1) Describe The Development Of Rail Transportation In Malaysia.

The rail transportation in Malaysia started as a commodity transporter and

later developed into an intercity train service. Malaysian transportation system

has evolved traditional transportation modes to a better and modern image

system. In Malaysia, rail transportation system is now categorized into urban,

sub-urban and intercity.

Urban rail transportation system is initially designed to reduce congestion

in cities by enhancing mobility among city-lites. The rail system will be

constructed to increase connectivity between different place of interest in city

centers for commuters and visitors.

On 1 June 1885, the first railways line was open and about 13 km long. It

ran between Port Weld and Taiping, the heart of the tin-rich Larut Valley in

Perak state. A year later, The second line was opened to link Kuala Lumpur,

again the center of tin-mining activities in the Klang Valley, and Klang and

subsequently to Port Swettenham (The Port Klang today).

In Malaysia,Rail transport comprises of heavy rail, Keretapi Tanah Melayu

Berhad (KTM), mass rapid transit (MRT), light rapid transit (LRT), monorail,

airport rail link and a funicular railway line. Heavy rail is mostly used for intercity

passenger and freight transport as well as some urban public transport, while

rapid transit is used for intra-city urban public transport. There are two airport rail

link services linking Kuala Lumpur with the Kuala Lumpur International Airport

KLIA and Subang Airport KLIA2.

1.1 Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTM)

The main rail operator in Peninsular Malsysia is KTM or known as the

Malayan Railways Limited. It was in the British colonial era when it was

first built to transport tin. Keretapi Tanah Melayu was Previously known as

the Federated Malay States Railways (FMSR) and the Malayan Railway

Administration (MRA). In 1992, The organisation was corporatized, but

remains wholly owned by the Malaysian government.

KTM operates intercity passenger trains on both main lines and Bukit

Mertajam-Butterworth branch. The Unit/Subsidiaries including KTM

Intercity, KTM ETS, KTM Komuter, KTM Cargo, KTM Distribution (KTMD)

and Skypark Link.

1.2 Light Rapid Transit (LRT)

LRT or Light Rapid Transit was fully owned by Finance Ministry

Incorporated or Acronym for Rangkaian Pengangkutan Intergrasi Deras

Kuala Lumpur. It is a service brand under Prasarana Malaysia subsidiaries

companies to refer to the public transportation services dedicated for

Kuala Lumpur and Klang Valley area . It Operate public transports in KL

and other parts of the country and comprises of 3 lines, the Kelana Jaya

Line, the Ampang/Sri Petaling Line, and the Monorail line.

1.3 Express Rail Link Sdn. Bhd

Express Rail Link Sdn. Bhd is a joint venture company between YTL

Corporation Bhd, Lembaga Tabung Haji and Trisilco Equity Sdn. Bhd. It is

a standard gauge and electrified airport rail link in Malaysia that connects

the Kuala Lumpur International Airport(KLIA) with the Kuala Lumpur

Sentral (KL Sentral). The line is utilized by two different train services

which is KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit.

1.4 Sabah State Railway

The only state department in Malaysia to operate a railway service and the

only rail transport system operating on the island of Borneo was formerly

known as North Borneo Railway. This Railway consists of a single 134km

line from Tanjung Aru, near Kota Kinabalu, to the town of Tenom.

1.5 Mass Rapid Transit (MRT)

Mas Phase 1 (Sungai Buloh - Semantan) of Sungai Buloh-Kajang MRT

Line have started its operation by 15 December 2016.In December 2010,

the government approved the implementation of the MRT project and

announced preliminary plans for the first line, stretching 60 km from

Sungai Buloh to Kajang through 35 stations.

The line will pass through the city centre and will serve densely

populated suburban areas including Kota Damansara, Mutiara

Damansara, Bandar Utama, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Bukit Damansara,

Cheras, Bandar Tun Hussein Onn and Balakong, with a total population of

1.2 million people.

1.6 Monorail

In Malaysia, the monorail system is used for public transport in Kuala

Lumpur. It is 8.6 km (5.3 mi) long, running from Titiwangsa in the north of

central Kuala Lumpur, to KL Sentral just to the south of the city centre and

It has total of 11 stations. The system uses two-car trains which were

manufactured in Malaysia and It is operated by Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd.

1.7 Klang Valley Railway Transit

The Klang Valley’s rail-based transit system consists of these Light Rail

Transit (LRT) systems – the Ampang Line LRT Ampang Line LRT, the Sri

Petaling Line LRT Sri Petaling Line LRT and the Kelana Jaya Line LRT

Kelana Jaya Line LRT – operated by Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd, two commuter

rail lines (along with shuttle services) operated as the KTM Komuter KTM

Komuter, one monorail line known as the KL Monorail KL Monorail, and an

airport rail link to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and klia2,

which consists of the KLIA Ekspres KLIA Ekspres and the KLIA Transit

KLIA Transit ERL services.

2) Explain How The Development Of Rail Transportation In Malaysia

Has Impacted The Mobility Of Locals And Tourists In The Country.

In Malaysia, Railway is a major by-product of the industrial revolution. Railway

was developed as private owned public utility. Thus serving the dual purpose

of providing service to the society in the form of an affordable transport mode

both for personal mobility and for transport of their goods and at the same

time earning a profit to the owner.

The development of rail transportation had change from time to time,

bringing different impacts to the mobility of locals and tourists. let’s see how

the Rail Transportation impacted locals and tourist.

2.1 More Convenient to Travel Through Rail Transportation

The railways had provided a convenient mode for consumers in their daily life

to travel. Using Rail Transport, consumers can escape from the usual traffic

jam on the buzzling road. Rail Transport in Malaysia provides many stops on

selected destination, for instance, Klang Valley Railway Transit provides

many different rail routes and operator like KTM, LRT, MRT and KLIA

Express. It’s super easy for locals or tourist to travel to anywhere or to airport

using train.

In Addition, The Minister of Transport had also launched the “Go

Cashless” Campaign which was organized by Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd

(ERL) at KL Sentral and Rapid KL. In this case, consumers can go cashless

by using my rapid Card or KLIA transit card, just top up and are ready to go!

Consumers just have to bring this card to ride a train and have no problems of

worrying not enough money to pay the tickets.

2.1 Minimize the time to travel from place to place

Railway transport are actually way faster than cars or motorcycles. Thus, it

saves times to travel from place to place. In Addition, there are no disruptions

or delays which stem from clearance limitations, and it is affected to a

minimum extent by bad weather conditions. Furthermore, Rail usually uses

short time to reach from one point to another point. For example, when using

KTM or LRT, it actually take about 5-10 minutes to reach a destination in

center of city. While using cars or motorbikes, it may need up to 30minutes

caused by the traffic jams.

For locals who are working or heading to class, train bring the fastest way

to them to reach their destination, thus save up their time.

2.2 Feeling safe when travel using Train

Railway is the safest form of transport. The chances of accidents and

breakdowns of railways are lesser compared to other modes of transport.

Moreover, the traffic could be protected from the exposure to sun, rains, snow

etc. In terms of accidents and breakdowns railways are the safest form of

transport, through many years the number of cases for rail transport is lesser

than cars or motorcycles.

When both railroads and trains are adequately maintained or replaced

when needed, it would be rarely ever witness any accidents with this means

of transportation. Unlike road transportation, train have the only way and one

travel means following one route to its final destination.

After development of rail transport, consumers start to use train as their

main transportation in their daily life. Statistic from MOH shows that train have

lesser accident cases compared to cars and motorcycles in Malaysia in the

gives past few years. Thus, it gives a security for consumers to travel by train

to their destination. Other than than, all the trains have setup the CCTV to

remote the safety inside the train, while making sure there is no any criminal

cases and keeping consumers safe and comfortable.

2.3 Lower expenditures to travel

Compared to other transport alternatives, travel by rail offers the best value

for money. By train, it is suitable for those who seeks for budget trips or

having a backpack trip. It totally saves cost and from one point to another

point does costs less than RM5.

Locals who can’t afford to buy a car or a motorbike, it definitely brings lots

of benefit for them to travel using train. Moreover, Tourists get to blend into

Malaysia’s culture when travel by train, they get to see the scenery and

culture in Malaysia.
