Job Scope in Ireland and Uk
Job Scope in Ireland and Uk
Job Scope in Ireland and Uk
In current date may anaesthesia jobs are available in UK/Ireland. Those who are
interested to come to UK/Ireland can grab the opportunity. Yes of course you have
to pass IELTS and PLAB or equivalent qualifications like MCAI/FCAI/EDAIC/EDIC/FRCA
to get GMC/IMC registration. But it is now easy to get job now in UK/Ireland and also
to get training position. But before that you have to get medical council registration
from GMC or IMC.
Ireland:
To come to work in Ireland you need to get Ireland Medical Council registration first. For
more details visit this webpage (http://www.medicalcouncil.ie/Registration-
Applications/ ). Easiest way to get IMC registration is to pass PRES (Irish equivalent of
PLAB). It has 3 parts. Part I is document verification and IELTS. 2nd part is MCQ which
consists of general subjects and here psychiatry is given high importance and will
contain about 40 question. 3rd part is OSCE consisting of case situation, investigations
etc. Once you pass you can apply for IMC registration by paying the fee and can apply
for jobs. For jobs you can directly apply to the hospitals here or to main healthcare
provider (www.hse.ie , www.publicjobs.ie ). You can also contact several locum agencies
like Locum Medics and other available here.
MTI:
There is another route to come to Ireland is called Medical Training Initiative (MTI) for
developing world. But here your registration will be restricted and you can only work in
specific hospital and after coming if you clear MCAI or PRES or EDIC, EDAIC you can get
full registration. But again for this you need to pass IELTS.

I am not fully sure whether this is still in vogue. But worth trying. You can get more
information by writing to College of Anaesthetists of Ireland (www.anaesthesia.ie).
For living and working standard in Ireland please visit this site:
Also cities other than Delhi and Mumbai can apply VISA through agency:

United Kingdom:
I cannot give first hand information as I do not work there. but can give information
only.
Again the route is mostly similar to above.
Best way to get General Medical Council (GMC), UK registration is to pass PLAB. For
more information contact http://www.gmc-uk.org/doctors/index.asp
Next alternative is to get PLAB exemption. This you can get by either passing FRCA, EDIC,
EDAIC. Here difference is that you have to pass full FRCA than part I of Irish equivalent
and FRCA is much tougher than FCAI and it can only be given in London, not like MCAI
available in other places. Again all information about FRCA can be obtained on Royal
College of Anaesthestists UK: http://www.rcoa.ac.uk/examinations
Again as far as I know people from Pakistan with FCPC can get exemption, but for more
information contact RCOA or GMC.
Again MTI is also available in UK and it is still very much in vogue. Again you have to pass
IELTS to avail this option.

doctors/medical-training-initiative-mti-scheme/information-for-mti-applicants/
https://www.rcplondon.ac.uk/education-practice/advice/medical-training-initiative
Again registration will be for limited period within which you have to clear either PLAB
or FRCA and you will have to work in specific hospital and cannot move.
Once you get GMC registration you can apply for jobs directly in hospitals and in NHS
site as well as BMJ Careers where you can register and can search as well as apply. Again
there are several locum agencies to help you.
Those who are having problem in passing IELTS, should take some classes and read
material before approaching for it. I personally feel ADP, Australia is better than BCL to
get better score. Again I have some online material, though old for IELTS which I can
provide.
Moreover for more information of registration, jobs, working status you can contact
Liam McGrath, Jason Taylor, Philip Braham, James Brandon and many others who
are present in this group to help you in registration, living quality queries, medical
registration and immigration. Just contact these people in need of any such queries. I
hope now people will stop me disturbing in personal msg about working and job
options in Europe. For books related to IELTS and Anaesthesia fellowships (FCAI,
FRCA) you can request me by sending msg. Do not post requests in this group and
keep this group only for academic discussion and debates.

MCAI (First part of Irish Fellowship in Anaesthesia): MCAI has again 3 parts. First
part is documentation of proof of experience in anaesthesia, 2nd part MCQ which
consists of 30 each from anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, physics and
measurement and 10 from clinical anaesthesia. 3rd part is OSCE which will again
consists of 12-16 stations of clinical scenario, instruments, investigations, charts
relevant to anaesthesia and intensive care, X-ray, ABG, PFT, pre anaesthesia
evaluation, revealing bad news or counselling patient, CPR station (this is mandatory
to pass). You can give MCAI in Dublin and it is now open to all people with
anaesthesia experience for 2 years. Or you can give it in Egypt, Jordan, Muscat,
Malaysia, Brunei. For more information visit this site:

https://www.anaesthesia.ie/index.php/international/malaysia
https://www.anaesthesia.ie/index.php/examinations/international-examinations
Final part of Irish Fellowship of anaesthesia (FCAI): FCAI final part has two section
done on two separate dates.
1. First part (Theory): It is theory part. First 3 hours session is MCQ part which has
again 60 MCQs with true false choice followed by 40 MCQs with single best answer.
There will be a gap in between two. After a gap of 30-45 min there will be 2nd part
of theory which will consist of short question answer each having 10 marks and 10
such question. You have to answer them all, no alternatives. Do not leave any
questions blank even if you don’t know much. Try writing few lines about it. Once
you pass this you can apply for the next part which will be conducted after 2 months.
2. Final part (Viva): It has two tables. One table will be based on a long case. The
cases will be imaginary. Mostly surgical cases with loads of medical problems. You
will be given outline about the case to read. Once you finish you can ask the
examiners about other details, clinical examination finding and investigations. They
will be asking in between. There will be two examiners in a table. One will be asking
you questions, other will be giving you marks and will be monitoring our response as
well as the examiner’s attitude. Examiner will also be marked. Whole procedure will
be recorded on camera for future reevaluation if you file a reassessment or
complain. There will be set question for the examiners. They will ask them first to
pass you. Once you perform well then can ask extra. But there will be time limit for
the question and each table. Once history part gone they will be asking about
anaesthesia plan and management. Never jump to choice, but proceed as total care
stepwise. Once that is done and there is more time they may ask further related or
unrelated questions. 2nd table: This will consist of two short cases based on
intensive care and pain management. Again some details will be given about the
scenario and you will be asked a set questions. Once they are satisfied, they will
move from one question to another. And after some time the role of examiner will
change to next short case. Again the process will be same as above about evaluation
and recording. Best part here is that the examiners are trained and they are well
instructed what to ask, how much to ask for passing and for giving higher grade.
They will hardly go off the limit. If you cannot answer as question or not at all, then
they will not keep lingering on that topic and will move on to next question. Here
they need to know what minimum you need to know to be a safe anaesthesiologist.
Any answer of unsafe, bold, daring anaesthesia discussion, technique and comment
will dig your own grave and they will make sure you never ever pass the exam and
also will be reported to medical council about it. Thus if you don’t know, better do
not guess and never make wild weird guess. Admit politely you don’t know. Never
ever try to argue especially when you are wrong. The passing will depend on overall
grades and average limit. I don’t know much about FRCA or EDAIC, EDIC. But FRCA
and EDAIC are more or less similar. FRCA is much tougher than FCAI and EDAIC is bit
more easier to pass than both FRCA and FCAI. But after EDAIC you need to pass final
part of both FRCA and FCAI to get full licence for non EU candidates.
