(PINOCCHIO settles in as the others are
(SWAMP. A few FAIRYTALE checked in.)

(The FAIRY TALE CHARACTERS settle in. Chit-chat, etc. SHREK comes back. He's
confused and angry.)
SHREK
WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN MY SWAMP?!!!
(They gasp. Uh-oh, now what?)
PINOCCHIO
Well gosh, we were forced to come here.
SHREK
Forced? By who?
FAIRY GODMOTHER
Lord Farquaad! He hoofed and he poofed, and he signed an eviction notice.
SHREK
Huh. Well not my problem. Now you all need to turn around and go back where you came
from.
WITCH
Go back?! We can't go back!
FAIRY GODMOTHER
Hey, maybe you could try talking to Farquaad.
WITCH
Yeah, he'll listen to you! You're big and scary.
SHREK
I'm also an ogre, which means I stay on my swamp. Or haven't you read the stories??
WITCH

You mean those stories that say I'm a “wicked” witch?
(THEY all laugh uproariously.)
PINOCCHIO
Or the ones that say I'm a "wooden" boy! (off their uncomfortable silence)
What? I'm not a wooden boy. (nose grows - bwoooop)
FAIRY GODMOTHER
Look here, ogre. We don't want us here any more than you do. But you're the only one
tough enough to talk to Farquaad.
SHREK
Tough enough? You don't even know me.
FAIRYTALE CREATURES
(Begging) Oh Shrek, please, do it! We need you....
SHREK
Okay, fine, I get it! Attention all .. fairytale things! I'm gonna go see this Farquaad right
now, and get you all off my land and back where you came from!
FAIRY TALE CREATURES
(adlibbed celebration) Yay!
SHREK
I'll be right back. Don' t get comfortable! And don't touch my
(Something breaks inside his house.)
PINOCCHIO
Time to say goodbye! (hands him a map)
FAIRY TALE CREATURES
Goodbye!
(FAIRY TALE CREATURES leave the scene. FOREST. SHREK enters looking at his
map.)
SHREK
Now this can't be right, I'm all turned around...
(HE notices a crossroads sign pointing in different directions. In one direction, "SWAMP" -
and in the other, "DULOC.")
DONKEY
(jalling out of the sky)
Uh-oh. Help a Donkey out, would you?
(HE hides behind Shrek as the GUARD come running on. He stops in his tracks when he
sees Shrek.)
GUARD
Ugh, it's hideous!
SHREK
Aw, that's not very nice. It's just a Donkey. (DONKEY is confused.)
GUARD
(terrified) Step aside, ogre, and let me get at him.
SHREK
Why? What did he do?
DONKEY
I-don't-wanna-die- I-don't-wanna-die- I-don't-wanna-die...
GUARD
He's a talking donkey. A freak of nature. As are you. By order of Lord Farquaad, you’re
both under arrest.
SHREK
Under arrest, eh? (advance on him) ROOOOOOOOOOOOA A A A A A A A A A AR!!!!!!
(He freezes, Shrek whispers) This is the part where you run away.

GUARD
(HE does, screaming as he flees.)
(With that done, SHREK takes out a map and tries to figure out which way leads to Duloc.
DONKEY smiles up at his new hero.)
DONKEY
Can I just say? Man, that was incredible..
SHREK
(nose in the map) Oh good, I'm glad, now why don't you go celebrate with your friends?
DONKEY
But I don't have any friends.
SHREK
Now there's a shocker.
DONKEY
Heh-heh. Say, you lost or something?
SHREK
No, I'm just trying to figure out how to get to Duloc.
DONKEY
Oh, I know Dulac! You gotta let me show you the way!
SHREK
I'll be fine on my own, thanks.
DONKEY
But nobody's fine on their own! Not when you look like we do! (realizes he's losing him)
We gotta join forces! Or they're gonna lock me up again!
SHREK
(finally fed up) ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAR!
DONKEY
Whoa, that was really scary.
SHREK
Listen, little Donkey take a look at me. What am I?
DONKEY
Ahhh... really green?
SHREK
No! I'm an ogre! Doesn't that bother you?
DONKEY
Nope.
SHREK
Really?
DONKEY
Really really.
SHREK
Oh....?
DONKEY
What's your name?
SHREK
Shrek.
DONKEY
Shrek? Huh. Well, you know what I like about you, Shrek? You got that whole, "I don't care
what anybody thinks of me" thing. I like that, Shrek.
SHREK
(moves to go but DONKEY stops him)

DONKEY
Hey-hey-hey you gotta let me go with you. You don't know what it's like to be considered a
freak. Well maybe you do, but that's why we gotta stick together.
SHREK
Donkey....
DONKEY
(DON’T LET ME GO musical number)
SHREK
Alright, look, only because I'm lost, you can come-
DONKEY
(immediate hysteria and joy) Yeah! Woo-hoot alright-!
SHREK
(cuts him off)
On one condition! You keep the talking to a minimum.
DONKEY
You got it! No talking! Man, you will not regret this.
SHREK
Too late.
(THEY walk off together, DONKEY humming.)
