The report discusses calculations for pipe wall thickness, span length, and pipe stress analysis for an FRP pipe with an internal diameter of 152mm.

The pipe is made of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP).

The pipe wall thickness was calculated based on internal pressure of 1000kPa and external load from gravel and media above the pipe.

Project: Olefins Reconfiguration Project (TTCL)

Item No: SPP-85605, SPP-85606

Calculation Topic
1. Pipe Wall Thickness Calculation from following conditions
1.1. Internal Pressure
1.2. External Load
2. Span Length Calculation
3. Pipe Stress Analysis from software simulation

Vendor: GRE Composites co. ltd

Manufacturer: Thai Composites co. ltd

1. Pipe Wall Thickness Calculation
Pipe Data

Material FRP
Nominal Diameter 150 mm (6”)
Outside Diameter 160 mm
Inside Diameter 152 mm
Thickness of liner, Tl 0.5
Reinforced thickness, Tr 3.5 mm
Total Pipe Thickness, Tt
Tt = Tr+Tl 3.5 + 0.5 = 4 mm

Specific Gravity 1.8 g / cm3

Hoop Tensile Stress 100 MPa (100,000 kPa)
Pipe Stiffness ,PS 496 kPa

Conditions

Fluid Type Air

Internal Pressure 1,000 kPa (10 bar)
Assume pressure in static condition

1.1 Pipe Thickness by Internal Pressure Condition

Ref: ASTM D2992

Therefore,
(100,000) = (1,000) (160 – tr)/2tr

tr = 0.796 mm

Check compliance
tr = 0.796 mm < 3.5 mm  This thickness is ACCEPTABLE
1.2 Pipe Thickness by External Pressure Condition

Ref: ASTM D 2412

Conditions
External Load over the pipe
- Gravel (Density 2400 kg/m3) 300 mm height (from the bottom trench)
o Volume of Gravel = (0.025147 m2) * (1 m)

= 0.025147 m3

o Mass of gravel per 1 m length = 60.353 kg/m-length

- Media (Density 970 kg/m^3) 1000 mm height

o Volume of media = (1000) * (1000) * (160) = 0.16 m3
o Mass of media per 1 m length = 155.2 kg/m-length

Focus on 1 m length, the total load above the pipe = 60.353 + 155.2 = 215.553 kg/m-length

From

So,

Defection from external load, ∆y = (215.553)(9.81) / (496*1000) = 4.26 mm

From the allowable defection of pipe (recommended by manufacturer) = 5% of internal diameter

= (0.05*152) = 7.6 mm

Therefore, ∆y < = 5% of internal diameter  This thickness is ACCEPTABLE

2. Span Length Calculation
Ref: AWWA M45

Calculation deflection Type IV. Pipe analyzed as a beam fixed at both ends—uniformly distributed
loads.

Ls = unsupported span length, m

dm = allowable midpoint deflection, in. (12.5 mm. is typical for fiberglass)

Eb = Elastic Modulus of pipe 6900 x 106 N/m2 (Pa)

ID = Inside Diameter, m 152 x 10-3 m
OD = Outside Diameter, m 160 x 10-3 m
I = (π/64)(OD⁴ -ID⁴ ), m4 5.967 x 10-6 m4
W = total load (pipe + above the pipe) (215.553 + 3.528)*(9.81) N/m
= 2149.185

Ls = { [ (12.5*10-3)(6900*106)(5.967*10-6) ] / [ (0.0026)(2149.185) ] }0.25 = 3.098 m

Therefore, the recommend unsupported span length should be less than 3.098 m
3. Pipe Stress Analysis
Assume the worst case (No ground support under the pipe)

- Select 3 supports span length = 3000 mm

- Area of support = 300 mm each

- Applied the load = 2149.185 N/m or 21491.85 N (total) along the pipeline
Result

- At the critical point shows that the maximum stress is 48.275 MPa which is acceptable ( < 55
MPa)
