SITUATION A:
For a constant permeability on a fine sand, the following are given:
Length of Specimen = 15cm
Diameter of Specimen = 10cm
Constant Head Difference = 40cm
Volume of water collected in 5 minutes = 500cc
Void ratio of the soil specimen = 0.50
1. Determine the coefficient of permeability in cm/min
2. Determine the discharge velocity in cm/min
3. Determine the seepage velocity in cm/min

SITUATION B:
A falling head test has been conducted on a sand sample in a permeameter. The soil sample was 20mm in
diameter and 100mm tall. The standpipe has a diameter of 8mm. The initial head in the experiment is 350mm and the
head at the end of the test is 150mm. The test duration is 30 minutes.
4. Solve for the initial hydraulic gradient
5. Solve for the hydraulic conductivity in mm/min

SITUATION C:
A well is constructed to pump water from a confined aquifer. Two observation wells are constructed at distances
of 100m and 1000m respectively. Water is pumped from the pumping well at a rate of 0.20cu.m./min. At steady state,
the drawdown as observed is 2m and 8m respectively in the farthest and nearest observation wells. Diameter of the test
well is 1m, thickness of the aquifer is 20m.
6. Determine the hydraulic conductivity in cm/sec
7. Determine the transmissivity of the aquifer
8. Determine the drawdown in the test well

SITUATION D:
A 500mm diameter test well penetrates 30m below the statics water table. After 24 hours of pumping at 80
liters per second, the water level in an observation well at a distance of 100m from the test well is lowered 0.5m and
the other observation well at a distance of 40m from the test well, the drawdown is 1.1m.
9. What is the rate of flow in cu.m. per day?
10. Compute the coefficient of permeability of the aquifer in m/day
11. Determine the drawdown in the test well

SITUATION D:
A channel runs almost parallel to a river as shown in the figure. The water level in the river has an elevation of
36m and the elevation of the channel is 33m. The river and the channel are 600m apart and a pervious medium of
average thickness of 9m and hydraulic conductivity of 0.08m/hr joins them together. (See figure D)
12. Compute the hydraulic gradient
13. Compute the rate of seepage flow from river to the channel per meter width in liters per day
14. Compute the discharge velocity

SITUATION E:
15-18. Determine the equivalent hydraulic conductivity of the soil whose set up is shown in Figure E.
k1 = 10-5 cm/sec k2 = 3.5x10-5 cm/sec
-5
k3 = 3x10 cm/sec k4 = 3.5x10-3 cm/sec
