Nucleic Acid
-is a polymer in which the monomer units are nucleotides.

Nucleotide
-building blocks of nucleic acid
-is a three-subunit molecule in which a pentose sugar is bonded to both a
phosphate group and a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic base.

SICKLE CELL DISEASE

Sickle cell disease is a group of disorders that affects hemoglobin, the molecule
in red blood cells that delivers oxygen to cells throughout the body. People with this
disorder have atypical hemoglobin molecules called hemoglobin S, which can distort red
blood cells into a sickle, or crescent, shape.
 Cause
The signs and symptoms of sickle cell disease are caused by the sickling of red
blood cells. When red blood cells sickle, they break down prematurely, which can
lead to anemia. Anemia can cause shortness of breath, fatigue, and delayed growth
and development in children. The rapid breakdown of red blood cells may also
cause yellowing of the eyes and skin, which are signs of jaundice.

 Shape
The shape of a red blood cell is a biconcave disk with a flattened center - in other
words, both faces of the disc have shallow bowl-like indentations (a red blood cell
looks like a donut). While in sickle cell anemia, the red blood cells become rigid and
sticky and are shaped like sickles or crescent moons Production of red blood cells is
controlled by erythropoietin, a hormone produced primarily by the kidneys.
 Ability to carry oxygen
Sickle cell anemia inhibits the ability of haemoglobin in red blood cells to
carry oygen.

Insertion of wrong nucleotide into a DNA code group could result in?
Mutation occurs when a “wrong” nucleotide is inserted during DNA replication.
When this happened in a protein coding-gene, it could have no effect on the cell that
bears it, it could change the cell’s function, or rarely cause the cell to die, which is no
big deal to you because you have 37 trillion of them.
