Research Process

The research proposal examines how improving students' sense of belonging can positively impact their performance in high school. The study will survey students at the beginning and end of the school year to measure changes in their feelings of belonging. It hypothesizes that methods like mentoring and increased faculty involvement can create an environment where students feel more comfortable and welcomed. The goal is to determine effective strategies for improving cultural proficiency and students' sense that they belong at their school.

I. Title: You Belong! Study of Students' Sense of Belonging and its Effects on Performance

II. Overview of Research:

The area of study regarding this paper revolves around cultural proficiency in high

schools and different strategies to improve a sense of community. Student retention rates in high

schools are increasing, and many believe that this can be improved through the utilization of

community building strategies as well as improving student-faculty relations. This study focuses

on the behavioral responses as well as the academic and social outcomes of students who face

different levels of belonging. The researcher will examine the student culture at the beginning of

a school year and compare it to the end of a school year in order to determine the different

methods used to support students if an improvement occurs.

III. Background and Rationale:

The cause of the decline in student retention rates can be examined through the culture

within high school. This common trend can be solved through schools cultivating an

environment with a high sense of community as well as emphasizing the point of belonging.

One of the ways this can be achieved is through improved through stronger faculty-student

relations. By improving the faculty-student relations, students not only have help navigating

through school, but there is an improvement in both the students’ academic and social life.

There comes an intrinsic motivation and self efficacy when students are exposed to environments

where they feel a sense of belonging. There are studies done that show how a student’s

academic success can be traced back to their school-based social bonds. Students who are
comfortable and feel like they belong are more likely to find the motivation to achieve academic

success. Not only does the sense of belonging leads to improved academics, but a sense of

belonging leads to improved emotional and social well-being. Students who are exposed to

environments that emphasize the importance of student engagement develop social and

emotional competencies that contribute back to a culture full of belonging.

IV. Primary Research Methodology

The question this research aims to answer is what methods are used to improve the

student culture and sense of belonging. It is hypothesized that methods such as mentoring and

increased faculty involvement will contribute to an environment where students will feel

comfortable and welcomed. In order to measure this effect, the researcher will collect data using

surveys. At the beginning of the school year, Glenelg High School students were given a survey

asking them to rate how they feel about Glenelg’s culture. All of the questions aimed to

determine how great the sense of belonging in Glenelg is. At the end of the year, the same

survey will be administered, and it will be interesting to see if students’ sense of belonging

improved compared with the different methods implemented. The Glenelg faculty has been

training and providing ways to help encourage the student body; a lot of this energy is focused

on helping the Freshman class become better integrated into high school. If there is an

improvement on the second survey, then the researcher will be able to know what methods

actually work when improving cultural proficiency and sense of belonging.
