1. Words to know

1. Philosophy – is a way to organize our experience into manageable sections. It is

a study that seeks to understand the mysteries of existence and reality.

2. Sociology – is a social science that seeks to study the society in relation to

human behavior. It is more interested in how the pressures exerted by society
influences our behavior.

3. Psychology – is a way of thinking of a common man. It is the prediction of a

person regarding any decision. It is the innermost feeling of a person developed
over a long period of time.

4. Anthropology- is the study of humanity and everything to do with humanity –

throughout time and across all cultures and ethnicities. It is the study of human
beings and how they interact with the world.

5. Protective Self- is serving or tending to protect oneself. This is characterized by

unwillingness to accept risk focus on avoiding outstandingly bad qualities,
avoidance of many strategic ploys and reluctance to draw attention to self.

6. Agentic Self – is the aspect of human personality that is determined by future

assessments of one’s goals, objectives, and actions.

7. Eastern Countries – these are the countries in Asia like India, Japan, china and
many other including Philippines. Eastern culture of the countries like India,
Japan and let of other ones, which have a lot of traditions and habits. They would
like to continue the old traditions and to not like to change them into something
new.

10. Perspective – it is a particular way of considering something, our thought, to

think about a situation or problem in a wise and reasonable way. To compare
something to other things so that it can be accurately and fairly judged.
2. BRUSH UP:

1. Are you an ideal self or a real self? Explain

- I think, I am a real self because I believe on what characteristic that posses. I
believe on the personality that I have capabilities that I pass and show to others.

2. Which among the following personalities in history do you agree most with
respect to the concept of the self? Choose one and support your answer. Then
place their pictures in the box.

Socrates- I believe in his philosophy

in his the importance of the notion
“knowing oneself”. For he died as a
martyr that fought against ignorance and
narrow mindedness. I believe on him
that men’s goal in life is to obtain
happiness.
Happiness motivates us to act towards
or avoiding things that could negative
effects in our lives as such, by fully
knowing oneself a person will be able to
achieve happiness.

b. Sociological perspective of self

Margaret Mead – I am in favor of his

perspective that is interactionism holds
the view that people are the ones who
exist, take action and behavior. All
societal structures are no more than
mere constructs created at the hands
and discretion of humans. According to
interactionists, society is in a constant
state of development. Interactionists are
most interested in how persons act
toward and respond to one another, as
well as the influence that each holds
over one another in society as a whole.

c. Psychological perspective of self

Sigmund Freud – I agree in his works,
especially in his structural model of
personality that divides into three parts –
the Id, the ego, the super ego. The id is
the unconscious part that is the cauldron
of raw drives, such as for sex or
aggression. The ego which has
conscious and unconscious elements is
the rational and reasonable part of
personality. The super ego is a person’s
conscience, which develops early in life
and is learned from parents, teachers,
and others. Like the ego, the super ego
has conscious and unconscious
elements.

d. Anthropological perspective of self

Ruth Fulton Benedict – I agree in her

works, especially in her “patterns of
culture” theory where understanding the
impact of culture on human behavior
and personality. I believe in concept of
cultural configuration, the idea that a
culture is not a random collection of
traits, but a unique patterning or
organization of these traits, has been a
major contribution to the worlds
understanding of cultural diversity.
IV .Individual Reflection Paper

Choose one topic in Part II and reflect on it. Write your reflection on a piece of bond
paper to be submitted to the teacher.

- Social Learning Theory –

In social learning theory, Albert Bandura agrees with the behaviorist
learning theories of classical conditioning and operant conditioning.
However, he adds two important ideas:
1. Mediating processes occur between stimuli and responses.
2. Behavior is learned from the environment through the process of
observational learning.

Children observe people around them behaving in various ways. This is illustrated
during the famous Bobo Doll experiment. Individuals that are observed are called
models. In society, children are surrounded by many influential models, such as parents
within the family, characters on children’s TV, friends within their peer group and
teachers at school. These models provide examples of behavior to observe and imitate,
like masculine and feminine, pro and anti-social, etc. Children pay attention to some of
these people / models and encode their behavior. They may imitate the behavior they
have observed. They may do this regardless of whether the behavior is gender
appropriate or not, but there are a number of processes that make it more likely that a
child will reproduce the behavior that its society deems appropriate for its gender.
V. Essay

I Understand Myself
Sometimes a person may feel that they have no purpose in life. Finding
out who you are just take time of sitting down and thinking of the importance in your life.
Who am I? I am Dante Francisco Santiago, and I am a person with different
personalities, characteristics, and identities. The many way, in which identity myself, in
fact, are the ways that define who I am. My identity is something only I can fully define. I
have two brothers and two sisters which makes me a brother; I have two senior citizen
parents which makes me a son; I have a stable job for 17 years that makes me a
hairstylist and a bread winner; I am in college studying BS Psychology which makes me
a student; I had teammates and coaches, which makes me a volleyball player and I
have wonderful friends in desperate need of support, which makes me a wonderful best
friend.

Before anything, I am the 4th of the siblings and working in a salon for 17
years up until now, and become a bread winner in the family since then. My parents are
a now senior citizen that’s why they won’t be able to work anymore. I live my life for
them and because of them.

Sometimes I feel like giving up on either school or work because at time,

it’s too hard and too much for me to deal both. Then, I think, what kind of role model
would I be if I quit. What kind of personal and what would be the purpose of my
sacrifices if I give up? And because of them, I truly understand now what would be my
purpose in life and now these things happened and given to me.

As a Hairstylist As a gay pride As a volleyball player

Reflection Figure:

1. Things I have learned is the self- perception, I’ve learned to myself how to
perceive and what is my purpose in life. How will I share this purpose to
the people surrounds me.

2. From this perception in life, things I have learned and appreciated is how
to be a good person to others. Also how to handle things and situations
even in a worst scenario.

3 things I have discovered:

- I am responsible to make myself happy. I should not be dependent on

others for my happiness
- Do whatever it takes to make your soul happy. To be happy is my top
priority
- Your time is now. Do whatever you can do now and you will not regret
