ABSTRACT:
Self compacting concrete-
concrete a special concrete with an extra ordinary property of
compacting itself, reduces the possibility of human error. With this, the combination of
Nano technology gives a marvelous growth in the construction field .Though theth use of
SCC, reduces the cost of manual compaction ,the use of SCC along with Nano
particles helps in finishing the construction work faster
faster by acquiring strength faster
This present study is about the influence of Nano technology on the properties of self
s
compacting concrete. By adding Nano materials like Nano silica, Nano Fe2O3, nano
TiO2, Nano Al2O3, etc,, to SCC, the rate rate of hydration, permeability,
permeability Durabilit,
Compressive strength, Splitplit tensile strength, Flexural strength is increased with
increase in concentration of Nano materials. The outcome of this paper is to enhance
the usage of nano particles in concrete to predict the properties of concrete
Keywords: Self compacting concrete, Nano silica, Nano technology, Flexural
strength, Durability, Compressive strength

1. INTRODUCTION:
The use of self compacting concrete is spreading worldwide because of its very attractive
properties in the fresh state as well as after hardening .The use of SCC will lead to a more
industrialized production, reduce the technical cost of in situ concrete constructions, improves

Application of Nano Technology in Self Compacting Concrete-A Review

the concrete quality, durability and eliminate some of the potential for human error. It will
replace manual compaction of fresh concrete with a modern semi automatic placing
technology.
Although self compacting concrete has been successfully used in Japan and European
there has been some reluctance to employ it in Australia and as a consequence it has suffered
very little development with local materials. The composition of concrete could sometime
consist of more than one type of cement (i.e. special cement, like ultra-fine alumina cement)
together with additions (normal, light weight and special types, fillers), admixtures such as
super plasticizer (SP), air entertainers and viscosity modifying agents. The use of industrial
byproducts, such as KA, SF, and QD offers a low-priced solution to the environmental
problem of depositing industrial waste.
Nano technology is a vast field with tremendous number of applications in every field.
Recently, there are abundant applications of nanotechnology in Construction field. Cement
mortar, a composite material, is a Nano structured material that ages over time. It is composed
of an amorphous phase, nanometer to micrometer size crystals bounded by water.
The use of Nano materials such as Fe2O3, TiO2, Silica, ZrO2, etc., acts as Nanofillers,
decreases the harmful voids and increases the permeability of the concrete. It also acts as
nucleation site, increases the rate of C-S-H gel formation, which increases the amount of
crystalline CA (OH)2 particularly at an early stage, which increases strength.

2. LITERATURE REVIEW:
A.A. Maghsoudi and F. Arab pourDahooei [1] have studied the influence of adding Nano -
particles in self-compacting concrete. They conducted experiments with four types of
concrete samples such as 1.SCC with only Nano silica 2.SCC with only micro silica 3.SCC
with both Nano and micro silica 4.SCC without Nano and micro silica and clearly understood
their influence on the properties of fresh and hardened SCC. They concluded that adding both
Nano and micro silica compounds have positive effect on the properties of both fresh and
hardened concrete.
A.A. Maghsoudi, M. Maghsoudi, and M. Noori [2] investigated the properties of SCC with
Nano silica and SCC without Nano silica by examining under Scanning electron microscope.
They proposed that combined use of Nano silica with micro silica can improve the hardened
properties of SCC.
Ali Nazari, Shadi Riahi [3] have studied the effect of Nano ZrO2 on the Split tensile strength
of Self compacting concrete. They found that partial replacement of cement up to 4% of its
weight can improve the rate of hydration and results in increased split tensile strength.
However replacing cement with NanoZrO2 above 4% of its weight will result in the decrease
in split tensile strength of SCC due to unsuitable dispersion of Nano particles.
Ali Khoshakhlagh, Ali Nazari and Gholamreza Khalaj [4] examined the properties of
High performance SCC by adding Nano sized Fe2O3. They concluded that adding Fe2O3 up
to 4% of weight of cement can improve the pore structure of the SCC and thereby improving
permeability of fresh concrete, compressive, split tensile and flexural strength of hardened
SCC.
George Quercia1 , Przemek Spiesz, Götz Hüsken and Jos Brouwers[5] performed a thesis
to compare the effect of fumed powder silica and colloidal suspension of precipitated silica in
SCC. They examined the samples under SEM and EDS and concluded that colloidal silica
have improved effects on the durability and other properties of SCC due to dandified pore
structure.

Mojdeh Mehrinejad Khotbehsara, and Shadi Fathi [6]: studied the impact of Nano TiO2
and flyash on strength, chloride permeability, water absorption of SCC. They performed tests
with constant increasing concentrations of both Nano TiO2 and flyash and finally proposed
that increasing concentration of TiO2 will increase the properties of SCC.
Mustafa Jalal1, Ali Akbar Ramezanianpour, Morteza Khazaei Pool [7] investigated the
rheological properties of SCC on addition of Nano sized TiO2 by conducting various tests
like slump test, V-funnel test, etc., and found that increase in concentration of TiO2 increased
the durability and decreased the probability of bleeding and segregation.
Bahareh Mehdizadeh Miyandehi, Babak Shadi Fathi and Morteza Mehrinejad
Khotbehsara [8] underwent a study regarding the use of nano Al2O3 in SCC.They maximum
size of Al2O3 used was 15 nm in different quantities such as 1%, 3%, 5% by weight with a
constant fly ash content oh 25%.Their tests have shown that SCC with 1% nano Al2O3 and
25% of fly ash replacement have improvedstrength, durability and properties.
S. Salkhordeh, P. Golbazi, and H. Amini [9] performed an analysis on two samples: one
with coarse recycled concrete aggregate and the other with fine recycled concrete aggregate
with water 0.50 and 0.45 respectively and constant cement content 350kg/m3.Replacement of
10% of weight of cement by nano silica in both the samples resulted in increase in
compressive strength.

3. CONCLUSION:
The use of nano material in self-compacting concrete has a great impact on the properties of
both fresh and hardened concrete. In fresh concrete, the nano materials influences the pore
structure , resulting in increases permeability and durability and thereby increasing the
compressive strength, split tensile strength ,flexural strength oh hardened concrete. The rate of
C-S-H formation is also increased, thus the SCC with nano materials acquires strength faster
than conventional concrete. In future, we are going to propose and investigate the effect of the
addition of various percentages of metakoline in the form of Nano metakoline in the beam
column joints.
