Selection of Erection Technologies For Cable Stayed Bridges in The Aspect of Further Behaviour During Exploitation

The document discusses selection of erection technologies for a cable stayed bridge being built in Wrocław, Poland. It analyzes using a longitudinal launching construction method instead of the originally planned cantilever method. The longitudinal method would require adjustments to the design, construction schedule, and analysis of strain on the bridge. Verification through modeling and calculations showed the longitudinal method is reasonable and feasible for this project in terms of cost and technical feasibility.

Selection of erection technologies for cable stayed bridges

in the aspect of further behaviour during exploitation

The case study for the considered problem was verified on the example of a cable stayed bridge in
Wrocław. The bridge will become a part of Highway Ring Road of Wrocław.

Specification of the bridge

The cable stayed bridge across the Odra River in Wrocław is the major part of the river crossing
with its total length of 1742.00 m and consist of: the left-bank access flyover (610.00 m), the main
bridge (612.00 m) and the right-bank access flyover (512.00 m).

The superstructure of the main bridge consist two separate prestressed box girders suspended from
the H-shaped concrete pylon. The high of girders is 2.50 m, span lengths are:
50.00+2×256.00+50.00 m. Structures of decks and pylon will be made of the concrete C50/60.

Objective of the study

The initial design of the main bridge assumed that the bridge deck will be made partly with
cantilever method and partly on scaffolds. The alternative longitudinal launching construction
method of decks has never been considered in the construction plans. It was necessary to verify
whether such a longitudinal launching method is feasible and cost effective. The overall study was
aimed at the following objectives:
1. Verify correctness of the assumed design solutions,
2. Define indispensable alterations that must be made for application of the new method of the
bridge construction,
3. Evaluate effect of the newly adopted construction technology on strain of the main bridge
during exploitation.

Character of the new method for bridge erection

Selection of the longitudinal launching method imposes substantial technological alterations in
contrary to the cantilever method. Successful completion of the entire operation depends on
selection of the most appropriate track for launching decks. It is the criterion that enforces
amendments in presumptions and makes to take account for factors that had been neglected on early
design stages, these are:
- not limited to inability to predict “programme” internal forces in the deck structures,
- the need to execute two-stage pretensioning of the structure (initial one and the final one),
- geometry of the decks must be maintained on subsequent stages of construction.

The adopted construction schedule significantly affects any further analysis, so a new schedule had
to be developed for the alternative longitudinal launching method. In addition, the suspension
system had to be adapted to another effort strain of the main bridge.

Verification of the construction
Verification of the construction was carried out on the basis of the Polish standards and
international guidelines. Another part of the study was the need to reflect concurrent action and
mutual relationships between various types of loads.
The verification process was carried out with use of calculation algorithms based on
numerical techniques, with use of the finite element method (FEM). All the calculation procedures
have been verified for 3D bar models.

Conclusions

The suggested of longitudinal launching method, being the alternative to the cantilever
method, has proved to be reasonable and feasible, both in terms of cost effectiveness and technical
availability for the analyzed case study in question.
