here
Gateway: IP of your modem or router, e.g. 192.168.1.1
DNS: IP of the DNS server that you want your Fonera to use. It can be the IP of your router or the
IP of a DNS server outside of your LAN (e.g. an OpenDNS one).
22
Fonera 2.0n (FON2303)
WiFi Mode
WiFi Mode allows your Fonera to access the internet using an existing wireless signal*. i.e. you don't have
to plug your Fonera's internet/WAN port any more, the only cable needed is the power supply's one. It is
really important not make any typo when configuring your Fonera in this mode:
SSID: Name of the WiFi signal to which your Fonera will be connected.
Authentication: Type of authentication used by the WiFi signal to which your Fonera will be
connected.
Passphrase: Password used by the WiFi signal to which your Fonera will be connected.
Type: Chose DHCP if you want your Fonera to automatically get an IP assigned by the access point
to which it is connected. Choose Static IP if you want to configure it yourself.
Use Scan now button to ease WiFi Mode configuration: As shown on the screenshot bellow, it will
display the wireless signals in range of the Fonera. Clicking on Connect will automatically fill in the SSID
and Authentification type fields. Then you just need to write down the Passphrase used on the signal you
want your Fonera to connect to.
23
Fonera 2.0n (FON2303)
You can confirm that your Fonera is able to connect through the wireless connection by checking its
dashboard.
WiFi Bridge Mode allows your Fonera 2.0n to bridge your home network with the Fonera one, allowing for
easy access to all your devices from both networks. Basically, the devices connected to your Fonera will be
treated as if connected to your local network. They'll get IP from your main modem/router if it's set to
allocate IP through DHCP. Bridge mode is available for the Fonera 2.0n only (firmwares 2.3.6.0 and
above).
To setup WiFi Bridge Mode, you just have to follow the WiFi mode instructions above.
This mode comes with no warranty, many factors could prevent the Fonera to connect to an
existing signal. This mode is only available within the developer version of the firmware.

Firewall
This page allows configure the access policies between your different networks:
26
Fonera 2.0n (FON2303)
WAN: Is the Internet port of the Fonera, the one connected to a broadband modem or router.
From this page you can configure your port forwarding rules. It allows to redirect the traffic coming on the
WAN Interface (Internet port of the Fonera) to a specific IP of a computer connected to the Fonera.
Protocol: TCP, UDP or TCP and UDP. Check the documentation of the software you need to forward a
port for to know which protocol it uses.
Source Port: Number of the port. eg: 80 if you are running a webserver behind the Fonera.
IP: The IP of the computer hosting the software which need a port redirection.
Target Port: Number of the port on which the services is running on the target computer. eg: 80 if you are
running a webserver.
Port range forwarding: As of firmware 2.3.7.0 you can forward a range of ports (this was broken in all
earlier releases). To forward a range of ports, just use a dash “-“ as a separator in the source port field and
leave the target port field empty. For example “2000-3000“ to forward all ports from 2000 to 3000 to a
single IP. Note that it is not possible to forward a range of ports to a different range of ports.
If your Fonera is plugged to a router and the traffic that you want to redirect is coming from the Internet, you
also have to redirect the port from your router to the WAN IP of the Fonera so it finally reaches targeted
computer.
Note that you can generally not test port forwarding from within your own network. To test the port
forwarding, you really need to be on the WAN side of the Fonera (or on the WAN side of your modem). This
is due to a limitation in the way forwarding works. This means you should test your forwards from another
internet connection, or use a service like the Yougetsignal port forwarding tester.
27
Fonera 2.0n (FON2303)
UPnP Configuration
UPnP is enabled by default. The UPnP Protocol allows computers (or gadgets) connected to the private
signal or to LAN ports of the Fonera to open and forward the ports they need to work properly.
Note: Configuration of your broadband router might be needed if the softwares need ports open from the
internet and not just from the WAN port of the Fonera.
Applications Menu
28
Fonera 2.0n (FON2303)
This page allows to enable or disable the access from WAN to the different applications available in the
Fonera. That is to say: the access to specific services from computers that are not connected directly to the
Fonera. These computers might be connected to your broadband router or even to different Internet access
outside of your home (configuration of your broadband router might be needed in that case).
For example: If you enable access to 'Torrent' from WAN, you will be able to control Transmission torrent
client from a computer plugged to your broadband router typing:
http://IP.OF.WAN.PORT.OF.THE.FONERA:9091 (eg: http://192.168.1.133:9091).
SSH access from WAN will only be enabled if your password is complex enough. A password of at least 8
characters, including at least 1 number is compulsory. Please note that the Fonera may forgets the
complexity of your password after firmware upgrades. If you have upgraded your Fonera's firmware, you
will need to re-set the password through the Change Password dialog before SSH access will be enabled.
Note: To access the different applications available in the Fonera from the Internet, you will have to
configure the DDNS Service.
29
Fonera 2.0n (FON2303)
DDNS
You have to set the Dynamic DNS (DDNS) service of the Fonera when you want to have access to its
services (FTP, Torrent, WebGUI, etc.) from the internet. It is especially useful when your ISP does not
provide a static IP for your line, as you will always be able to access your home from the internet when
typing your DDNS domain (eg: fonera.myddns.com).
Fonera supports DDNS service provided by DynDNS.com and since firmware 2.3.7.0 several others
(changeip, zoneedit, noip, etc.). You have to create an account to be able to use these services. Usually it's
free (not anymore the case on dyndns.com). Then you have to configure the following:
Notes:

enable their access from WAN in the Firewall menu (configuration of your broadband router might
be needed in that case).
2. The Dashboard is available through port 443 (and not 80). To access it from the Internet you will
have to use "https://" and not “http://”.

Preliminary Settings
Note: the following instructions are only needed when using a Fonera 2.0g with firmware 2.3.7.0 or below.
A quick modification of Widows Vista/7 registry is needed for it to work correctly with the Samba file sharing
servers. i.e. the Fonera 2.0:
From the Start menu open folder called Accessories and launch the application called Run
Type regedit in the prompt to launch the registry editing application of windows Vista/7
In \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa change
LMCompatibilityLevel value from 3 to 1.
Reboot your computer
It turned out this was because of an endianness bug, which is fixed in 2.3.7.1.
It also turned out that the above instructions only applied to 2.0g. Fonera 2.0n already worked correctly
with Windows 7 and Vista.
While connected to the Private Signal or from a LAN port of the Fonera
5.1.1: Open a Finder window and click on "go" then on "Connect to server..."
5.1.2: Enter smb://fonera as server address
5.1.3: Select Media as the volume to mount
5.1.4: The username is fonero and cannot be changed
5.1.5: The password is the general password of your Fonera, the one used to access the
dashboard. Default one is admin
Note: Clicking on LaFonera from the finder will return a connection error. You have to use the above
method to connect to Fonera's network share on Mac OS X.
You might want to access your shared folders from the WAN side of your Fonera (eg: from a computer

QoS
Enabling QoS (Quality of Service) will make the Fonera shape your traffic to give priority to real time
applications (voice, video) and web browsing or mail over P2P traffic. This means that the Fonera will try to
make your personal traffic more fluent when you are connected so P2P or similar traffic does not make
your Internet experience slow.
When enabling QoS you will need to set Download and Upload speed of the Internet access to which the
Fonera is connected.
Note: You may test real world bandwidth available on your line with websites such as speedtest.net. If you
enter the theoretical values provided by your ISP or inflated ones, QoS will not be able to correctly prioritize
your traffic.

Fonera 2.0n (FON2303)
OpenVPN
Fonera's 2.0 VPN server allows your computers to safely access your Fonera and home network remotely.
Safe Surf feature enable access to the internet through your home internet connection even when
connected outside your home. Perfect for securing your internet traffic when using a public hotspot. More
information about VPNs can be found on Wikipedia.
OpenVPN has been available since 2.3.6.0 firmware, but its configuration differ from the one explained on
this page. Make sure run firmware version 2.3.7.0 beta1 or later before following these steps.
1. Enable OpenVPN Server from dashboard of your Fonera 2.0 in Settings >> OpenVPN
2. When saving, the Fonera will start generating encryption keys needed for OpenVPN operation. This
may take up to 10 minutes to complete.
3. When done enter your Public IP/hostname in the required field. Public IP is the IP you have when
connected to the Internet, if this IP isn't static you can use an hostname. See DDNS configuration to
get one set-up.
4. Hit Save button
5. Then you can click the plus sign to Add a new client, you'll be ask to name it, and shortly after
saving its individual encryption key and certificates will be generated.
6. Click on the Download link in front of your newly created client to obtain a zip file containing its
individual connexion files.
7. Reproduce steps 5. and 6. for as many individual client you want to connect to Fonera's OpenVPN
Server.
43
Fonera 2.0n (FON2303)
Default VPN configuration only allows clients (i.e. computers connected to VPN) to access
Fonera's Dashboard remotely. Click on Manage Security settings if you want to enable:
Local Network which allows VPN clients to access computers and devices connected to the
Fonera as if they where located in your home network.
Safe Surf which makes VPN clients redirect all internet traffic through VPN server on remote
Fonera. You will use your home IP as when surfing from home.
To connect another computer or laptop (the client) to your Fonera's OpenVPN serveur, you will have to
install and OpenVPN Client. Since you will not be using the commercial VPN service provided by
openvpn.net, but your own OpenVPN server running on your Fonera, you will need the open-source
version of OpenVPN; as opposed to OpenVPN connect software, which is tied to a specific VPN provider.
Windows
You can find an easy installer on openvpn.net. Note that during the installation you may be
prompted that TAP-win32 adapter driver has not passed Windows Logo testing. To make
OpenVPN work, you'll have to click Continue anyway.
OpenVPN software keeps its configuration files in config subdirectory. When using the default install
path, this is C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config.
Open the .zip file you downloaded in the previous step and unpack it into this config directory. If you
want to you can create a subfolder. This should be enough to make the OpenVPN software load the
configuration.
Now launch OpenVPN software from your start menu, right click the system tray icon that appears
and click connect. On Windows Vista and Windows 7 you may need to right click the start menu
icon and select Run as Administrator... to give OpenVPN the permission to change your networking
configuration. This is not required on Windows XP.
You should now be connected to your Fonera's VPN Server.
MacOS X
Linux
Your distribution will probably supply a prebuilt OpenVPN package through its usual package
manager.
To configure OpenVPN Client, unpack the zip file you downloaded in the previous step and
run sudo openvpn --config FONERA.ovpn
44
Fonera 2.0n (FON2303)
If available in your distribution you may also use NetworkManager to configure the connection. You
might need to install network-manager-openvpn (or similar) package first.
First, unpack the zip file and then right-click the NetworkManager icon in your system tray, click Edit
Connections..., go to the VPN tab and click Import button. Find FONERA.ovpn file and import it. You
can now connect to it by left-clicking the system tray icon and finding the FONERA network under
VPN.
Note that you should not delete the files from the zip after importing the configuration, since
NetworkManager imports the configuration, but still uses the other files to connect. This also means
that if you ever change the .ovpn file, you will have to re-import it.
Filebrowser
The Fonera 2.0 feature a web base file browser. It allows you to browse and interact with the files present
on the USB storage attached to the Fonera.
When a partition of a USB drive is available for file browsing, the icon on its dashboard changes. Just click
on this icon to start browsing your files.
To get access to the file browser from the Internet you will have to enable WebGUI access from WAN in
the Firewall menu (configuration of your broadband router might be needed in that case).
If more than one partition is available for browsing, the first step will be to choose which partition you will
browse. See Configure USB Disk menu to change the options and name of each partitions.
45
Fonera 2.0n (FON2303)
The browser allows you to interact with the files present in your USB drive. Each file type that can be use
by a service installed on your Fonera will feature the corresponding icon. For example a YouTube icon
appears in front of a video so you can directly upload it to YouTube, a Torrent icon appears on .torrent files
so they can directly get queued by the torrent client, or a 'play' icon appears in front of playlists and MP3 so
the Fonera is able to play them directly with its music streaming application.

UMTS/3G
The Fonera 2.0 allows you to wirelessly share your 3G broadband connection virtually anywhere. All you
will need is an activated 3G USB modem and a broadband data plan.
Fonera 2.0g: USB 1.0 and USB 1.1 3G Modem won't work directly, you will need placing a USB 2.0 hub in
between the Modem and the Fonera2.0g. In general only USB 2.0 devices can be connected directly to the
Fonera 2.0g. If you ever connect a USB 1.0/1.1 device, make sure you reboot the Fonera; this will allow it
to detect USB devices again.
To start sharing your 3G broadband with the Fonera 2.0 it is important to Configure all settings before
Connecting the 3G USB modem.
Country: Here you can choose your Country (Country where the 3G contract was subscribed) or
"Custom Config" if you rather set the dial in settings manually. Please note than the United States
are not currently listed here due to the large amount of possible configurations. Just select the
"Custom Config" and enter the parameters provided by your provider.
47
Fonera 2.0n (FON2303)
Provider: This is a list of known providers to the Fonera. If your provider is listed, it means that the
Fonera has its connection settings. If your provider is not available, you will have to chose "Custom
Configuration" in the Country drop-down menu.
PIN: Enter the PIN of your SIM card. If you do not have a PIN set, leave this field empty.
Advanced Settings
Simply plug the dongle at the Foneras USB port (with the Fonera 2.0g eventually you might need a USB
2.0 hub) and wait until the devices is recognized (about 30 seconds). If the modem is detected, the red "X"
over the 3G icon will go away. If the Configuration data was correctly set, the Fonera will automatically dial
in. Sometimes it might be necessary to reboot the router after changing the settings.
Disconnect
To disconnect the UMTS connection you have to unplug the USB modem. If you plug it in again, it will
reconnect automatically.
Status Info
There are three places where informations about the 3G connection is availalbe:
On the Dashboard. On the upper right corner a 3G simbol on nthe status icon will advice, that you
are connected by 3G.
On the status (left hand side) you get informed about the connection type: UMTS/3G.
Within the 3G application, you will find more detailed information about the signal strength,
transferred traffic volume, etc.

Fonera 2.0 series features a torrent client which allows you to download files to the USB disk connected to
your Fonera even when your computer is off. The client for the BitTorrent protocol implemented in the
Fonera is Transmission.
*Disclaimer: you should not download copyrighted material unless you have permission from the copyright
holder to do so.
52
Fonera 2.0n (FON2303)
Whenever you plug a USB disk onto which Fonera's torrent client is installed it will be listed under
the torrent menu. Click on the Startup icon of the installation of your choice to start the
corresponding transmission installation.
From the same menu, at any time, you can click on the Shutdown button to stop the torrent client.
Note that you will have to do so if you want to safely disconnect your USB disk.
To resume downloads you will just have to click on the Startup button again.
When a USB disk with ongoing downloads is plugged to the Fonera, the torrent client is
automatically started and downloads are resumed. Same happens if the Fonera reboots
unexpectedly, in the case of a power failure for example.
Paste download link of the .torrent file into the link area. eg: http://releases.ubuntu.com/9.10/ubuntu-
9.10-desktop-i386.iso.torrent as shown on the screenshot.
You may apply bandwidth limits before clicking on the Submit button.
Download progress and speed will be displayed on this same page. You are as well able to pause

While connected from the WAN side of your Fonera, you may access transmission's web interface only if
you have enabled Torrent access from WAN in Settings >> Firewall >> Application. Then if your computer
is connected:
From the WAN side of your Fonera (eg: from a computer connected directly to your broadband
router) browse: http://WAN.IP.OF.YOUR.FONERA:9091 (The WAN IP of your Fonera is displayed
on its dashboard)
From another Internet access: You must have redirected port 9091 to the WAN IP of your Fonera
within your broadband router interface - check its documentation to do so. Then set Dynamic DNS
in your Fonera and visit http://yourdomain.dyndns.com:9091
55
Fonera 2.0n (FON2303)
Additional Usage
Transmission's web interface provides additional features such as loading .torrent files from your
computer hard drive or changing incoming TCP port (default one is 51413).
See transmissionbt.com for a full list of features.
If you use Firefox as a web browser you may add new torrents or check their states using Fonera
Downloader, a Firefox add-on developed by FON.
You can also use the Transmission Remote GUI which will give you more control options over the
Transmission client emebedded in Fonera 2.0n/g. Transmission Remote GUI is faster and has more
functionality than the build-in Transmission web interface. This software can be downloaded
from here. It is available for Windows, Mac and Linux. A client for Symbian s60v3 is available here
Troubleshooting
Do I need to open a port on my broadband router to use Fonera's torrent client?
You can download torrents fine when ports on your broadband router remain closed. Though on average
you'll get faster speeds if you forward Transmission incoming TCP port (default one is 51413) from your
broadband router to Fonera's WAN IP (The WAN IP of your Fonera is displayed on its dashboard). Check
your broadband router's documentation to perform this task.
56
Fonera 2.0n (FON2303)
Beside performing badly within a linux environment (Fonera runs linux), the NTFS filesystem doesn't not
support some functionality needed for our implementation of the Transmission torrent client (loop devices
relying on mmap(). You may check USB storage usage page to choose the filesystem that suits you best.
Download Manager
The download manager allows you to remote your RapidShare downloads. Downloaded files will be stored
on a "downloads" folder on the external Hard Drive of your choice. Just make sure the desired HDD is
attached to the Fonera's USB port.
57
Fonera 2.0n (FON2303)
Prerequisites
In order to use the Download Manager you must have an external USB HDD connected to the Fonera. The
Fonera will use this external HDD to store the downloaded files. Note: Using Flash memories may slow
down downloads, however they can be used and are fully compatible with this feature. We recommend
using FAT32 or EXT formats.
You will need a Rapidshare or Hotfile premium accounts to download files from Rapidshare or Hotfile.
However you can also use the Download Manager for downloading any other downloadable material
available on the Web for which there is a direct link.
Setup
Usage
The current downloads will be displayed and you can add new files to be downloaded. You can also
pause/resume your downloads.
The Settings menu allows you to select the target device, to define the number of simultaneous
downloads and when the downloads should begin.
Installation
Using Firefox, download the latest version from http://download.fonosfera.org/software/ Just click on
the link (i.e. foneradownloader-0.0.14.xpi)
A button named 'Allow' appears, click on it and install the plugin.

Fonera 2.0n (FON2303)
Troubleshooting
I have a certificate error when using Fonera Downloader add-on connected from WAN
A step by step how-to to solve the issue is available on this blog post.
I am using Firefox 3.0.x with Fonera Downloader and I'm facing minor issue with it
Although Fonera Downloader's main features should work with Firefox 3.0.x you might face little issues with
the parsing functionalities. If so try to upgrade to Firefox 3.5.x.
How to proceed
Make sure you have the developer (DEV TGZ) version of the fon-ng firmware installed, we'll be
using 2.3.6 as found on http://download.fonosfera.org/Gari/
use eg Putty to connect to your device
Now add an expendable drive to an usb hub connected to your fonera...to make things easy...make
sure it's the only drive (powered) to the fonera so we aren't formatting any valuable data from
another drive/pendisk
60
Fonera 2.0n (FON2303)
fdisk
We assume the drive will be connected as "/dev/sda" so we type
fdisk /dev/sda
This might show existing partitions on this drive...we will delete them
If there are more than 1 partitions on the drive it may be necessary to enter a number
Now create a new partition..by default it will be a linux partition.
We will be creating a "swap" partition of 256mbyte first to give the device enough memory to create
large ext3 volumes (this will avoid the "Memory allocation failed while setting up superblock"
error)
n (new partition)
p (primary)
Partition number (1-4): 1
First cilinder : 1
Last Cilinder : +256M
Since this is a Linux (id:82) partition by default we need to change its system id to Linux Swap
(id:83) to be able to use it as a swap partition
n (new partition)
p (primary ...Don't use extended to avoid errors like "inodes_count (0) too big for a filesystem with 0
blocks"

Fonera 2.0n (FON2303)
If it still fails to set an internet connection, it is very likely that the issue is hardware-related. As this Fonera
model is outdated, no replacement or further troubleshooting could be provided.
63
Fonera 2.0n (FON2303)
Open your web browser and introduce http://fonera in the bar address: default password to access
the web interface is admin
Go to "Internet settings"
Switch connection mode from DHCP to Static IP
Introduce an IP different from your router's and the Fonera's
In case your router operates under PPPoE mode, please get in touch with your ISP so he provides you with
the configuration information.
Make sure the Ethernet cable is connected to the right port (Internet) on the Fonera and on the
main router (any spare DMZ LAN port).
If the Ethernet cable is correctly connected try using a different cable at hand and that you know
works.
Make sure the following ports are open on network's Firewall:
Port | Protocol | Description
53 | UDP/TCP | FON DNS
80 | TCP | HTTP
123 | UDP | Fonera Clock synchronization
443 | TCP | HTTPS for portal
1645 | UDP | Radius authentication
1812 | UDP | Radius authentication
1813 | UDP | Radius authentication
1937 | TCP | Fon heartbeat and updates
1938 | TCP | Fon heartbeat and updates
3990 | TCP | Coovachilli port
If it still fails to broadcast the public signal, it is very likely that the issue is hardware-related. As this
Fonera model is outdated, no replacement or further troubleshooting could be provided.
This is nothing to be worried about. Indeed, it is due to the fact that this Fonera model is outdated and any
router-related data is saved in an old deprecated platform. For this reason, the information showing in your
userzone is not updated.
If you check that your Fonera is connected (Internet LED glowing static green light), then you can just
ignore the offline mention.

But, if more than 24 hours have passed since you created your Fon account and you're still unable to see
your hotspot on the Fon map; it could be that the geolocalisation process failed.
At step 4, introduce your address and move the pin which appears on the below map to the right location, if
necessary. Then, just complete the registration process to make sure the change is saved. Please note that
changes may take up to 24 hours to be reflected in your userzone, and the Fon map.
Required ports
Foneras do not require a special port configuration to connect to the internet. You just have to make sure
that the following ports are not blocked:
Port 53
Port 1812
Port 1813
Port 443

Fonera 2.0n (FON2303)
While the Fonera is ON, press the reset button and hold it down for at least 30 seconds then
release it. The Fonera will reboot.
Once rebooted the Fonera web interface will be accessible from the LAN port when
browsing http://fonera
Or from the MyPlace private wireless signal, using the WPA password written on Fonera's sticker
(or the S/N in the case the Fonera 2.0g). Then the dashboard will be available from http://fonera
The configuration wizard will be launched again. The default password is admin it is strongly
advised to change it for a stronger one.
Ignore the warning asking you to register your Fonera if you previously did it.
Note: You can also restore the defaults settings from the web interface.
If you're using other wireless management software, check the user documentation.
Double click the 'Wireless Connection' icon from the System Tray. 'Note:' If the wireless connection
icon is not available in the System Tray, click 'Start > Control Panel > Network Connections', double
click on the 'Wireless Network Connection'.
The following window appears. Click 'Properties'.
Click 'Wireless Networks' tab.
When you switch on your computer, it attempts to connect to the networks listed in the order they
appear. So if Fon (i.e. FON_FREE_INTERNET) is higher in the list than your home network and
both wireless networks are in range then you will be automatically connected to the Fon Spot.
To get around this issue move your home network so it is higher in the list than Fon (do this by
selecting your home router's SSID in the list and clicking on the 'Move up' button until it is above
Fon) or remove the Fon entry if you no longer require it (select the Fon SSID in the list and click on
the 'Remove' button).

The above information will enable to unregister the Fonera from your current account. Afterwards you will
be able to register it again at register.fon.com creating a new user account.
Why is the MAC address online different than the one found
on my router?
If you look at your router information in your user area at fon.com, you will notice that the MAC ID is
different than the one found at the bottom of the Fonera.
This is nothing to be worried about. Both MAC IDs are associated with the same Fonera. The MAC ID in
the user area is associated with the FON_ signal.
The MAC ID found at the bottom of the Fonera refers to the LAN port.

Fonera 2.0n (FON2303)
If this ever happens, you can either click on it to make it go away or simply disregard it. Once a Fonera is
registered you cannot register it again and the fact that the message is shown doesn't mean that it
unregistered overnight, is just that the option to register is always there at least until you click on it.
Please do not confuse this PIN with the one printed underneath your new Fonera's MAC ID (which is 6
digits-long). Actually, you don't need to enter an 8 digit code to connect. You'll notice that the window has a
link to connect using a security key.

Fonera 2.0n (FON2303)
Choose this option and connect using the WPA key which is found at the bottom of the Fonera.
Alternatively, if your device supports WPS, you can connect using this feature instead. To enable WPS on
the Fonera, simply press the "FON WPS" button on its back.

The Fonera 2.0 will not broadcast any Wireless signal anymore. Consequently no members
of the FON community will be able to connect to your Fonera anymore, and you will have to
use an Ethernet cable to access your Fonera.
Since you are not sharing your Internet access with the FON community, your roaming
privileges will be suspended. i.e. You will not be able to connect to FON Spots for free
anymore.
One click on the button activate WPS (only available in the firmware 2.3.5.0).
Pressing the button from 2 to 5 seconds reboots the Fonera.
Pressing this button from 10 to 30 seconds restore the default settings of the Fonera.
Reset Button: While the Fonera is switched OFF, holding this button while the Fonera boots trigger it's
