A fantastic line-up for you for the month of July at the Mall Arts

Internationally renowned as a spiritual singer, Noirín’s repertoire
ranges from the Irish Sean Nós to the songs of the German mystic
Hildegard von Bingen. Noirín often focuses on the powerful songs
of women accompanying some of her songs with the Indian har-

band from the UK. Founded by songwriters Rob King (acoustic
guitar, mandola, bodhrán) and Pippa Marland (vocals, saxes, Irish
whistles), Carmina’s music is original, soulful and sophisticated,
drawing in Celtic traditional and contemporary strains blended
with jazz improvisation. Although their sound has been compared
with Moving Hearts, Joni Mitchell and Van Morrison, Carmina’s
music is uniquely their own, yet highly accessible. Reviewers in
the press worldwide have described their music as: ‘Powerful,
original and enigmatic … spellbinding …spiritual...fresh, sophis-
ticated and accessible …inspirational, vibrant …magical’.
Carmina first made their name touring Ireland and have since
played major venues and festivals throughout the world.
Appearances have included Glastonbury, Trowbridge, Belfast

UNDER 3’S SWIM FOR

The importance of learning to swim at an early age has always
been top of the agenda at Aura Youghal Leisure Centre. This
essential life skill represents an important learning curve for all
children and Aura is helping parents progress this early learning
with a special swim offer which allows all children under the age
of three to swim for free during any of the open swim times at
Aura Youghal.
“We always stress to parents the importance of developing water
confidence and swimming skills in children from an early age.
Our under threes swim for free offer is designed to make it as easy
as possible for parents to help their children take their first swim
steps,” explained Tracy Kenneally, Operations Manager at Aura

January 12th he was contacted by the Department of Foreign
Affairs, and asked if he would be seconded to work with the
United Nations Humanitarian effort, to help the stricken people of
Haiti. Michael's role is to work with United Nations World Food
Programme, with whom he has done several courses, over the last
few years, in the Curragh Army Camp, in Sweden and the Middle
East. On this occasion, Michael had a choice to work with either
the UN or with Goal, who were seeking Emergency Logisticians
urgently in Port au Prince. He chose to be seconded, on this occa-
sion to Goal.
His initial role was in Logistics and Food Distribution. This role
necessitated the building of Rub Hall stores tents, for the storage
of hundreds of tons of food aid and non food items such as tents,
blankets and basic sanitation items. Meetings had to be organised
on the ground with various UN agencies and local partners to plan
the distribution and organise security on the ground. Many
Apart from the risk of kidnappings, rioting and shootings, the
biggest fear was from the many aftershocks, which occurred fre-
quently. It was normal procedure going to bed each night, wearing
a whistle and photo id (in case of an aftershock which could cause
the house to collapse).
The following is an extract taken from his daily diary.

the lads injured, while try-

under the rubble that is everywhere to be seen in Port au Prince.
As Haiti was in the early stages of an emergency, work began at
06.30 every morning and would continue up until 10.00 each
night. This was a 7 day week. Needless to say, most if not all
humanitarian workers working in such conditions would succumb
to sickness themselves on a regular basis. Michael himself did not
escape this predicament.

CLAYCASTLE PITCH & PUTT

Sunday 27th June saw our players in all three grades attempt
to qualify for the Gents National Strokeplay 2010. In the
Juniors our sole representative was Brendan McCaughey
who was playing in the event for the first time. Brendan
played solid pitch and putt to return a score of 112 which
was good enough for 5th place and qualification for Ryston.
In the intermediate section Don Sheehan, Ted Kelly and
Johan Brosnan played the tricky Riverside course in
Bishopstown. Despite the efforts of Ted and Don they were
unable to post the necessary 106 to qualify. Johan’s return of
105 saw him safely through. The senior section was played
on our own Claycastle course in extremely testing condi-

The arrival of the Premiership, aligned with modern communica-

senior game in Ireland, which struggles before attendances meas-

Despite the switch to a summer season and increased RTE cover-

greater concentration on the junior clubs," he states. "Youth foot-

Success for Youghal Bay Boat Club OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF THE

Inaugural Sea Angling Competiton Photo
Bobby Whyte
ST. DECLAN'S WAY SPONSORED WALK
Youghal Bay Boat Club's inaugural Deep Sea Angling
Competition proved to be a huge success in attracting in excess of
30 anglers for a weekend of serious fishing in Youghal Bay.
The private boats competition consisted of two categories, boats up to
21ft and boats over 21ft. The competition was fished using up to
three hooks, with the anglers priding themselves on their selection of
baits and lures according to tide, water colour, and ground.
Boats from Youghal, Crosshaven, Cork and as far away as Kilkenny
took to the water on Saturday 26th June at 10.00 am for a grueling six
hours of fishing. With conditions on Sunday proving to be more chal-
lenging, it did not deter the anglers on board who all braved the ele-
ments.

The Sponsored Walk is being organised by St Declan's GAA club with

they were looking forward to their league campaign after the win.

MOTORING WITH GER GEARY

MX-5 WINS AGAIN
The world's best-selling roadster, the Mazda MX-5, added anoth-
er accolade to its many awards by earning the title of Best Sports
Car on the 2010 JD Power vehicle ownership satisfaction survey
for the UK.
More than 17,000 car owners across the UK took part in the annu-
al survey.
Owners of Mazda's iconic two-seater sports car gave their cars top
scores for appearance, exterior and interior quality and mechanical
reliability, performance, running costs and also for dealer service.
After the votes were in, the Mazda MX-5 achieved a satisfaction
rating of 82.3% - beating out luxury sports cars like the Mercedes-
Benz SLK and the Audi TT, as well as the VW Eos - to claim Best-
in-Class honours.
The MX-5 is no stranger to finishing at the top of JD Power sur-
veys, and has been voted best in the sports car category often and
in many countries around the globe.
Owners have consistently praised the roadster for being an afford-
able, durable and extremely fun-to-drive sports car for 20 years.
The MX-5 has won over 160 automotive awards, while finding
870,000 owners worldwide, and has become one of the industry's
truly cult vehicles with fans on every continent.

SCRAP KING
18% of new cars purchased in May under the Government's
Scrappage scheme were Renaults. Renault topped the poll in May
with over 1358 reclaims made by new Renault owners.
D. Walsh
In all there were 7368 reclaims made, according to statistics com-
piled by Revenue. Renault Ireland leads the scrappage table fol-
lowed by Ford at 15% and Skoda at 10%.
Auto Repairs
Renault introduced its own scrappage scheme in September 2009
months before the Government's own scheme was announced and Unit 1G, Youghal Business Park,
offered double scrappage on all cars of 8 years and over and also Park Mountain, Youghal
offered attractive trade in allowances on all brands and models.
The company extended its own scrappage scheme, which is still
available to new car buyers with cars of 8 years and older. Specialising in all your motoring needs
Eric Basset, managing director, Renault Ireland "The Renault
scrappage scheme coupled with the government scrappage has
certainly shown a big improvement in our orders for 2010. We are
very happy to be number one for scrappage in May and are
