– Pull off retaining clip for coolant hose (bottom) -arrow- and re‐
move coolant hose from radiator.

– Detach air intake hose going to charge air cooler at lock carrier
(bottom left) -arrow-.
– Detach turbocharger air intake hose at lock carrier (bottom
right).
Vehicles with automatic gearbox:
Note
– Place used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782- un‐
der engine.
– Disconnect ATF pipes at connection point.
– Unbolt bracket for ATF pipe at engine.
All models:
– Unplug electrical connector (green) -arrow- for magnetic
clutch of air conditioner compressor at lock carrier (bottom
right) and move electrical wire clear.

– Remove air intake hose from charge air cooler -arrow-.
– Unscrew bolts -arrows- and take off cover for electronics box
in plenum chamber.

– Pull off fuse.
– Release fuse holder at additional relay carrier and pull off from
above.
– Release electrical contact in chamber 2 with removing tool -
VAS 1978/8- and remove.
– Unplug electrical connectors at rear of connector console.

– Slacken nut -arrow- and remove fuel filter from bracket (fuel
hoses remain connected).

❑ After removing compressor from mountings, secure it to longitudinal member with wire or similar. Do not
leave it suspended from refrigerant pipes.
❑ Do not unscrew or disconnect refrigerant hoses or pipes.

– Counterhold viscous fan pulley using 2-hole pin wrench -3212-
and unbolt viscous fan from bearing with an 8 mm hexagon
key.
– Detach viscous fan from bearing and lay it forwards in radiator
cowl.

– Place drip tray -V.A.G 1306- or drip tray for workshop hoist -
VAS 6208- under engine.
– Drain off coolant ⇒ page 113 .
– Unscrew bolts -1 ... 5-.
– Disconnect both coolant hoses -arrows- at rear of bracket.
– Remove bracket for ancillaries.
Installing
Installation is carried out in the reverse order; note the following:

♦ Renew O-ring.
♦ When installing, pay attention to dowel sleeve at top right be‐
tween bracket and cylinder block.
♦ Fit all cable ties in the original position when installing.
16 - Crankshaft sprocket

Test sequence
– Detach vacuum hose at mechanical exhaust gas recirculation
valve.
– Connect hand vacuum pump -V.A.G 1390- to valve.
– Create vacuum with hand-operated vacuum pump.
• The diaphragm rod must move in direction of vacuum con‐
nection.

Test requirement
• Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -
VAS 5051 A- with diagnosis lead -VAS 5051/1- is connected;
vehicle self-diagnosis and vehicle system “01 - Engine elec‐
tronics” is selected. Engine must be idling.
• Coolant temperature at least 80 °C.
Test sequence
Display on -VAS 5051 A- :
– From the selection menu -1- select diagnostic function “04 -
Basic setting”.

Checking activation
• Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -
VAS 5051 A- with diagnosis lead -VAS 5051/1- is connected;
vehicle self-diagnosis and vehicle system “01 - Engine elec‐
tronics” is selected. When doing this, the ignition must be
switched on.
– Connect voltage tester -V.A.G 1527 B- between contacts -1-
and -2-.
Note
– Press the ← key to exit from function “03 - Final control diag‐
nosis”.
– Press “06 - End output”.
– Switch off ignition.
If LED does not react as described:
Vehicles to 06.1999:
– Connect test box -V.A.G 1598/22- to connectors of wiring har‐
ness; do not connect engine control unit. Connect earth clip of
test box to earth (not shown in illustration) ⇒ Rep. Gr. 23 .
Caution
– Check for open circuit and short to positive or earth in the fol‐
lowing wiring:
