Grade 7 Music 1ST QUARTER

Module 1 :Music of Luzon (Highlands and Lowlands)

Fourth Week: 4th Week– Music of Luzon Lowland
(Liturgy and Devotional Music)

OVERVIEW

The lesson is an overview on the music of the Lowlands of Luzon, particularly on the Music for
Liturgy and Devotional Music. Through the lesson, one will discover how the people of the Lowlands
of Luzon express their feelings towards each other and the environment, their history, and their
religious beliefs through the medium of voice and musical instruments. A group performance inspired
by the Lowlands’ musical examples will culminate the educational experience.

The Mass

The religious orders placed great importance on music thinking music was a very powerful
vehicle to make the people understand and accept Christian ways and beliefs.

The Roman catholic churches in the Philippines adopted western musical norms and ideals.
With the Filipinos embracing the new religion, they combined folk traditions and practices into
Catholic rituals and celebrations, many of which are still practiced today.

Pastores

During advent at the start of the liturgical year, Tagalog carolers go singing from house to
house through town streets. This traditional practice was called pastores in Bicol. Young adults
practice this during Christmas time singing for alms. Today, it is still being practiced by kids and
adults adding color to the celebration of the birth of Jesus, Christ, the Christmas season.

Senakulo
A stage drama of the Passion of Christ presented during Holy Week. Actors are dressed and
act like the faithful and Roman soldiers playing specific roles in life, sacrifice, sufferings, death and
resurrection of Jesus Christ. In some parts, messages are sung and music is always present and is
usually rendered by a band.

Pabasa
The pabasa or chanting of the pasyon is a narrative verse of the life and passion of jesus Christ.
This verse is based on the Bible and is practiced every Holy Week.

The verse consists of five lines in every stanza. In each stanza you will find eight syllables.
Pasyon is sung by chanting the verses using traditional tones. If you will listen closely, you will notice
that most basic melodies are sung in unison and resemble plain chant. You will also notice that the
vocal quality is tense with a raised palate.

A high-pitched and penetrating type of voice is much preferred. The usual practice is to weave
ornaments-slow tremolos. Elaborate application of ornaments , along with the unpopular vocal quality,
makes the pabasa unique and colorful. The style also connotes pre- Spanish tradition.

In different provinces of Luzon they follow different style. In Rizal they use tha pananawagan
style. It has a slow tempo and fast style.
Nowadays during pabasa, you will also hear modern version using different melodies and styles
in chanting the verse.
During Holy Week, pasyon is sung by groups of singers. They sing each stanza alternately.
Pasyon should be sung continuously and finished within 18- 30 hours. This practice of pasyon
chanting/ singing has been passed on from one generation to another.

Salubong

Easter Sunday has a celebration known as salubong which begins with separate processions of
veiled Mater Dolorosa and the Risen Christ. The processions win up in the churchyard, where the
meeting of the Virgin Mary and Christ is then dramatized.
Santacruzan

Santacruzan is a procession of character included in the search for the Santa Cruz. This festival
celebrated in May is an expression of devotion to the Holy Cross. It is highlighted with Queen Helena
escorted by son, Emperor Constantine, finding the true cross of Jesus.

Komedya

Komedya is a musical drama showing the conflict between the Christians and moro. Oftentimes
a small band supplies the music for every part of the play. The band sounds off music that cater to
each scene such as fight scenes and duels. They also provide music entrances and exits for
enhancement.

Flore de Mayo

Flowers of may or Flores de Mayo as we call the festival is celebrated in May. This month, most
flowers are in bloom. In adoration, flowers are offered along with singing of hymns and songs to the
Blessed Virgin Mary.
