Phase Comparison Element

The ph comp element is designed to discriminate between internal faults and

throughfaults under CT saturation conditions
Internal faults : Infeeds nearly in-phase, thus all currents must be within a 90
deg sector.
External faults : For a fault occurring outside the protected zone, there is at
least one incoming current and one outgoing current. Thus at least one current
must be outside the 90 deg sector.

P746 : Isolator State Monitoring(1)

P746 requires reliable isolator position information to decide which breaker to

be tripped in case of fault.
 The relay can incorporate isolator state monitoring, giving an indication of
the position of the isolator, or, if the state is unknown, an alarm can be raised
using the following PSL:
Use of one position information using normally closed contact 89b.

89a

89b
The use of the open position (89b) is highly
recommended
See tutorial regarding confidentiality
Presentation title - 01/01/2010 - P 37 disclosures. Delete if not needed.
P746 : Isolator State Monitoring(2)

Use of one position information using normally closed contact 89a.

89a

89b

In this case, in the P746 topology, the position will be seen closed only
when the isolator will arrive at the closed position. This is not
ecommended as the P746 may trip in 2 steps instead of 1 in case of a
fault appearing during the closing period of the isolator.

See tutorial regarding confidentiality

Presentation title - 01/01/2010 - P 38 disclosures. Delete if not needed.
P746 : Isolator State Monitoring(3)

Use of the two positions information using AND

logic

89A

89B

In this case, in the P746 topology, the position will be forced as open as
soon as the isolator will leave the closed position. This is not
recommended as the P746 may trip in 2 steps instead of 1 in case of a
fault appearing during the closing period of the isolator.

P746: Key Differentiation Factors

COST OPTIMIZED:
 Centralized architecture adaptable to most of the busbar configurations
 2 zones + Check Zone and 6 feeders (one box solution) or 18 feeders (three
box solution)
 Easy engineering : topology as setting
 No need for independent CTs

FAST:
 12ms at 50Hz (10ms at 60Hz) with high break / high speed contacts
 17ms at 50Hz (14ms at 60Hz) with standard contacts

SECURE:
 Multiple criteria unaffected by CT saturation and optional voltage criteria
 Integrated Circuit Breaker Failure and Dead Zone Protection
