COURSE OVERVIEW & GOALS ////

The objective for beginners (A1) is to reach beginners level A2 at the end of the 2nd semester. According to
the official Council of Europe website (www.coe.int), it means that at this stage, the student can understand
sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic
personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). The student can communicate in
simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine
matters. He/She can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and
matters in areas of immediate need.

The student can use simple everyday polite forms of greeting and address; greet people, ask how they are and
react to news; handle very short social exchanges; ask and answer questions about what they do at
work/university and in free time; make and respond to invitations; discuss what to do, where to go and make
arrangements to meet; make and accept offers. Through role-plays or other situations (in order to be prepared
to be in a francophone environment), he student can also make simple transactions in shops, post offices or
banks; get simple information about travel; use public transportation: ask for basic information, ask and give
directions, and buy tickets; ask for and provide everyday goods and services.
