Please do your best to acquaint yourself with the method of plotting a BaZi Chart, as you’ll need to attend the
class with your chart ready at hand, as well as to memorise (or at the very least, familiarize yourself with) the
Chinese Characters, as well as the Elements of the 10 Heavenly Stems and 12 Earthly Branches before your
BaZi class.
In the Introduction, I have outlined for you the ways in which you can prepare for the class to ensure an
outstanding learning experience.
Making the effort to learn and memorise this information beforehand will ensure a smoother learning experience
for you. Please come prepared for the classes with having at least read the Pre-Course Booklet from start to
finish.

How to Succeed in Class – before, during, and after!
Before
Before you attend BaZi Mastery Module 1, you will need to:
1) Read the notes provided in this Pre-Course Booklet to lay down the groundwork for your future
studies. Everything contained here are the essential pre-requisites to mastering BaZi, so making
the time and effort to master these basics now will ensure a smoother, easier time for you later!
2) Fill in the Practise Sheet. Practice writing the Chinese Characters to learn the BaZi Language. The
practice writing sheets are provided in this Booklet. Knowing these Chinese Characters relatively
well will make it easier for you to absorb the material in your classes as your study proceeds.
3) Plot your BaZi chart using the directions given to you in this booklet. You will need to bring this
chart with you on the first day of the class.
4) Obtain and read the necessary books as reference for your BaZi studies:
i. BaZi – The Destiny Code
ii. BaZi – The Destiny Code Revealed
iii. The Ten Thousand Year Calendar

While attending your class, it will be helpful if you could:
1) PRACTISE MAKES PERFECT. Put in the required effort needed to master the basics, understand
the concept of BaZi and by being familiar with the Chinese characters, you will learn the BaZi
language needed to understand the class, even if you have knowledge in the Chinese language,
you too should fill up your Practise Sheet as these characters are not normally used. It will become
much easier once you delve into the material, and the pay-off is worth it. But you must be willing
to put in the necessary legwork at the start.
2) Participate. The success of the class depends a lot on student involvement and participation,
so raise your hands, voice out concerns and thoughts, discuss, debate, and deliberate!
3) Try as much as possible to refer not to your own BaZi chart, but to the charts of others (plot charts
for family, friends, and loved ones). Doing this as practice greatly facilitates your learning process.
You will find it much easier to grasp and understand the material when you practice on the charts
of others as opposed to your own. This is one of our insider student tips, and thus an invaluable
one for your future use!
After
After your class is over, it will be good for you to be on top of your material and studies (paving the way
for future BaZi learning) by maintaining ‘good BaZi habits’ such as:
1) Reread the entire course material and workbook from start to finish.
2) Then, do practice analyses on your own BaZi chart, as well as many charts belonging to friends,
family and loved ones. The best way is to approach these charts as if you didn’t know them at all.
Don’t let what you know about them influence you in any way; analyse the charts impartially and
without bias. Be objective and dissect those charts using the exact principles and methods you
were taught.
3) You might want to consider pursuing BaZi Mastery Module 2 immediately after this. Module 2
contains much of the “juice” of BaZi study in terms of reading and analysing BaZi charts. Consider
taking Module 1 and 2 together to obtain a firmer grasp on BaZi Destiny Analysis.
4) Meet the students in class and get into study groups. This will help you progress further as well.

What is BaZi Destiny Analysis? 甚麼是八字命運分析?
Man is always fascinated by the great mysteries of life. Often, we wonder what our purpose
in this world is. For centuries, the Chinese have studied this question of the ‘Meaning of Life’
and accumulated much knowledge in the course of their research.
By studying the interaction between Man, the environment, time and the Universe (often
called Heaven), a pattern began to appear to the sages. This pattern represents the cyclical
influence of the energies in the Universe imprinted on us during the time of our birth. This
information is encrypted or coded in the form of Eight Characters (BaZi 八字). Thus the study
and practice of BaZi calculation is to allow us to decrypt this code and reveal our destiny.
BaZi is like a diagnostic method designed to understand the condition of the patient or the
person. Feng Shui is like a prescription used to treat a problem or condition the person may
be suffering from. It is common knowledge that many well known Feng Shui Masters are also
BaZi Masters. Or at least, they are good in one form of a Destiny analysis technique, like
Purple Star (Zi Wei 紫微) System.
The Eight Characters or Ba Zi represents the static chart of

our destiny. (The eight characters are called our ‘Ming’ or
Life.) Our Life Path or Destiny is calculated in what we call the
dynamic pillars where they represent 10-year periods of our
life. These pillars are known as Luck Pillars.
Luck Pillars can be considered the Luck factor. If we have a

good natal chart (Good Life Chart), we need to be supported
by the right luck in order for its true potential to be realised.
Conversely, a mediocre Life Chart can be helped by a good
set of Luck Pillars.
With a good Life Chart, Bad Luck Pillars are not too ruinous
as opposed to a Bad Life Chart entering Bad Luck Pillars.
The bumpy roads and smooth sailing journeys of our life,
all depend on the quality of our Luck Pillars. Each Pillar is made up of two Characters: a
Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. Their elements generally govern the 10 years of a
person’s life with the influence being more pronounced in the Heaven Stem for the first 5
years and the Earthly Branch for the subsequent 5 years.
A common question often asked by students is this: Do I need to study BaZi in order to
practice Feng Shui? So, it was no surprise to me when a student posed this question to me
over lunch the other day.
Why the need to study our destiny?
• It helps you plan your Feng Shui prescription for the long term.
• It helps in making informed decisions

- by understanding our cycle of good and bad fortune, we are able to undertake proper
planning and execute the right decisions that bring us the best possible outcome.

• Let’s maximize our potential

- We can capitalize on good luck cycles for entrepreneurial ventures or investment
decisions.
- We can reduce risk by being cautious and reducing our exposure during downward
cycles.
• Understanding relationships, understanding others

- People react and respond differently to different people in different time periods. By
understanding the cosmic relation between yourself and your family or partner, you can
foster better communication and improve relationships.
• Choosing the right career

- Knowing which type of career or industry is suitable for you could be a very important
step in your life. Why not choose a career where you can perform at your peak, where
you’d enjoy your work and where you can excel?
• Interacting with people around you

- BaZi allows us to understand the influence of people around you in your family or at
work. Undoubtedly, we are very much influenced by our group of friends and family. Who
is helpful and who is unknowingly impeding your progress?
人們總會對生命中的奧妙有著很多幻想。例如，有時候我
們會想，人生存在世的意義是什麼呢？長久以來，中國人
都在研究“生命的意義”，並且累積了不少的知識。
經過長時間的研究，中國人發展出了一套關於人，環境，
時間和宇宙（也稱為天）之間所有關係的獨特模式。這套
模式根據我們的出生時間，計算出宇宙能量對我們的週期
性影響。而這些資訊就隱藏在我們的八字密碼裡。所以，學
習和實踐八字計算，就能夠解開當中的密碼，進而了解我們的命運。
八字就像是一種用以了解病人病情的分析方法。而風水就是針對病情，給予最正確治
療的方法。通常，風水家也是八字專家。或者應該說，真正的風水家至少也應該專於
一種命理分析法，例如紫微斗數。
八字能夠將我們的命運展現在圖表上。（這八個字代表了我們的命。）在八字裡，每
十年為一個大運，而我們的命運就是從大運中計算出來的。
大運會影響我們的運氣。即使一個人的命好，也需要有好的運氣才能發揮他的潛能。
相反的，如果一個人的命八字不好，好的大運將有助於他的命運發展。但是，壞的大
運對一個命好的人影響並不會太大。
我們的命運道路是平坦或崎嶇，全看大運的好壞。每個柱中會有兩個字：天干和地
支。每個運主宰十年的運氣。

我們為什麼要研究命運呢？
• 一個了解自己命運的人，就能夠設計出適合長期使用的風水格
局。
• 對於命運預測的事情作出正確的決定
- 如果我們能夠預測什麼時候會行好運，什麼時候會行霉運，
我們就能根據最有利的條件作出最正確的決定。
• 全力開發個人的潛能
- 行好運時，在事業或投資上大膽地作出決定。
- 運氣不好時，能夠小心行事和減低風險。
• 了解人際關係
- 在不同的時間，人與人之間會有不同的接觸方式。了解你
和家人，夥伴之間的關係將有助於改善及加強你的溝通方
式。
• 選擇最有前途的事業
- 事業是人生重要的一環，你可以從命運預測中知道最適合你的行業，進而選擇
你最能表現，最享受以及最能大放異彩的事業。
• 了解身邊的人對你的影響
- 八字能夠令你了解身邊的人對你的影響。當然，影響我們最深的，一定是朋友
和家人。但，你可知道那一些人對你有幫助而那一些人會阻礙你的發展呢？

The Five Elements 五行
The theory of the Five Elements is the backbone

of all Chinese Metaphysical studies – Feng
Metal Shui, Astrology, Chinese Medicine and even
Martial Arts. I cannot overstate the importance
of grasping the Five Elements when it comes
Fire Wood to BaZi. The principle of the Five Elements
is the core science of decoding a person’s
Destiny Code.
It is supposed to be a translation of the

Chinese term Wu Xing, which means the
Earth Water
five transformations or five phases. The Five
Elements – Wood, Water, Fire, Earth, Metal –
are in fact the result of the interaction between
Yin and Yang Qi during the five different phases – they are transformations of Qi.
The Five Elements represent certain key attributes in a person’s chart. For example, Water
represents a person’s wisdom.
The Five Elements each have three distinctive reactive relationships with each other: a
Productive relationship, a Controlling relationship and a Weakening relationship. We refer to
these as the Productive Cycle, the Controlling Cycle and the Weakening Cycle.
所有的中華玄學，如風水，天星學，中醫術，甚至武術，都是以五行為骨幹的。
在八字學裡也一樣，五行的基本原則就是解開一個人的命運密碼的主要橋樑。

The productive cycle is a phase where the Elements support and
strengthen each other. In this phase, the relationship is supportive,
giving, attractive, pleasing and generous. This cycle is in harmony
and in constant movement. In the productive cycle, the elements
feed and support each other. The Qi flows smoothly.
Wood 生 Earth
相生關係就是說五行之間相互支持以及強化。五行相生代表了支 PRODUCTIVE
持，貢獻，吸引力，高興和大方的關係。這種協調的關係是常動
的，氣因此能夠順暢地流動。
Water Metal
Controlling Cycle 相克
At first glance, the word ‘controlling’ sounds negative. Many
newcomers to the subject of Five Elements tend to see ‘controlling’
as something unfavourable or despotic. This is far from the truth. In Fire
the context of the Five Elements, ‘controlling’ merely means to guide
and to keep in order. So remember, it is fine to ‘control’. Control
brings order and direction to an element. Thus it is always desirable
to have appropriate controlling element in your BaZi.
相克’總是給人負面的印象。尤其是五行的初學者，通常都會篤 Wood 剋 Earth

定’相克’就是不好的事情。其實，這是錯誤的觀念，’相克’ CONTROLLING

Weakening Cycle 洩秀
The third cycle is called the Weakening Cycle. Once again, do not
jump to conclusions about ‘Weakening’ being negative just because
it weakens. Remember, in BaZi we are striving for balance.When an Fire
element in the chart is excessively strong, it should be weakened to
a certain extent so that there is balance among the elements.
Weakening actually means an element has “produced” another

element. It is like a product or an invention. Energy is consumed to
generate something. Wood 洩 Earth
WEAKENING
五行間的第三種關係就是洩秀關係。千萬別有先入為主的觀念，
認為'洩秀'就一定是不好的。在八字中，我們追求的是平衡，因
此沒有所謂的好與不好，只有'適當'或'不適當'罷了。適當地刪
減一些有害的因素，使之不至於過度，是為平衡。但是，若某些 Water Metal
不利的因素被不恰當地增添，就會令之失去平衡。
打個比喻：當其中一種五行過強時，就有洩秀的必要，以減弱它
的力量來保持五行的平衡。
洩秀的意思就是讓五行中的一種元素'生'另外一種元素，前者因
此而消耗能量以及轉弱。

Understanding the BaZi Chart 瞭解八字命盤
A BaZi chart comprises of Four Pillars. Each pillar consists of two characters – one at the top,
one at the bottom. The top character is known as a Heavenly Stem (Tian Gan 天干) and the
bottom character is known as the Earthly Branch (Di Zhi 地支). To avoid confusion, don’t think
stem or branch – think Heavenly (as in above) and Earthly (as in below) to guide you as to which
is what.
A complete BaZi chart has four sets of characters – Four Heavenly Stems and Four Earthly
Branches.
八字命盤裡有四柱，每柱分上下各一個字。上面部分的字稱為天干，下面部分的字則稱
為地支。如果你覺得‘干’和‘支’有點混淆，那你不妨以‘天’和‘地’來區分這兩個部分吧。
一個完整的八字命盤有四對字，也就是四個天干與四個地支。

The BaZi Language 八字語言:
The Ten Heavenly Stems 天干
The Heavenly Stems are known as prevailing Qi or surface Qi. In the context of BaZi, the
Heavenly Stems represent external perceptions of a person – in other words, what a person
shows on the surface, in terms of character, personality or outlook. The Heavenly Stems
show characteristics, personality or outlook that everyone - friends, family, acquiantances
- can see and perceive.
天干也稱為透露出來的氣或象。在八字學中，天干代表了一個人的外部形象。因
此天干顯示的是這個人的特質，性格與外表，換句話說，就是所有讓其他人看得
見，感覺到以及透露出來了的事情。

Getting to Know the Ten Heavenly Stems 認十天干
A little pointer before we begin to learn more about the Ten Heavenly Stems. The study of BaZi is one that
requires a little bit of imaginative capability and a little bit of logical deduction. It is a right brain and left brain
study – you need to be able to ‘picture’ a BaZi (you’ll understand why in a minute) and see the elements in
pictorial form.
So as you go through this section, don’t just focus on the text. Remember also to try and get a mental picture
of the Ten Heavenly Stems as they are described to you. To help you along, I’ve included some pictures.
學習八字需要同時擁有豐富的想像力和邏輯思想。此外，你也必須同時使用左腦和右腦-也就是在

Wood should be visualised as a great big tree – think California
Redwoods, think teak trees, think towering solid oaks. These trees

Getting to Know the Ten Heavenly Stems 認十天干
戊 (pronounced ‘Woo’) Wu is Yang Earth and represents

How to Plot a BaZi Chart 如何排出一個八字命盤
The core component of a BaZi reading is the BaZi Natal Chart. The second component of a
BaZi reading are the Luck Pillars. These two components are derived from the Time and Date
of Birth of the individual. Here is an example of a BaZi Natal chart with its Luck Pillars. Please
take note of these terms as they will be used in the following explanation.

The top four characters of a BaZi chart are called Heavenly Stems (天干) and the four
characters below are called Earthly Branches (地支). These Eight Characters are paired to
form four pillars. This is why a BaZi is also known as Four Pillars. These Pillars are known
as the Year Pillar, the Month Pillar, the Day Pillar and the Hour Pillar.
八字命盤的上面部分的四個字稱為天干，下面部分的四個字則稱為地支。四對字組
成四柱，因此八字也稱為四柱命理。這四柱就是年柱、月柱、日柱與時柱。

First, you will need to have the relevant birth data to plot your BaZi chart. This would be
your date of birth (year, month and day), your time of birth and gender.
Here’s the check list:
1. Name:

3. Date of Birth: Day_____ Month_____ Year_____
4. Time of Birth:
Fill in the Western (Gregorian) birth details. The following section will show you how to
convert the data into the Chinese Solar equivalent.

Step 1 步驟一: Preparation 準備功夫

Draw the diagram above. This will provide you with guidance when filling in the BaZi
characters and ensure no mistakes are made. Each BaZi comprises of Four Pillars – a
Year Pillar, Month Pillar, Day Pillar and Hour Pillar. Using this diagram, fill in the birth data
so that you plot the chart sequentially and in a systematic manner. Write the Month in
numerical figures on top to help you remember the date you are plotting. (ie: February 20,
1967 at 4.30pm. )
先畫出以上的圖表，再有次序地將八字填寫在圖表的格子內。八字命盤分為年柱，
月柱，日柱與時柱，共四柱。將你的西歷出生日期寫在圖表之上，避免混淆。（如

Step 2 步驟二: Check the year 檢查年份

In the Western Gregorian calendar, a new year is celebrated on the 1st of January of
each year. The Chinese Xia calendar also has the same tradition of transiting each
year at the same date, which is February 4. Contrary to popular misconception, you
do not use the Chinese New Year as the transition date for each year. That is because
we do not use the Chinese Lunar calendar for BaZi. We only use the Chinese Solar
Calendar.
So, if a person is born on February 6, 2004 he or she is definitely born in the Year of
the Jia Shen 甲申(Wood Monkey). However, if he or she is born on February 3, 2004
then he or she is born in the Year of the Gui Wei癸未(Water Goat).
在西歷中，新年總是落在每年的1月1日。中華夏曆（陽曆）也有類似的情況，新
年落在2月4日。有一點必須注意的是，陽曆的新年並不是農曆新年。八字是根據
陽曆而行的，因此在八字中，農曆新年並不是年與年交替的第一天。
所以，如果一個人在2004年2月6日出生，那他就一定是出生在甲申年（木猴）
了。但是，如果一個人出生在2004年2月3日，計算他的八字時，他就是出生癸未
年了（水羊）。

Step 3 步驟三: Identify the Year Pillar 找出年柱

Once you have ascertained the correct year of birth, copy down the Year Pillar in the Year
Box of the Diagram.
Using our example of February 20, 1967 at 4.30pm, this person’s Year Pillar would be
Ding Wei 丁未 or Fire Goat. So, write Ding Wei 丁未 in the Year Pillar.
在找出正確的年份後，將它寫在八字命盤中的年柱。

The Chinese Xia calendar also has a monthly transition point. Although this date does
vary, it does not vary significantly, usually it is plus or minus a day. Use the table below
as a rough guide but always refer back to the actual Ten Thousand Year Calendar to be
sure.

For the purposes of plotting a complete BaZi chart, you need the Month Pillar of course. To get the complete
Month Pillar, with the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, you will need to refer to the Ten Thousand Year
Calendar.
Going back to our example of the person born 20 February 1967 - to get the month pillar, first, turn to the
page for the year 1967. If you are using the Joey Yap Ten Thousand Year Calendar, it is on page 284. (Note:
The page number is correct based on the 4th Reprint edition of the Ten Thousand Year Calendar.)
Now, from our little quick Monthly Transition Dates table above, we know that this person is born in Tiger
Month. But what is in the Heavenly Stem of this Month Pillar? Look down the columns till you find February
20. If you look at the top of the column, you will see the Month Pillar for that Month. It is Ren Yin 壬寅.
排命盤的其中一個步驟就是找出月柱的天干與地支。這時，你就需要使用萬年曆了。

Exceptional Circumstances
Early/Late Rat Hour
The Rat Hour (11 PM – 12:59 AM) theoretically saddles two days. Accordingly, the Rat Hour has TWO BaZi
characters – one for Early Rat Hour (12 AM – 12:59 AM) and one for the Late Rat Hour (11 PM – 11:59
PM).
A person is considered to have been born in the Early Rat Hour if they were born between 12 AM and 12:59
AM on June 16, 1976. They are considered to have been born in the Late Rat Hour if they were born between
11 PM and 11:59 PM on June 16, 1976.
For the Early Rat Hour, the method of plotting as explained above for the Hour Pillar applies.
For the Late Rat Hour, refer to the Late Rat Hour column reproduced below, the Five Rats Chasing Day
Establishing Hour Table. Using the Day Master, ascertain the correct BaZi characters for the Late Rat Hour.
Example: For a person born at 11:01 PM on June 16, with the Day Master Geng 庚, the Late Rat Hour is
Wu Zi 戊子.

• The Luck pillars always start from the furthermost right column.
• You need to determine if the Luck Pillars are plotted in a Forward or Reverse cycle. This would be based
on the Gender of the person as well as his/her Year of birth.
• Plot the Luck Pillars using the BaZi Natal Chart’s Month Pillar as the reference point.

Step 2 步驟二:
In order to plot the rest of the Luck Pillars you must then establish whether the Luck Pillars are a Forward
Cycle or a Reverse Cycle. This will determine the sequence of the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches as
they move from right to left. For the forward sequence, please refer to the chart below.

is Yin or Yang. For the polarity of the Heavenly Stems please refer to the chart. Then you
need to refer to the table below:

Calculating the age limits 如何計算‘起運歲數’
Now, the Luck Pillars, which tell us WHAT kind of luck a person is undergoing, are not much use unless we
know WHEN the years are good and when they are less favourable.
Therefore, the final step in plotting the dynamic aspect of a BaZi chart is to calculate the Age Limit.
The Age Limit marks of the blocks of Luck Pillars. Each Luck Pillar is a block of 10 years but what we need
to know is WHEN that block of 10 years starts and ends, which is the Age Limit.
Age Limits vary from person to person - they can range from 0-10 for each block. The most important piece
of information for calculating the Age Limit is the Day of Birth and whether the Luck Cycle is a Forward or
Reverse Cycle.
Now, here’s how we calculate the Age Limits
Step 1:
Determine if it is a Forward or Reverse Cycle.
Step 2:
Calculate the number of days between the Date of Birth and the nearest Forward or Reverse Monthly
Transition Date. Exclude from your calculation the day of birth.
Step 3:
Divide the number of days between the Date of Birth and the nearest Monthly Transition Date by 3.
現在你已經可以透過運柱看出自己將會行什麼樣的運了，但是，你可知道確實在什麼時候這
些所謂的‘好運’或‘厄運’會降臨在你身上嗎？
因此，下一步我將教你如何計算‘起運歲數’。‘起運歲數’是一個週期，它代表運的起點
及終點。每一個運柱是10年，而‘起運歲數’，就是清楚地顯示了這個運柱在那一年開始，
又在那一年結束。

Thousand Year Calendar. (Sometimes the transition date varies by a day, so to
be sure, check it up.)

is a Yang Male. Accordingly, his Luck Cycle is a Forward Luck
Cycle.

這位男士出生於木猴（甲申）年，因此他是陽男。順排

Step 2 步驟二:
Calculate the number of days between the Date of Birth and the nearest Forward or Reverse Monthly
Transition Date.
The number of days from May 15 and June 5, the nearest Monthly Transition Date going through the
FORWARD cycle is 22 days, counting from May 15th onwards.
找出和自己出生日期最相近的交節日
既然是順排，就找出下一個最相近的交節日，也就是6月5日。
Step 3 步驟三:
Divide the number of days between their Date of Birth and the nearest Monthly Transition
Date by 3.
22 divided by 3, which is 7.3. Round up 7.3 to the nearest number, which is 7. His Age
Limit starts from the age of 7. He will enter his first luck pillar at 7 years old. His next Luck
Pillar is 17 since Luck Pillars are in blocks of 10 years.
把出生日期和交節日相減，找出差異的天數，然後除於3。
從5月15日開始計算，一直到6月5日，天數的差異是22天。將22除於3，得到的結果是7.3，進位值
是7。
結論就是這位男士的‘起運歲數’，從7歲開始，每一個運柱的週期為十年，因此他的下一個運柱

We count the number of days from August 15th until September 8, the
nearest Monthly Transition Date going through the FORWARD cycle. The
difference is 25 Days.

Step 3 步驟三:
25 divide by 3 is 8.3, rounded off to the nearest number is 8. Accordingly, her
age limit starts with 8 and she enters her first luck pillar at 8 years old.
把出生日期和交節日相減，找出差異的天數，然後除於3。
從8月15日開始計算，一直到9月8日，天數的差異是25天。將25除於3
，得到的結果是8.3，進位值是8。
結論就是這位女士的‘起運歲數’，從8歲開始，每一個運柱的週期為
