ends which are to be assembled to other steel parts of the structure shall not have an error greater
than 1.5 mm for members 10 meters or less in length and not more than 3 mm for member over 10
meters in length.
Before being laid off worked in any manner, structural steel shall be straight without twists, bends,
wrinkling and if straightening is necessary, it shall be done in a method which shall not injure the metal
to ensure good welding and fitting of members, all steel shall be cleaned of dirt, mill scale and rust
prior to fabrication.
Shearing, chipping and gas cutting shall be performed carefully and all portions of the work which is
exposed to view shall present a neat appearance. Planning or finishing of sheared or cut edges of plate
or shapes will not be required except as noted in these specification.
6
The edges of plates and shapes to be joined by welding shall be properly formed to suite the type of
welding selected as per instructions of engineer-in charge.
Where bending or forming of plates or shapes is required the plates or shapes shall be bent by cold
forming. Heating and hammering to correct bend shall not be permitted.
Open holes in materials 18mm in thickness shall be sub drilled or sub punched before assembly and
reamed during assembly. Holes in structural steel more than 18 mm in thickness shall be drilled 3 mm
smaller than the normal diameter of the rivet or bolt before assembled, reamed to the full size during
assembly. All members shall be assembled before reaming or drilling holes for filled connection.
Except where reaming to size or tapping is required or where tight fit holes or dowels are to be used,
full size drilled or reamed holes shall be not less than 0.75mm or more than 1.5mm larger than the
nominal diameter of the rivet or bolt used. Holes shall be accurately located and drilled or reamed
Perpendicular to the face of member and if necessary shall be drilled to a template counter sinking,
where required shall be done carefully and to the full depth of head. Drilling or reaming during
assembly shall be done after the pieces forming the built up member are assembled and firmly bolted
to gather with surface in close contract. All reaming shall be done with machines and all outside burns
shall be removed.
3.1 GENERAL:
If any changes required to be done in fabrication parts of Gates and its parts for keeping them in
alignment while erection, the same should be done by contractor without any extra cost but with prior
approval of Engineer-in-charge.
The erection methods including requirement of work shall have prior approval of the Engineer No
erection work shall be started until all the members and materials required for any particulars
locations are correctly available. Care shall be taken during erection to handle and properly support all
materials and pieces so that they are not bent, distorted or otherwise damaged. Temporary bracings
as may be required shall be provided to take care of all temporary stress from erection equipment or
other construction loads. These bracings shall be left in place as long as they may be required for
protection of work and safety of workman. In the event of any damage caused to any piece or material
which cannot be corrected in the field, the same shall be returned to the fabrication shop for
attention of furnishing of new ones.
All parts shall be accurately assembled and erected to the established lines and levels as shown in the
drawings. The match marks as marked in the fabrication shop shall be correctly and carefully followed
before final welding is done. Dimensions and alignments of assembly make ready for each shall be
checked for correctness of size and alignment. This check shall be reported after the final welding is
done. Visual inspection of all the field welds shall be carried out during and after erection.
7
All the work of erection shall be performed and completed very skillfully, methodically and technically
to the specifications and to the satisfaction of the Engineer-in-charge. The contractor shall warrant all
materials and workmanship furnished by him to be free of cost all defective materials supplied by him
or rectify improper workmanship as directed by the Engineer-in-charge and without claiming any extra
cost.
Welding shall be carried out by applicable relevant IS: Code for Fabrication Work. All welding shall be
done by the electric arc method by a process which will exclude the atmospheres from the molten
metal except where otherwise specifically permitted. The welding electrodes shall be of the heavily
coated type designed for all position welding
In welding precautions shall be taken to minimize stresses due to heat by using the proper sequences
in welding by peeling the welds while hot or by other satisfactory methods, correction of distortion by
blows after welding is completed and piece is cold, will not be permitted upon completion the weld
shall be brushed with wire brushes and shall show uniform section, smooth ness of weld metal,
further edges without excessive overlaps, and free from porosity and clinkers. Visual inspection at
edges and ends of fillets and butt joint weld shall indicate good fusion and penetration in to base
metals.
All welding will be carried out in accordance with the code of practice for metal are welding for
general construction in mild steel IS-816-1992 revised up to date unless otherwise specifically
permitted. The electrodes used for welding should confirm to IS 814-1991.The make and type of
electrodes used must be got approved from the Engineer in charge. Electrodes used for SS material
should be as AWS 316-16, IS 5206 E19-12.2R -16.
The size and shape of welding to be done will be as shown in the drawing. In case of ambiguity; the
decision of the Engineer-in charge will be final and binding.
A.C. Supply may be used for general purpose welding, but where the electrodes manufacture or the
Engineer-in-charge recommends the use of D.C. Supply for better quality of welding for specific
electrodes or job applications the contractor shall use D.C. for welding generating sets.
The welding electrodes used shall be of approved quality best suited for the purpose for which they
are used and the size and brand of electrodes as approved by the Engineer in charge shall be used.
8
4.1 Electrodes for general purpose welding
A heavy titanium base flux coated all position X-Ray quality electrode confirming to Asw coding E-6013
and I.S. code No. M 317443 or its nearest equivalent similar to advani orlikons "Over cored" electrode.
This electrode may be used for welding joints and plates below 7/8"or 22mm thickness,
A heavy low Hydrogen type flux coated all position electrodes confirming to AWS coding E-7016 and
I.S. coding 611459 or its nearest equivalent suitable for A.C.-D.C. supply similar to advani oerlikons or
equivalent "Universe" electrodes.
These electrodes are recommended for welding heavy sections above 7/8" thickness (above 22mm),
important or complicated joints and where M.S. and cast steel are to be welded. The electrode must
be dried in a suitable oven before use.
Stainless steel electrode with medium heavy type white Flux coating and low carbon 18/8 Austenitic
deposit similar to "Irox AW" electrodes of Advani oerlikons or its nearest equivalent. These electrodes
are to be used for welding stainless steel to stain less steel or stainless steel to mild steel
Automatic or semi-automatic submerged arc or metal inter gas type welding may be adopted
wherever possible if required equipment and personal are available and after obtaining the approval
of the Engineer-in-Charge.
Visual inspection at edges and butt joint well shall indicate good fusion and penetration in to base
metal. In case of doubts, the Engineer-in charge shall have to right to cut coupons from any location in
any joints for testing. Should any two coupons cut from the work show strength under test less than
that of the base metal, the work shall be rejected. When coupons are removed from any part of a
structure, the member shall be repaired at the expense of the contractor in a neat and workman like
manner with joints of proper type to develop the full strength of the members and joints cut and with
peering as necessary.
