Lesson 1: Photogrammetric Optics

Assignment 1

1. ____________________ is the art, science and technology of obtaining reliable

information about physical objects and the environment through processes of recording,
measuring, and interpreting photographic images and patterns of recorded radiant
electromagnetic energy and other phenomena.

Answer: Photogrammetry

2. What is the difference between metric photogrammetry and interpretative

photogrammetry?

Answer:

Metric photogrammetry refers to the use of measurements made on aerial photographs

to obtain quantitative data about the earth’s surface wherein the end product is a map of
a selected project area, or it is simply the process of making precise measurements from
photos, while interpretive photogrammetry is the process of recognizing and identifying
objects and judging their significance through careful and systematic analysis and the
product would be a map showing information such as the distribution of soil types,
vegetation species, land use, rock types, or other environmental factors.

3. Pick five (5) photogrammetry terms/ keywords and compose a paragraph explaining
their meaning or relate them with each other to make a whole concept in one paragraph.

Answer:

The term photogrammetry, as implied by its name means measuring of images on a

photograph or its principal source of information used are photographs. These
photographic images, patterns of recorded radiant electromagnetic energy which is an
energy that is transferred by electromagnetic radiation, and other phenomena are
recorded, measured and interpreted. This process involves instruments that are used in
a very necessary part. Among these devices is the Mapping Camera or Surveying
Camera which is an aerial or terrestrial camera. It is equipped with means for maintaining
and indicating the interior orientation of the photographs with sufficient accuracy for
surveying purposes. One of the most important part of an aerial camera is the lens. It is
one or more pieces of glass, or other transparent material, shaped to form an image of
an object by refraction or when a ray of light meets the surface of separation between
two transparent media, it is sharply bent or refracted. It is this property of refraction which
makes lens action possible. On entering a lens, light is refracted in such a manner as to
form either a real or a virtual image depending on whether a converging (positive) or a
diverging (negative) lens is used respectively.

4. How is optics relevant to photogrammetry? Rating 1 to 10 (1 as the least and 10 as the

most), how critical is the role of optics in photogrammetry and photographic image
capturing?

Answer:

Optics is essentially relevant to photogrammetry. Both terms are connected not only by
their Greek origin - photogrammetry came from “photos” meaning light, “gramma”
meaning that which is drawn or written, and “metron” meaning to measure; and optics
came from “optikes” originally meant the study of the eye and vision, now refers to the
study of all phenomena related to light; but also pertinent to their significance to one
another. Optics has an extensive role and application in photogrammetry and
photographic image capturing, with the rating 10 out of 10. In photogrammetry, especially
photogrammetric mapping, instruments such as cameras, particularly aerial cameras are
used in which its optical elements play a critical part in obtaining photographs from which
required data can be extracted. Similar to image capturing, when a photograph is taken
with a camera, optical elements such as light reflected from the object passes through
the shutter, diaphragm, and lens to form a real inverted image and for the brief period
during which the shutter is open, this image falls on the surface of a film or plate sensitized
by silver salts and causes an invisible latent image to be recorded on it.
