Agriculture emerged around 10,000-15,000 years ago when humans began cultivating wild plants and herding livestock. This Neolithic Revolution led to permanent settlements as people no longer needed to hunt and gather. Agricultural societies saw the development of cities and more complex social hierarchies. Advances like crop rotation and new farming tools increased food production over time. While 90% used to farm for subsistence, now only 5% of people farm to feed a much larger population due to technological improvements in agriculture. Further innovations will be needed to meet growing global food demand in the future.

Dawn of Agriculture:
About 10 to 15 thousand years ago agriculture emerged around the planet when polished stone
tools were developed. Firstly, it spread from Mesopotamia, China, South America and sub-
Saharan Africa. As we explore more. The introduction of Agriculture is known as the Neolithic
Revolution since it harmonizes with the Neolithic time frame - or the new stone age. In start
humans grew wild species of plants and herded wild livestock. As time went on, they switched to
breeding of both animals and plants, creating new varieties and breeds and gradually began to
move away from hunting and gathering.

Agriculture tools found in late 5th century BCE

A New Social order:


Agricultural society made a massive ramification on the social sphere. Many human institutions
originated in towns and cities, that originated within a few thousand years of agricultural
transformation. People started living in larger, denser, and more permanent settlements. with
time Small settlements raised into towns, and towns converted into big developed cities for
centuries there is very little increased in productivity because in start humans grow only one crop
on same land. But after sometime during middle ages farmers start crop rotation or harvesting
different crops on same lands during different seasons. After industrial revolution there comes a
rapid change in the production. New metal tools were invented which increased the production
of crops with less land.

Changes in equipment have made a large impact on the way farmers are able to farm and grow
more food in short period of time e.g. Tractors, combines, plows, etc. Over 200 years ago,
approx. 90 percent of population is connected to farming and produced their own food to eat.
But today, only 5 percent of the population connected to farm produces food for the whole.
Better technology has reduced the burden of farmers and they are able produce more food with
fewer resources and less land. Also, Advancement in biotechnology plays a vital role in the
sustainability of society. Advancement in technology and increased production also changed the
lifestyle of humans. 200 years ago, people live in the form of tribes where they work today. But
with time due to increased production these cultures changed and families start living their own
lives. Also, Idea of ownership resulted escalation, which had important consequences for social
organization. surplus food supplies could support more population, and farming rigid people to
their land due to increased profits. Innovations in food production and distribution have helped
the food supply to accommodate rapid population growth.

Future Challenges:
World population will reach 9.1 billion by 2050 up from 7.4 billion in 2016. As indicated by a
report by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, farmers must expand food
creation by 70 percent contrasted with 2007 levels to address the issues of population. That’s
why there is need of more advanced tools that enable the farmers to produce more with less. In
coming years, we see more advancement in technology of farming. The future agricultural society
looks different than it does today.
