When thinking of refined elegance, bespoke designs and
sleek finishes, ANARCHITECT is the first design practice
to spring to mind. The brand, synonymous with innovative
modernist designs, continues to take the architecture and
interior world be storm and there are no signs they’re slowing
down. Jonathan Ashmore and his team have yet again amazed
with their award-winning Dubai Hills Villa. The impressive
3,000sqm family home sits in Dubai’s newest upscale
neighbourhood, Dubai Hills. With a panoramic backdrop of
the city’s signature skyline and overlooking a highly regarded
golf course, Jonathan applied ‘modernist principles to create
a family home in the practice’s signature style of refined
spatial interventions, high-quality natural material palette,
and pristine detailing.’ We had the chance to sit down with
Jonathan to delve into the project that won ANARCHITECT
the Residential Interior Design of the Year prize at the

How did you incorporate modernist principles throughout
the architectural design and interiors?
By creating a focal gallery entrance we provided a clean
perpendicular connection to the main living space and formal
entertainment space, that spans the full width of the rear of the
property with views over the swimming pool, garden and 18th hole
of the gold course beyond. The pure mass and scale of the stone
walls and the precision of the glazed openings plays a balance
of solid and transparency in the central space, whilst also framing
views and providing points of orientation throughout the home.
The modernist courtyard intervention also draws in abundant
natural daylight deep into the floor plate. The material thresholds,
details and junctions throughout the residence are further defined
by precise horizontal and vertical shadow gaps or precise stainless
steel insertions that play a key part in the perception of straight,
clean modernist lines.

With a strong drive to fuse innovative design with traditional techniques,

Creative Director and Designer, Jehanara Knowles, placed this passion at
the forefront when creating interiors and furniture brand Kam Ce Kam.
Taking inspiration from a childhood spent between New Delhi and London,
Jehanara’s furniture and interiors brand finds beauty in simplicity, creating
pieces with a strong emphasis on the purity of materiality. Jehanara has
made a conscious effort to predominantly employ sustainably sourced and
natural materials, using timber, leather, cane and stone as the main materials
throughout the collection. Kam Ce Kam’s launch during London Design Festival
2019 was, unsurprisingly, a success and the company was quickly marked
as one to watch. Speaking to Jehanara a few months after her launch,
she divulged all there is to know about her brand, the impact of her upbringing
on her creative inspiration and what she believes the future holds for design.

into a full-time business?
After a year of developing my ceramics skills during evening

a very impulsive decision but one which made me very happy.

MODERN BAUHAUS
Yael Siso
for The Levee

Hailing from Belgium and now based in Israel, Yael Siso has been a breath of fresh air on the boutique interior
design scene. Based in the architectural and business centre of Tel Aviv, her years of experience working for
luxury clients and businesses has resulted in an incredible and noteworthy portfolio. Incorporating European
elements and influence throughout her projects, her minimalistic style paired with nature-oriented materials
creates clean-cut and sleek spaces every time. Her role in Tel Aviv’s latest hospitality venture The Levee is
no exception. Comprising of eight loft-like interiors in a UNESCO World Heritage protected Bauhaus building,
originally built in 1913, Yael’s signature style exudes from each apartment and offers a bespoke short-stay
experience. Yael took the time to tell us about how her background influences her aesthetic, how she took on
the role as interior designer for The Levee and what the future holds for interior design in Israel.

53
Interior Design Modern Bauhaus

Yael, you have an incredibly interesting background, can you elaborate on how
you originally got into interior design?
I always felt that spaces have an effect on my mood and the energy on me and the people around
me. Without looking deeply into it, I started studying business, but quickly understood that this wasn’t
my true passion. I’m passionate about how a change in space not only has a physical influence but
a psychological influence as well. The combination of design, psychology and the interactions of both
with people is essentially what drives me most.

What led you to open your own interior design studio?

Having the freedom to find the balance of my own style and my client’s needs is what led me to open
my own studio. I believe there was a space for more European design aesthetic in Israel. By combining
my European background with Israeli studies and experience, I was able to attract international
projects and clients.

What can you tell us about The Levee?

The concept of The Levee is a new hospitality venture designed to accommodate international tourists
by providing a home-away-from-home feeling. These clients enjoy deliberate simplicity and the finer
things in life and therefore I was influenced by international residential projects rather than hotels.
We decided to use loft-like interiors as a common theme amongst all of the apartments, creating
an interesting contrast between old and new throughout the whole building. The apartments are
distinguished by their high ceilings, a rarity in the heart of Tel Aviv.

What design aesthetic did you aim to present in each apartment?

Before starting the design process, it was important for me to feel the space and see what aesthetic
would fit the most within each zone. We quickly noticed that the ground floor had a more laid-back vibe,
the first floor had a more classic feel with the original walls and the other floors were more modern.
As each floor was different, I decided to divide it into eight apartments, each having their signature
features and sources of inspiration.

How do the refurbished and industrial-like interiors complement the historic exterior?
The walls and ceilings are comprised of untreated cement that gives it an industrial touch that also
feels genuine by way of being exposed. In some places, the original 100 year old concrete, made using
sand sourced from the Tel Aviv shores, surprises the viewer with pieces of seashells that can be found
within it. To accompany this organic feel, I chose warm wooden floors that highlight the roughness,
texture and authenticity  of the natural material and its own history. To balance this, minimalist lighting
was selected to contour the apartment lines, accentuating its geometric shapes. The mix between
old and new tells the story of our eclectic Tel Aviv.

Can you talk about the materials you were drawn to use throughout the apartments?
First of all, it was incredibly important for me to leave the original walls. I was also drawn to
the concrete ceiling and so we decided to leave them bare. To balance these industrial and rough
materials I wanted to incorporate modern and Art Deco-inspired finishes and furnishings. The concept
of The Levee is to accommodate international tourists, therefore for furnishings I selected pieces from
international designers that represent the lively and global city that Tel Aviv is. These include Minotti,
Molteni, Cassina, Moroso and Bonaldo, to name a few.

How does The Levee reflect Tel Aviv’s rich history?

Tel Aviv is known as an eclectic and cosmopolitan city with different styles and cultures.
The interior design connects with the original structure, its surroundings and allows for visitors to
connect with themselves and experience ultimate relaxation amid the hustle and bustle of city life.
Each apartment has its own personality and style, just like the diversity of Tel Aviv.

NORDIC APPROACH
BIG for Noma
Architecture firm BIG are known for constantly exploring the
architectural field in refreshing, nuanced ways and moving into
a ‘pragmatic utopian architecture that steers clear of the petrifying
pragmatism of boring boxes and the naïve utopian ideas of digital
formalism.’ Led by 17 partners, each project is an undertaking to turn
a space into a visually intriguing and inspiring environment. One recent
project caught our eye: their redesign of Danish Michelin star restaurant
Noma into a one of a kind culinary countryside experience.
Set between two lakes within the freetown
community of Christiana, which used to be an
ex-military warehouse where mines for the Royal
Danish Navy were stored has been completely
transformed into a stunning gastronomy journey
that will define Noma’s unique approach to dining
for years to come. BIG asserts that ‘central to the
design was the idea of dissolving the restaurant’s
individual functions and organising them into
a collection of separate yet connected buildings.
A total of 11 spaces – each tailored to their specific
needs and built of the finest materials best suited
for their functions – are densely clustered around
the restaurant’s heart, the kitchen. ‘Preserving
the site’s landmark status, the various spaces are
connected seamlessly by glass-covered paths to
allow both staff and guests to easily move between
the zones and experience the weather and seasons
throughout the year, a vital part of Noma’s culinary
experience where the menu changes seasonally.

The kitchen’s central position changes the

gastronomy game entirely. Revolving around the
chefs, their place in the heart of the restaurant
means they have a complete overview whilst also
allowing guests to immerse themselves in an
experience that usually takes place behind the
scenes. Every details in the dining room evokes
architectural brilliance; from the batten timber
vaulted ceiling to the skylight and expansive
windows that reveal an outdoor permagarden
that blends interior and exterior beautifully.

The restaurant’s open floorplan allows guests

to enjoy the site’s nature-oriented surroundings
and heritage, whilst feeling protected in a cosy
and laid-back aesthetic. The interiors, designed
by Studio David Thulstrap, feature oak tables
and chairs, hand-woven cord seats and wooden
beams, capturing the environment and superbly
translating it within. Known for its reinterpretation
of Nordic cuisine and local Scandinavian food,
Noma has continued to impress critics and visitors

around the world since its opening in 2003. This

latest instalment in Christiana creates an entirely
