Reading Comprehension: The Incas

Name:___________________________________________ Date: July 6th

I. Read after your teacher models reading.

Incas occupied a vast territory in the Andes
Mountains of South America around the 15th and 16th
centuries. Their Empire or the Tahuantinsuyo - which in
their language means “the four regions” - settled its
capital in Cusco, now Peru. They ruled over about 12
million people at the highest point of their reign in the
1500s.

Incas developed diverse technologies. Their houses were built using stones or adobe (sun-baked
clay). The ruins of the Inca city of Machu Picchu are famous for their well-made buildings. Their
knowledge included Astronomy, Mathematics, Medicine, Hydraulics, Architecture, Record-
keeping (to maintain information of events) and Military Tactics. They had a major road system
of over 16,000 miles including Perú, Bolivia, and Chile.

They were productive farmers; they grew crops such

as corn, squash, tomatoes, peanuts, and cotton. Inca farmers
were the first to grow potatoes. They bred guinea pigs,
ducks, llamas, and alpacas.

Incas made their clothing from llama wool and cotton. They were
creative craftsmen, worked pottery pieces, as well as musical
instruments. They also made things out of metal.

They spoke Quechua, which was

used by more than 8 million natives; however, Incas had no form of writing. They recorded
events using a complicated system of coloured knotted cords called quipus.
The Emperor was the highest authority of Inca´s class structure followed by the Nobles, and the
Commoners. Most people in the Inca Empire were Commoners, who worked as farmers and
herders. Incas were polytheistic and most of their gods represented elements of the nature.
