The document describes the design of circular pile reinforcement including calculation of forces, sizing of longitudinal and lateral reinforcement, and checks on capacity.

The design of a circular pile with a diameter of 1200mm that is subject to an axial load of 10327kN and a resultant bending moment of 1771kNm.

The steps included calculating the eccentricity, total moment, sizing the longitudinal reinforcement, providing lateral ties, and checking capacity in uniaxial bending.

CIRCULAR PILE REINFORCEMENT DESIGN :
RESULTS FROM STAAD PRO

Factored Axial Compression Pu = 10327 kN

Factored Moment Mz = 126 kN-m
Factored Moment MY = 1766 kN-m
For Design purpose, resultant moment to be considered.
Resultant Moment MR = 1771 kN-m ( MR = sqrt(Mx2+My2) )

DESIGN FOR COMPRESSION REINFORCEMENT

Diameter of Pile D = 1200 mm

Length of Pile L = 8125 mm
Factored Axial Compression Pu = 10327.0 kN
Resultant Moment MR = 1771.0 kN-m
Grade of concrete M40 fck = 40 N/mm2
Grade of steel Fe500 fy = 500 N/mm2
Clear cover dc = 75 mm
Area of concrete Ac = 1130973.36 mm2

Effective length, Lex = 1.2 L = 9750 mm (Table:28 IS 456:2000)

Step 1 : Type of column :

Lex/D < 12 ,Short Column and Lex/D > 12 ,Long Column (As per Cl 25.1.1, IS 456:2000)
Lex/D = 8.1
SHORT COLUMN
DESIGN PROCEDURE FOLLOWED AS SHORT COLUMN
Step 2 : Minimum Eccentricity e=ex=ey :For Circular section (As per Cl 25.4, IS 456:2000)

e = Max ( (L/500)+(D/30) , 20 ) = 56.3 mm

Step 3 : Moment due to eccentricity :

Me = (10327*56.3)/1000 = 581.42 KN-m

Step 4 : Total Moment :

MRt = ( MR + Me )
MRt = (1771+581.42) = 2352.4 KN-m

Longitudinal reinforcement :

Min. % of reinforcement p = 0.80% (As per Cl 26.5.3.1,IS 456:2000)

Assumed % of reinforcement = 0.80%

Diameter of reinforcement used = 25 mm
p / Fck = 0.020 (From SP-16 charts)

d' / D = 0.073 (d' = dc + ɸ/2 )

Pu / FckD2 = 0.179

Factored bending moment, Mu / FckD3 = 0.048 ( From SP-16 charts-60 )

Mu1 = 0.0477*40*1200^3
= 3297.02 KN-m > 2352 KN-m Safe.

Area of Steel required for compression :

Asc,req = 9047.78 mm2
Area of steel provided :
Area of steel required Asc,req = 9047.78 mm2
Diameter of main reinforcement, ɸ = 25.00 mm
Number of bars n = 20.00 Nos

Total Area of steel provided :

Asc,pro = 9816.75 mm2 > 9048 mm2 Ok.
pt,pro = 0.87 > 0.8 Safe.

Hence Provide 20 nos of 25ø bars as Longitudinal reinforcement

Lateral Ties: (As per Cl 26.5.3.2, IS 456:2000)

Diameter of lateral tie ɸt = 10.00 mm

Provide 10 ø ties at a spacing of least of the following :
a) 16 times the dia of longitudinal bar = 400.00 mm
b) Least Lateral dimension of pile = 1200.00 mm
c) 300 mm = 300.00 mm
Spacing of lateral ties provided = 275.00 mm

Hence Provide 10ø @ 275mm c/c bars as lateral ties

*AS per 2911(Part1/Sec2):2010 Stiffener rings preferably of 16 mm diameter at every 1.5 m centre-to-
centre should be provided along length of the cage for providing rigidity to reinforcement cage.

Check for Uniaxial bending :

Total area of Pile (π/4)*D2 = 1130973.35 mm2

Area of steel provided Asc,pro = 9816.75 mm2
Area of concrete Ac = 1121156.60 mm2 (Ac = Ag - Asc )

Ultimate axial capacity Puz = (0.45*fck*Ac) + (0.75*fy*Asc)

Puz = 23862.1001 kN > 10327 kN Safe.

Pu/Puz = 0.43 If Pu/Puz < 0 .2, αn = 1

( αn values are related to Pu/Puz ) If Pu/Puz > 0 .8, αn = 2
αn = 1.39 Pu/Puz αn
