Who Made This World and the People In It?

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” -Genesis 1:1

Probably every person has wondered many times – who made the world? Who made the people? Why am I
here? Who is God? Where is He? What is going to happen to the world and the people in it? Why do people
sin? How can we know what is right? We are going to study these questions and host of others in this Bible
Course. In this first lesson we shall study, “Who made this world and the people in it?” And now as you start
this lesson, can you bow your head in prayer and ask the Lord to make it clear to you?

THE CREATION

1. Who made the world according to the Bible?

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” – Genesis 1:1 It is clear that the Bible is asserting an
idea of creation. God is the Creator – of the “heavens and the earth.” This is in direct contrast to the
evolutionary theory that negates the notion of God and of intelligent design.

2. Through whom did God create all things?

“For by Him (Jesus) all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible... All
things were created through him and for him.” – Colossians 1:16 “God, who at various times and in various
ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom
He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also he made the worlds.” – Hebrews 1:1-2 “In the
beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with
God. All things were made through Him (Jesus), and without Him nothing was made that was made.” – John
1:1-3

3. Was the Holy Spirit involved in the creation of the world?

“The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was
hovering over the face of the waters.” – Genesis 1:2 Here we see that three Persons called the “Godhead” all
cooperated in the creation of this world.
In the narrative of the creation account, the Book of Genesis is clear to the notion of the “Godhead.” Consider
this: “Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness…” – Genesis 1:26 It is not
God talking to angels as supposed by some but a statement of God Himself telling the Godhead of their
creative endeavor relating to human beings. Some people may ask, “But I thought we believe in only one
God?” Yes, that’s right. But our one God is represented by three personalities: (1) God, the Father, (2) God,
the Son–Jesus, and (3) God, the Holy Spirit. These three are one in purpose, work, and plan.

4. How many did Jesus say make up the Godhead?

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son
and of the Holy Spirit.” – Matthew 28:19 In this great gospel verse, Jesus shows clearly that there are three
persons in the Godhead – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This truth is understood as the Trinity. That there is one
God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, a unity of three co-eternal persons.

THERE MUST BE A CREATOR

5. What does the Bible say of a person who claims that there is no God?

“The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God.’” – Psalm 53:1 It was in the late 18th century when many
people began to teach the false idea that the world just “happened;” that animal life on the earth started from
some slimy mass millions of years ago, and that it kept changing until man happened to develop. But that is
not what the Bible teaches. The Bible states that people would actually be more willing to say that animals
were responsible for their own origin than they were made by the Creator. (See Romans 1:22-23, 25.)

ORIGIN OF VEGETATION AND ANIMALS

6. Who made the vegetation and animals in the beginning of our world?

“Then God said, ‘Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit
according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth’; and it was so.” – Genesis 1:11 “And God made the
beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth
according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.” – Genesis 1:25 If you will read the first chapter of
Genesis, you will see that God made the fish, fowls, seas, etc. This chapter explains the origin of all forms of
life on this earth. God created them all.

7. Did man come from the animal family?

If not, after whom was he originally patterned? “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God
He created him; male and female He created them.” – Genesis 1:27 It was God who created man in this world
in the first place – He created man in His image. Aren’t you glad to know you were created by God and did not
evolve from apelike ancestors?

ORIGIN OF THE STARS

8. What else God has made?

“Then God made two great lights: the greater light (the sun) to rule the day, and the lesser light (the moon) to
rule the night. He made the stars also.” – Genesis 1:16

9. Who made all the stars and planets in the universe according to David?

“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.” – Psalm 19:1 “When I
consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained…” –
Psalm 8:3

HOW DID GOD CREATE?

10. How did God create all things?

“By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth… For he
spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast.” – Psalm 33:6, 9 These verses tell us plainly that
God spoke the word and all things in the universe came into being.

11. How can we only understand God’s ability to make something out of nothing?

“By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen
were not made of things which are visible.” – Hebrews 11:3 We can understand creation only by faith. Let’s
not say we don’t believe in God simply because we do not see Him or understand exactly how He works. Let’s
imagine that you have a blind little dog. He can’t think as you can. He can’t do the things you can. Wouldn’t it
be foolish for your little dog to say you didn’t exist just because he couldn’t see or understand you?

GOD’S MEMORIAL OF CREATION

12. At the end of creation week, how did God celebrate His wonderful work?

“Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. And on the seventh day God ended
His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then
God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created
and made.” – Genesis 2:1-3 “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have
understanding… When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?” – Job 38:4, 7
At the end of God’s creative work, He rested on the seventh day, blessed it, and sanctified it. All the created
beings in other parts of the universe sang together and shouted for joy in honor of the wonderful work of God’s
creation.

OUR DUTY TO OUR CREATOR

13. How should a youth regard the Maker? Why?

“Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, before the difficult days come, and the years draw
near when you say, ‘I have no pleasure in them.’” – Ecclesiastes 12:1 It is never too late studying these
lessons, whether you are young or advanced in age. However, thousands of older people wish they had chosen
to follow God when they were younger. Now they find that they have wasted their lives because of earthly
pursuits.

14. Can a youth be expected to understand God’s plan?

“And that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation
through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” – 2 Timothy 3:15 15. Since God is our Creator, what does He expect of
His Children? “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this
is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be
good, or whether it be evil.” – Ecclesiastes 12:13, KJV Since God is our Maker, it is expected of us that we
obey and trust Him. He knows all about us and what the future will bring. He knows what is best for us at all
times and under all circumstances, so we can trust His love and wisdom. He will accept you as His child and
will protect and keep you if you will determine just now, by God’s help, to obey Him. For as our verse says,
“This is the whole duty of man.”
