Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy was born in Colombo, Ceylon, now Sri Lanka. He was born on 22nd
August 1877. His father was Muthu Coomaraswamy and his mother was Elizabeth Beeby. Coomaraswamy
attended Wycliffe College in Gloucestershire and entered University College, London. He studied Geology
and Botany. Then he served in Sri Lanka as a geologist and mineralogist. Coomaraswamy wrote more than
30 books on different subjects. Origin of the Buddha Image, The Essential Elements of Buddhist
Iconography etc. are some of the books he wrote. Coomaraswamy made important contributions to the
philosophy of art, literature, and religion. This great person died in 1947 at the age of 70.
