Introduction
Market Research Industry
The market research industry has grown to over $10 billion worldwide, currently
experiencing an average 5% annual growth rate. Market research analysis can be
dissected in myriad ways such as research categories that include customer
satisfaction, advertising effectiveness, product development, price elasticity, or
developing a market forecast; by population, with consumer research versus
business to business market research; or by industry.
Market research Industry is one of the emerging sectors in India. The estimated size
of the MR industry in India is around USD 110 million (approximate INR 500
Crores). This includes research done internally by some clients’ having own in-
house facilities. The split by Customized and Syndicated research would be broadly
in the ratio 60:40 respectively.
Market Research in India is about 3 decades old, with just 2-3 key players in the first
decade. The second decade saw the emergence of more MR companies owing to
growth opportunities. Today there are about 15-16 main players in the Indian market
research industry. The key players in today’s MR industry are: ACN –ORG-Marg,
IMRB, TNS, Synovate, Indica, Quantum Market Research, Research-International.
MR in India has grown over the years and moved towards becoming an industry
from a craftsmen’s guild. Research products have become center stage – Rate of
Growth annually was about 12-15 % before there was a recession period in the early
2000. However, after this stagnancy in the early 2000 period, currently it is growing
at the rate of about 18-20 % per annum.
Marketing and research companies can be divided into three categories:
Market research associations that promote the industry
Market research suppliers of syndicated or secondary research
Market research firms providing custom or primary research

Porter’s Five Forces Model
In case of MDRA, the competition is intense from Global as well as from domestic
competitors as all the factors mentioned above hold true except the one of market
growth. A little scope is that the market growth is at a good rate which reduces the
intensity to a certain extent.
2. Threat of new entrants – Entry of new competitor in the market weakens the
power of the existing firm. The threat of new entry is high in the following cases
The capital required to start the business is low
The key technology is not difficult to acquire
The product is not differentiated
The switching cost is low
The market is expected to rise rapidly
In case of MDRA, the threat to new entry is neither very high or very low. Big
houses business houses are entering into the market. Since there is no barrier to entry,
MDRA does face a niche part of threat. The threat arises on the basis of profit
margins which further depend on the accuracy of solution provided or the
effectiveness of field team.
9|Page
3. Threat of substitute products/service – The threat is high in the following cases
When substitute products or service are available
Customers can easily find the product or service at same or lower price
The quality of substitute is almost similar to the quality of existing product
In case of MDRA, since the company has a competitive pricing of its services
with less substitutes, it has a higher edge over the buyers. It has loyal clients and
price sensitive customers who are willing to get the services.
10 | P a g e
5. Bargaining power of suppliers – It means how strong the position of a company
is in negotiating with the supplier of raw materials. The power of supplier is high
when
When the number of buyers if few or they are concentrated and well organized
If the company is not an important customer
There are few or no substitutes available of the supplied raw material
If the switching cost of one supplier to another is high
In case of MDRA, the company has a slight edge over its suppliers. Since the
respondents are majorly the common people, they have effective team assigned. The
rates negotiation lies more with organization for databases and primary research
data.

Education Institutions in India
Colleges/Institutions affiliated/recognized with University These are institutions
which can run degree programmes but are not empowered to provide degree on their
own and are necessarily have to be attached with a University/University level
institution for the purpose of awarding degree. For the purpose of the survey these
institutions have been classified as under:
Colleges Affiliated with University/ University level Institutions – Under Section
12A(1)(b), College means any Institution, whether known as such or by any other
name which provides for a course of study for obtaining any qualification from a
university and which, in accordance with the rules and regulations of such university,
is recognized as competent to provide for such course of study and present students
undergoing such course of study for the examination for the award of such
qualification. These are the institutions established or maintained by or admitted to
the privileges of the University.
Some colleges are given Autonomous Status. Autonomous colleges that have
completed three-year terms can confer the degree under their title with the seal of
the university. Affiliated and constituent institutions of Central and State Public

universities, off campus centres and Recognized centres are not counted as Colleges.
There are 278 affiliating Universities and they have 40026 colleges. There are 16

16 | P a g e
2. Determination of weightages:
Experts were consulted to frame the parameters and sub parameters pertinent to
respective streams and their weightages. Since the ratio for professional courses was
60:40 so 1200 marks were given for objective scoring & 800 for perceptual scoring.
3. Inviting Participation:
Comprehensive objective questionnaires were designed for each of 14 streams.
Colleges fulfilling the eligibility criteria were contacted to participate in the survey
through multiple way: formal invitations were sent along with the objective
questionnaire; An objective questionnaire was put on the websites of MDRA and
India Today to increase awareness; multiple emails, telephonic calls were made to
remind colleges about timely participation; and follow-ups were done to clarify any
doubts regarding the data in the questionnaire. As many as 1120 colleges provided
their institutional data along with voluminous supporting documents.
17 | P a g e
4. Backchecking of objective data:
After getting the objective data from colleges, cross checking of the information
provided by them was done through available information and validation (Scrutiny
of supporting documents, past data, mandatory disclosure, telephonic check,
confirmation through emails, secondary research etc.). In case of insufficient/
incorrect data the concerned colleges were asked to provide complete, correct and
updated data.
5. Auditing:
Physical auditing (Verification) were conducted to verify the objective data provided
by colleges. The experienced researchers of MDRA visited 178 colleges and
thoroughly examined each aspect of details provided by them.
18 | P a g e
Perceptual Ranking:
A perceptual survey was carried out among 2051 well informed respondents (605
senior faculty members, 350 recruiters, 398 career accelerators and 652 final year
students) across 24 cities. Respondents were from all over India. National and zonal
rankings were taken from them in their respective fields of experience and were
given 75 percent and 25 percent weightages respectively. The institutes are also
ranked on a 10- point rating scale on each of the five key parameters.

to consulting and even implementing the given solution.
There are 864 universities, 40026 colleges and 11669 standalone institutions
listed on AISHE web portal and out of 795 Universities, 34193 Colleges and
7496 Standalone institutions have responded during the survey. 278
universities are affiliating colleges.
15 Universities are exclusively for women, 4 in Rajasthan, 2 in Tamil Nadu

Maharashtra, Odisha, Uttarakhand and West Bengal.
The top 8 States in terms of highest number of colleges in India are Uttar
Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana,
Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh.
Bangalore district tops in terms of the number of colleges with 1025 colleges
followed by Jaipur with 635 colleges. Top 50 districts have about 33.5%
colleges.
At All-India level, there are merely 68 female teachers per 100 male teachers.
Foreign student intake in the country has increased from the last year.
To increase sense of healthy competition among the colleges, Government
has introduced NIRF ranking.
Only 2.6%run Ph.D. programmes and 36.7% colleges run post graduate level
programs.
The highest number of students have graduated from Arts stream.
35 | P a g e
Recommendations:
The objective questionnaire send in word form can be made in the form of e-
questionnaire and the questions can be made in a certain platform in cloud.
This will reduce manual work of backchecking of files as errors and
incomplete questions will be easily detectable.
This will also reduce the process of data entry.
When a data is arrived if found errors, all the queries must be mailed first and
then a phone call to assist.
Single point of contact must only be there to follow-up since the concerned
person gets frustrated by different person calling.
Limitations:
The unwillingness of colleges and coaching to participate.
Invalid/ Incorrect contact numbers from various sources.
Unwilling to share some data which are confidential.
