    Philippine literature in English has its roots in the efforts of educators known as Thomasites in 1901 to teach English after the Spanish-American war. During the Commonwealth period, notable authors included Zoilo Galang, Rodolfo Dato, Jose Garcia Villa, and Pablo Laslo. After World War 2, important works were Without Seeing the Dawn by Stevan Javellana and Watch in the Night by Edilberto Tiempo. Philippine literature continued to develop through the 20th century, showing that literature can survive through the imagination of writers, though agreement was still lacking on what constituted good writing in the Philippines.

    Philippine literature in English has its roots in the efforts of around 600 educators in the S.S. Thomas the
    “Thomasites” in 1901 to replace the soldiers who had been serving as the first english teachers.

    Developments of Philippine literature in English only prove that literature and writing are able to survive
    mainly through the active imagination of writers. What was lacking during the period was for the writers
    in the various languages to come to a conclusion on the elements that constitute good writing in the
    Philippines.
