Team composition and equipments

Team composed of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, paramedics, Emergency
Medical Technicians, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, respiratory therapists, and a variety of other
allied health and logistical personnel. Team typically have 120–150 members, from which the team
leader chooses up to 50 members to deploy on missions requiring a full team. Smaller strike teams or
other modular units can also be activated and deployed when less than full-scale deployments are
needed.

Team formerly traveled equipped with medical equipment and supplies, large tents, generators, and
other support equipment necessary to establish a base of operations: designed to be self-sufficient for
up to 72 hours, in a disaster area and treating it up to 250 patients per day.

Involvements of non government department in disaster management


Emerging trends in managing natural disaster have highlighted the role of Non-Governmental
Organizations (NGOs) as one of the most effective alternative means of achieving an efficient
communication link between the disaster management agencies and the affective community. The
specific role of NGOs in respect to disaster management is:

 Pre-disaster
 Training and capacity building of NGO staffs and task forces;
 Set up of information channel to the village and district;
 Advocacy and planning;
 Regular contact with block control room. During disaster
 Activate of channel of warning dissemination to reach the target groups;
 Help block administration for wide dissemination of warning;
 Rescue and first-aid, including psychological aid, supply of food, water, medicines, and
other immediate need materials;
 Ensuring sanitation and hygiene;
 Damage assessment. Post- disaster material aid in reconstruction;
 in seeking financial aid;

The role of NGOs is a potential key element in disaster management. The NGOs operating at grassroots
level can provide a suitable alternative as they have an edge over governmental agencies for
invoking community involvement. This is chiefly because; the NGO sector has strong linkages with
the community base, and can exhibit great flexibility in procedural matters vis-à-vis the
government. The NGO provided assistance for the providing relief materials, involvement in rescue
operations, arranging temporary shelters, organize health camp. Besides these NGO also arrange on
the assistance for providing training and education to the children respectively. But they did not
provided any financial assistance.
Involvement of government department in disaster management
National Disaster Management Authority, abbreviated as NDMA, is an apex Body of Government of
India, with a mandate to lay down policies ,plans and guidelines for Disaster Management to ensure
timely and effective response to disasters. Towards this, it has the following responsibilities:

 Lay down policies on disaster management;


 Approves the National Plan;
 Approve plans prepared by the Ministries or Departments of the Government of India in
accordance with the National Plan;
 Lay down guidelines to be followed by the State Authorities in drawing up the State Plan;
 Lay down guidelines to be followed by the different Ministries or Departments of the
Government of India for the Purpose of integrating the measures for prevention of disaster or
the mitigation of its effects in their development plans and projects;
 Coordinate the enforcement and implementation of the policy and plans for disaster
management;
 Recommend provision of funds for the purpose of mitigation;
 Provide such support to other countries affected by major disasters as may be determined by
the Central Government;
 Take such other measures for the prevention of disaster, or the mitigation, or preparedness and
capacity building for dealing with threatening disaster situations or disasters as it may consider
necessary;
 Lay down broad policies and guidelines for the functioning of the National Institute of Disaster
Management.
