Size of shadow

The size of a shadow depends on the distance between the

light source and the object that blocks that light source AND
the size of the object.
If you have two people standing side-by-side outside on a
sunny day, the distance to the sun is the same for both
people. If one is taller than the other, that person’s shadow
will be bigger.
Read the following material and answer the given
questions at the end.
It would be harder to see the cat if
it was a black cat, because dark
colours do not reflect as much light
as pale colours.
1. Why can the cat see the torch?
• The cat can see the torch because light from
the torch is going in her eye.
2. What happens to the light from the torch
that reaches the cat’s fur?
• When light reaches cats fur, it will be reflected
back
3. Why can the girl see the cat?
• The girl can see the cat because some of the
reflected light goes into her eyes.
4. Imagine you are in the playground.
a What is the source of light?
Sun is the source of light
b Draw a diagram to show how you could see a
tree.
It has some black lines because the
of the window’s bars
Pipe a

Light travels in straight line, since pipe A is straight,

it will allow lines to pass while path B is curved
which stops the light.
Answers to Review Questions
(Textbook, pp.194-195)
Q-2
2. No, it is not true. When the switch is open, there is an
open circuit and no current flows through any part of the
circuit.

Q-3
Q-4
Copper is a better conductor of electricity than steel. This
means that copper wires will allow electric current to flow
through more easily than steel wires.

Q-5(a)
a. The number of batteries connected in series and the
type of wire used.
Q-5(b)

b. No. She has changed two variables instead of one in

her investigation.
Using different number of batteries can affect the
current flowing through the circuit, so she will not
know for sure whether it is the number of batteries or
the type of wire used which affects the brightness of
the bulbs.
To carry out a fair test, she should keep the number of
batteries the same in both circuits and change only the
type of wire used.
b. The metal loop acts like a contact switch. When it touches
any part of the curved wire, the circuit is closed and the bulb
lights up. If the metal loop does not touch the curved wire,
the circuit is open and the bulb does not light up.
c. Make more curves in the curved wire
Make the curved wire longer
Make the metal loop smaller
2. a. The longer the wire, the lower the
current in the circuit.
b. (i) Use the same circuit but change the thickness
of the wire while keeping the length between
point A and the steel paper clip constant. Observe
whether the bulb is brighter or dimmer when
wires of different thickness are used.
(ii) Use the same circuit but change the type of
metal which is used to make the wire. Keep the
length between point A and the steel paper clip
constant. Observe whether the bulb is brighter or
dimmer when different types of metal wires are
used.
Common misconceptions
• Electric current flows from the negative to the positive
terminal.
• Electric current is ‘used up’ by an electric bulb in a circuit, so
there is less current ‘going back’ tothe battery in the wire
after the electric bulb in a series circuit.
• The second bulb is less bright than the first bulb in a series
circuit because electric current has been ‘used up’ by the
first bulb in the circuit.
• In an open circuit, current flows to the part where there is a
gap and ‘turns back’ to the battery when it finds that it
cannot flow through the gap.
• Electric current is the same as electrical energy.
