Author Notes
“Apostles and Evangelists” & “Those Called by Christ”
Those who daily celebrate the Eucharist and Liturgy of the Hours need hymns for feasts, and both
of these hymns were written first of all for those daily celebrations.
The two basic hymns allow an assembly to learn a small amount of music, and the many verses
allow the music to be used for many feasts. The settings by Randall DeBruyn and Craig Kingsbury
take these hymns to a new level of celebration, and at least two possibilities present themselves.
First, these hymns could be used to celebrate the patronal feast day of a parish. In Europe, the feast
of the patron, which often coincided with the dedication of the church, was traditionally marked
with a great celebration both inside and outside the church called “Kermesse” (Church-Mass).
w
One of the hymns might also be used as a kind of “alma mater” which is sung at important parish
events with the appropriate patronal verse.
Secondly, the basic hymn (without special verses) could be used to mark events of call and
discipleship: e.g. baptism, confirmation, the beginning and end of the school year or of religious
education, etc.
ie
“Your Praise, O Lord”
Te Deum Brevis (The Short Te Deum)
ev
The Te Deum is a very early hymn, mentioned already in the Rule of St. Benedict (c. 530 A.D.).
In Benedictine monasteries, it was common to sing the Te Deum on Sundays before or after
reading the Gospel at vigils. During a visit to Blue Cloud Abbey, in South Dakota, which still uses
it each Sunday, Abbot Thomas asked for a short English version of this rather long hymn. The
Latin word for “short, brief” is “brevis”—thus the name: Te Deum Brevis—the “Short Te Deum.”
Still this hymn rather faithfully condenses the first part of that text celebrating the Trinity.
Traditionally the Te Deum is sung on occasions of great joy and thanksgiving: the end of war, the
Pr
election of a pope, the visit of a great person, such as the bishop. As a result, many famous
composers (Vivaldi, Mozart, Verdi, et al.) have settings for this text. Father Tobias’ tune captures
the joyous shout of this confession, and Craig Kingsbury uses trumpets to emphasize the joy.
This arrangement of the Te Deum could be sung to mark a special event in the life of a parish
community or to add a note of praise which is always appropriate.
