Journal Questions
Answer the following seven journal questions after completing your lab.  (2 points each)

1. List the fish and invertebrates you selected after the nitrogen cycling process.

Fish: 6 Yellow Tang in week 8 and another 10 Seargent Major in week 10

Invertebrates: 2 Rose Anemone, 1 Scarlet Hermit Crab, and 2 Cleaner shrimp.

2. What changes did you make to your reef tank during the twelve weeks and why did
you make them?

At week 1, I put nothing but Tonga Live Rock and Marshal Island Live Rock

From week 1 to week 7, I constantly poor in water and testing ammonia, nitrate,
nitrite and pH level, and when the pH level got high, I poor the buffer solution to
balance it out.

In week 8, I put 2 Rose Anemones, 1 Scarlet Hermit Crabs, 2 Cleaner shrimps, and 6
Yellow Tangs.

In week 11, I put another 10 Sergeant Major fishes.

All of them stay alive.

3. What problems, if any, did you have with any of the fish or invertebrates in the reef
tank?

I don’t have with any problems with the fish or invertebrates in the reef tank. All of
the stats (temperature, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite and pH level) have been tracked and
the fishes is selected carefully so they can survive.

4. Describe the final population of the reef tank.

At the end, there are Tonga Live Rock, Marshal Island Live Rock, 2 Rose Anemones, 1
Scarlet Hermit Crabs, 2 Cleaner shrimps, 6 Yellow Tangs, and 10 Sergeant Major fishes.

5. Compare the initial and final populations. What changes did you make to make to
keep the fish and invertebrates alive?

At first, there was nothing. I put only Tonga Live Rock and Marshal Island Live Rock
in week 1. From week 1 to week 7, I put water and buffer solution in to make sure the
stats (temperature, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite and pH level) are good enough for the
fishes to live.

6. Study the data you collected. Describe the occurrences of ammonia, nitrite, and
nitrate in your tank.

Ammonia: The first 2 week, it remained at 0.00, however, it slightly increased to

0.02 from week 3 to 5. From then, it remained at 0.00 and increased again to 0.01
from week 9 to 12

Nitrite: week 1 > 3 : 0.00 week 4 > 5 : 0.01 week 6 > 7: 0.03 week 8 > 9: 0.00 week
10 > 12 : 0.01

Nitrate: week 1 > 9 : 0.00 week 10 > 12 : 0.1

7. Study the data you collected. Why is the population in the reef tank stable?

The population is stable because of the buffer solution, and constantly adding water
make the environment livable by controlling certain aspect (temperature, ammonia,
nitrate, nitrite and pH level) The Scarlet Cleaner Shrimp help control the algae.
