RESEARCH METHODOLOGY ASSIGNMENT

1. What type of research would you need to conduct for Mr. Anil Mehra?

Ans:- According to the case study, the main focus of the research is aimed at finding an immediate
solution to the problem being faced by Mr. Anil within a time frame and fixed budget.

The type of research needs to be action oriented and should yield immediate results. Hence,
APPLIED RESEARCH will be conducted to ensure external validity and effective decision making by
the company.

2. What are the steps that you will need to carry out in your study?

Ans:- STEPS:

1) Problem identification. (Whether or not to launch a sports daily?)

2) Need identification. (Is there a need for a sports daily; amount of the need to check
economic sustainability.)
3) Identifying units of analysis (Respondents), from whom the information and are sought.
(Respondents should be sports lover.)
4) Identifying various alternatives (of getting sports related news) available in the market.
5) Defining Sample size (based on budget for the field survey).
6) Constructing a multi item scale containing various attributes of satisfaction in order to
judge degree of satisfaction/ dissatisfaction with the sports section of the daily
newspapers.
7) Conducting an Exploratory Research via informal interview with the respondents, focus
group discussion, literature review and secondary data analysis.
8) Estimating the total no. of dissatisfied people (of the sample) from the newspapers. This
would give the MARKET SIZE.
9) Identifying the attributes on which the sports daily must concentrate (if economically
favourable market size is obtained).
10) Identifying the variables:
a) Independent variable:
People’s interests
Hobbies
Time preferences
Price limit
b) Dependent variable:
Sales generated
11) Identifying and controlling Extraneous variables ( environmental conditions)
e.g.:- Cable TV which would go against the study assumption that there is no alternative
available to get fresh news on sports.

3. What aspects (hint: for this refer to the section on features of a good research study) would
you take into account while designing the study?

Ans:- Aspects are:-

a. Identify the problem and set a realistic Goal.

b. Consider all the outcomes.
c. Know the context(source of traffic, bias, subjectivity) to better understand responses.
d. Eliminate researcher's bias.
e. Beware of subjectivity (by practicing reflexivity).
f. Understand the Who? (Smaller the sample, better the results)
g. Select right research methods and data collection tools.
h. Intense and effective observation of sample behaviour.
i. Consider the Response rate.
(RR= no. of valid responses/no. of people in sample)

In general, the features of a good research are:-

 Objectivity
 Reliability
 Validity
 Generalisability
