THE COMPETENCY OF BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY JUNIOR HIGH

SCHOOL STUDENTS IN UTILIZATION OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN

COMPREHENSIVE READING AND WRITING.

Background of the Study:

The Philippines Ranked second to the lowest in Reading comprehension

among 79 participating countries and economizer of the 2018 PISA. Within the

2018 Programme for International Student Assessment Reading is a main

subject assessed among 15-year old students. The Philippines had an average

reading score of 340, more than 200 points below China (555) and more than

100 points less than the OECD average (487).In the Philippines, boys’ and girls’

performances in reading both ranked lowest among PISA-participating countries.

Majority of the students react negatively or refuse when given a literary

piece or novel for report, compositions and analyses for submission. This is

based on the experiences and observations of their English subject teachers that

is also noticed by their science and mathematics teachers. The students often

encounter difficulties on analysing mathematical word problem, articulating their

ideas and applying theory in given situation.

Poverty is way too common in the country, the lack of textbooks present in

schools around the country and the educational system is just one of many

manifestations of it. The findings revealed that the current curriculum needs a lot

of improvement in specificity, internal coherence, and Integration of essential

principles in the 21st Century Learning and language teaching and learning.

This study is to Determine The Competency of BatStateU Junior High in

utilization of English Language comprehensive reading and writing. After all this

articles and results, does this reflect on the performance of the student in

Batangas State University? Does having the subject English made sufficient

knowledge for them to use English language easier and with comprehension?

How does their knowledge in English reflect on their performance with the other

subjects that is linked with English language such as science and mathematics?

The researchers plan is to conduct a descriptive research that uses survey

forms for the respondents that should be a BatStateU Junior High School

student. Thru the results the researchers shall determine the level of

competency of the students.

Statement of the Problem:

This study aims to identify the Competency of the Batangas State

University Junior High Students in Utilization of English Language in

Comprehensive Reading and Writing. Especially it aims to answer the following

question:

1. Is there a significant difference with the student’s performance in

English Language that affects their capacity to excel in other major

subjects?

2. Is there a significant difference between the results of the PISA

examination and the student of Batangas State University Junior High

School Department?

3. Does Batangas State University Junior High School reflect the results

of The PISA 2018?

Methodology

This study aims to determine on how competent Batangas State

University Junior High School Students are in Utilization of English Language in

Comprehensive Reading and Writing. The method that the researchers will be

using in this paper is Descriptive Quantitative Research method, wherein

researchers will conduct a survey that would gather data from the respondents.

Each respondent will be given a survey questionnaire that would define their

competency in utilization of their knowledge in reading and writing in English

language. The target respondents of the questionnaire will be the Junior High

School students of Batangas State University that is approximately 15 years old.

The researcher would be identifying the factor that affects the students’

knowledge in English reading and writing skills and how it affects their confidence

in terms of using it in communicating and in different aspects of living.
