The key takeaways are the steps involved in facial treatments using electrotherapy machines.

The steps involved in a galvanic desincrustation treatment are: preparation, application of gel, use of rollers on the face and neck for 5-7 minutes, and product removal.

The steps involved in a galvanic iontophoresis treatment are: carrying out desincrustation first, checking polarity, applying product, using rollers for 7-10 minutes ensuring coverage of face and neck area.

Step-by-step
Preparation and method – galvanic desincrustation treatment

1 Set up machinery with all appropriate equipment required. Check polarity of the desincrustation gel and set
machine accordingly.
2 Carry out a full consultation.
3 Prepare client on the couch, with turban in place to keep hair away from the current, and remove eye-make up,
then cleanse the skin thoroughly – twice is ideal to remove both make-up and perform a deep cleanse. Remove
cleanser and blot, so the skin is clean and grease-free.
4 Carry out thermal and sensitivity testing on the face.
5 If steaming or pre-warming of the skin is required, it should be carried out now, but remember not to
over- stimulate the face and adjust timings accordingly – some manufacturers do not recommend steaming, but
prefer a mild exfoliant to be used in place of the second cleanse.
6 Test the machine on yourself and in front of the client – if required, test it on the client, too – so the client feels
the sensation and is comfortable with it.
7 Give the client the covered, neutral electrode (bar) to hold in a hand without jewellery on, and make sure the
sponge glove is damp, but not wringing wet – some companies do not require the bar to be covered (always check).
8 Decant desincrustation gel into a bowl, and apply to the face with either massage movements or a mask brush.
9 Make contact with the roller on the skin, and turn up the current gradually, until the client feels a tingling sensation;
turn down the intensity slightly and introduce the other roller to the face.
10 Use slow, even, rhythmic movements all over the face, but do not allow the rollers to come into contact with
one another.
11 Follow the directions of the arrows (see the next page) and work all over the face and neck area – approximately 5–7
minutes depending upon skin type and reaction, etc.
12 When roller use is completed, remove one roller; keep the one in contact with the skin moving and turn current
down and then off. Remove other roller.
13 Change to ball or double-pronged electrode and start machine again,
with electrodes in contact with the skin, working around the crevice of the nose and chin area.
14 Turn off the current, remove the electrode and thoroughly remove all the product with damp sponges.
15 Comedone extraction with sterile probe or covered fingers can now be completed.

Step-by-step
Preparation and method – galvanic iontophoresis treatment
1 Carry out desincrustation procedure before beginning iontophoresis (shown on
pages 00–00).
2 Check polarity of product most suitable for skin type and change polarity of
active roller to positive. Always test machine on self in front of client.
3 Some products for iontophoresis come in ampoule form and care should be
taken when breaking the glass – always use a tissue and break the ampoule over
the trolley, not over the client.
4 Apply product all over face and neck with mask brush or fingertips.
5 Set the intensity to 0.15–0.25 milliamps, depending upon machine and 3
recommendations.
6 Follow steps 9–14 from the desincrustation procedure (on page 262). Allow 7–10
minutes for the routine, ensuring that the roller movements cover all the face
and neck area.
7 Use rollers or fork electrodes.

8 Manual massage. Follow the suggested

routine given for the products you are using
– some companies recommend leaving on
the iontophoresis cream/gel, adding more
and then carrying out a manual massage
with no current involved. This ensures that
the active ingredients work on, through the
massage.
9 Remove the residue of the massage cream
and apply a suitable mask. It is usually a
good idea to use the one recommended by
the same product suppliers as again the 7 8
active ingredients will be in the face mask
so that the good work of balancing and rehydrating the skin continues. Other routines may suggest that a
mask at this point would be too drying, so you will need to be flexible in your learning, and appreciate
that different companies follow slightly different routines, suitable for their own products and equipment.
10 Carry on with direct high frequency application with oxygenating cream to increase oxygen levels in the
skin, and finish the treatment with a drying germicidal finish to the skin. Some companies recommend a
toning gauze mask and a moisturiser to complete the treatment; others recommend that the skin should
be left alone after high frequency, so that the benefits of the treatment are not disturbed – always follow
the procedure of the system you are using. Moisturise using appropriate products.
