Ecoren®
Econazole Nitrate

Description
Ecoren® Cream and Ecoren® VT is preparation of Econazole Nitrate. It is an imidazole
antifungal agent. It appears to alter fungal cell membranes resulting in defective function.

Indications
Ecoren® Cream: All fungal skin infections due to dermatophytes, yeasts, moulds and other
fungi. These include vulvo-vaginal candidiasis, candidal napkin rash and other candidal
infections, ringworm (tinea) infections, athlete’s foot, paronychia, pityriasis vesicolor and
balanatis. For the treatment of onchomysis, local therapy with Econazole cream, combined
with an oral antimycotic is recommended.

Dosage and Administration

Ecoren® Cream: It should be applied to skin lesions in the morning and evening. Treatment
should be continued for two weeks after the lesions have cleared. Ecoren® cream should be
applied to infected nails once daily and the nail should be covered with and occlusive
dressing. Nails should be clipped short at regular intervals and treatment continued
uninterrupted until the growth of new nails is established.
Ecoren® VT: It should be inserted high into the vagina at bedtime for three consecutive
nights. Patients should be instructed not to discontinue treatment upon relief of symptoms,
but to complete the prescribed course.

Directions for using the (Ecoren® VT) applicator

 Pull out plunger until it stops.
 Place a vaginal tablet in to the applicator.
 Insert applicator containing the tablet carefully as deeply as possible into the vagina
(best lying on your back).
 Push plunger until it stops, thereby depositing the tablet into the vagina.
 Remove the applicator.

Uses in pregnancy and lactation

There is no information of any abnormality or adverse event in neonates while Ecoren®
Cream/ Ecoren® VT had been used during pregnancy. As the systemic absorption of
Econazole Nitrate cream is extremely low after topical/vaginal use, excretion in breast milk
is likely to be negligible. So it can be used topically/vaginally during lactation if needed.

Side effect
Topical and intravaginal treatment with Econazole Nitrate can cause local transient and mild
irritation, itching & redness may occur immediately after application. Econazole has minimal
allergic effect. It is well tolerated, even by delicate skin.
Local irritations are not likely to occur, except in rare case, e.g., in eczematous skin areas.
In such cases, anitaczematous treatment is recommended for several days before therapy
with Econazole is initiated.

Contraindications
Econazole Nitrate is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any
component of the formulation.

Precautions
Hypersensitivity has rarely been recorded. If something like this occurs, administration of
this product should be discontinued. The infected area should be kept clean dry during
