Different periods of the development of

Philippine Literature

Philippine literature in English has its roots in the efforts of around 600 educators in the S.S. Thomas the
“Thomasites” in 1901 to replace the soldiers who had been serving as the first english teachers.

Developments of Philippine literature in English only prove that literature and writing are able to survive
mainly through the active imagination of writers. What was lacking during the period was for the writers
in the various languages to come to a conclusion on the elements that constitute good writing in the
Philippines.
