For best performance, use the 256 colors (8 bit) setting for
your video resolution. Displaying more colors affects
performance.
You can find more information about video cards and video
drivers in the Hardware and System Troubleshooting section

SYSTEM PERFORMANCE
You can use the scenery library to find, add, delete, and
organize scenery files in Flight Simulator. You can also use
the scenery library to add, delete, or modify the CD-ROM
Performance Boosters that automatically load scenery from
the CD-ROM as you fly between scenery areas.
------------------------------------------------------------
Setup installs the scenery you select into the proper
directories and organizes that scenery into appropriate
areas and layers. Before you use the scenery library, make
sure that you read and understand the topics in the "Working
With Scenery" section of Pilot's Help. If you accidentally
delete scenery, reorganize scenery improperly, or modify CD-
ROM Performance Boosters incorrectly, you might have to
reinstall Flight Simulator to restore the proper settings.
------------------------------------------------------------
Before you can use scenery files with Flight Simulator, you
must use the scenery library to locate them.
3. Select the options you want in the dialog box, and then
click Add Files or Add All Files in Path. Do not press RETURN
to close this dialog box.
4. Click Close.
3. Select the options you want in the dialog box, and click
OK.
3. Type the name of the scenery area file you want to add,
select the options you want in the dialog box, and click OK.
You can change the path, title, type, layer, and status of
scenery areas. Before you change the settings for a scenery
area, make sure you understand how scenery areas and layers
work.
2. Click Files.
3. Click the scenery area file you want to change and then
click Edit.
4. Select the options you want in the dialog box, and click
OK.
You can delete scenery areas from your hard drive to save
disk space. It's best to use Setup to remove scenery areas
that you no longer want. Before you delete a scenery area
manually, make sure you understand how scenery areas and
layers work.
2. Click the scenery area file you want to delete, and then
click Delete.
Flight Simulator displays the message "Are you sure you want
to delete the selected scenery file?"

Q. What is DirectDraw?
A. DirectDraw allows direct access of video display memory,
hardware blitters, hardware overlays, and page flipping.
DirectDraw provides this functionality while maintaining
compatibility with existing Windows 95-based programs and
device drivers. Essentially, DirectDraw is a memory manager
for video memory. Using DirectDraw, a program can easily
manipulate video memory, taking full advantage of the
blitting and color decompression capabilities of different
types of video hardware without becoming dependent on a
particular piece of hardware.
Q. What is DirectInput?
A. The Microsoft DirectInput application programming
interface (API) provides fast and consistent access to
analog and digital joysticks. The DirectInput API maintains
consistency with the joystick APIs of the Microsoft Win32
Software Development Kit (SDK), but has improved
responsiveness and reliability by changing the device driver
model. DirectInput device drivers also use the registry to
store settings for standard joysticks, calibration
information for previously configured joysticks, and
settings for OEM-supplied joysticks.
Q. What is DirectPlay?
A. The Microsoft DirectPlay application programming
interface (API) for Windows 95 is a software interface that
simplifies game access to communication services. DirectPlay
provides a way for games to communicate with each other that
is independent of the underlying transport, protocol, or
online service.
Q. What is DirectSound?
A. The Microsoft DirectSound application programming
interface (API) is the audio component of the Microsoft
Windows 95 Game SDK that provides low-latency mixing,
hardware acceleration, and direct access to the sound
device. DirectSound provides this functionality while
maintaining compatibility with existing Windows 95-based
programs and device drivers.

DIRECT 3D TROUBLESHOOTING
The list below includes known issues that currently exist with 3D
accelerated graphics cards and FS98. As you may not be familiar with
several of the terms listed in the "Known FS98 Issues" section below,
here is a brief description of each:
Cirrus Logic CL GD5464 & GD5465: With the current drivers that we have
tested, it is recommended that you do not use hardware acceleration with
these chipsets. You may want to download updated drivers from the video
card manufacturer as they become available. You may also experience some
haze problems or difficulties with textures. The CD GD5464 & GC5465
chipsets are used in the Lagoona 3D & CL Graphics Blaster 3D video cards.
Rendition Verite 1000 and 2000 Cards: These cards do not support Mip
Mapping. Verite chipset-based cards include, Sierra "Screamin' 3D", CL 3D
Blaster, Canopus Total 3D, and Intergraph Reactor.
Matrox Mystique and Mystique 220: These cards do not support Alpha
Blending, Mip Mapping, or Haze. Even though the Mystique 220 has the
option to turn on haze, we suggest that you do not do this as it could
cause display corruption.
NOTE: During DirectX 5.0 installation, replacing the Matrox Mystique
drivers will sometimes not be recommended, however, it our recommendation
that you replace the drivers anyway for the best results.
ATI Rage Cards: The default 16-bit texture setting is required to use FS98
with any Rage chipset. Using 8-bit textures can cause undesirable effects,
such as game hangs and palette corruption. Rage chipset-based cards
include the Rage, Rage II, and Rage II+.
Canopus Total 3D: Using the OEM drivers with this card can cause some
palette corruption on dialogs and aircraft instrument panels. We recommend
you use the DX5 drivers for this card.
Number Nine Reality 772: The current drivers supplied with the Reality 772
will not work correctly with FS98. Until newer drivers are available from
the hardware manufacturer we recommend using the drivers supplied with DX5.
Hercules Stingray 128/3D: It is suggested that you use the current drivers
from the manufacturer's web site for this card.
All 3D cards capable of 32-bit color modes: Our experience has been that
most 32-bit color drivers do not work reliably with Flight Simulator.
We strongly recommend using an 8-bit or 16-bit color mode instead.
When in full screen mode and selecting help, you will be switched back to
Windows. You must manually return to full-screen when you are finished
with help.
If you have installed new hardware AFTER you installed FS98, we recommend
that you re-install DX5 in order for the new hardware to take advantage of
the DX5 drivers. However, you may want to switch between the latest OEM
drivers and the DX5 drivers to determine which give you the best
performance.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Discussion: If you installed with the Typical option, or you used Custom
Install but did not choose to copy Adventure Sounds to the hard drive,
then adventure and lessons sounds are loaded from the Flight Simulator CD
as needed. They are deleted again when the Adventure or Lesson
finishes. If you installed Flight Simulator this way, and you attempt
to run an Adventure or Lesson without the Flight Simulator CD in your
CD-ROM drive, no error message is generated, but none of the sounds will
play, giving the appearance that nothing is happening. Press Ctrl-U to
end the Adventure or Lesson, insert the Flight Simulator 98 CD, and then
restart the Adventure or Lesson.
Discussion: The Num Lock key now behaves normally. That is, it toggles
the Num Lock state on and off. In order for the numeric keypad keys to
control the aircraft, you should ensure that Num Lock is turned off.
To bring up a map view, press "Shift-]". To close the map view, the "]"
key will now close whichever view window has focus.
Issue: I see a COM2 radio in the Cessna's radio stack. Why can't I
use it?
