Organelles Worksheet

The mitochondrion has two membranes: an outer membrane and a convoluted inner
membrane. The infoldings of the inner membrane are called cristae. The inner membrane
divides the mitochondrion’s interior into two compartments: the intermembrane space (the
fluid-filled compartment between the two membranes) and the matrix found within the inner
membrane.
Like the mitochondria, chloroplasts have two membranes: the outer membrane and the inner
membrane. The intermembrane space exists between the two membranes. These two
membranes enclose additional membranes called thylakoids. The thylakoids are stacked into
‘poker chip’ stacks, called grana. The stroma is the fluid-filled compartment outside of all of the
thylakoids but inside the inner membrane. The thylakoid spaces are fluid-filled compartments
within the thylakoids.
Label the parts of a typical mitochondrion and chloroplast in the drawings below (Figure 6.12).
