Judo

Estie Gay D. Liwanen

An exemplar Filipina athlete, former Criminology professor and a proud Cordilleran, Coach Estie has a
lot of achievements under her belt. She was a member of the National Judo Team and was a
Southeast Asian Games Medalist. Currently, she is a member of the National Judo Team and has
garnered various medals, both local and international. She is also a recipient of the Kafagway Sports
Award and the Best Ippon Sports Award. A role model for Filipinas, Coach Estie continues to excel not
only as an athlete and leader in sports but also in her career.

Luta Livre

Afonso (Cego) Junior

Mestre Afonso, a well-traveled and accomplished athlete and coach was born in Iguaçu, Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil. He has a college and postgraduate degree in Physical Education, specializing in Sports
Training at the University of Unisuam. Mestre’s martial arts journey began when he started training in
Muay Thai at the Budokan gym in 2000, under the masters Alex Gaze and Flavio Moura. In 2001, he
was convinced by his friends to start training Brazilian Luta Livre under masters Joao Ricardo and Johil
de Oliviera.

A champion Lutador, Mestre Afonso has garnered prestigious championships and wins in his career.
Aside from being a highly regarded Brazilian Luta Livre Black Belt, 2 nd degree, he was also a Pan Asia
Champion in 2016, a Copa Budokan (LL) Champion, a Muay Thai kru (black), and a professional MMA
fighter.

Boxing

Florence Ferrer

Coach Florence, a dedicated family man and coach to his athletes, started boxing when he was 10
years old. His father was a farmer while his mother was a housewife. Life in his province of Bago,
Bacolod was difficult; people had limited options in life and most end up as farmers. Boxing gave
Coach Florence a way to rise from poverty as he showed talent and dedication at a very young,
excelling in the amateur scene in his hometown.

A hardworking and talented athlete, he became a member of the prestigious Philippine National
Team and was able to represent the country in several world championship tournaments in various
countries such as Hungary, Greece, Finland, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Vietnam, and Pakistan.
As part of the Philippine National Team’s training, he was able to get a once in a lifetime opportunity
to train in Cuba under the best boxing coaches. His years of dedication and hard work paid off as he
became a silver medalist in boxing at the Southeast Asian Games. After he retired as a National
athlete, he became the coach of Gretchen Abaniel, the first Filipina World Boxing Champion (WIBA
and WBC).
