1. What are the reasons why we need to study social studies?

Social studies is one are in education where content integration is key. One of the reason why
we need to study social studies is to become better learners using analysis, critical thinking and
writing to show understanding. Also it help student to understand history, political science,
culture and all humanities and the importance to be a good citizen. Students should learn about,
understand, and appreciate cultural differences to have meaningful interactions with people of
all backgrounds in the future. The crucial part of social studies is economics, students or young
people need to understand their financial decisions that may have impact to their future as well
as the future of society. Students should engage their self into political skills by analyzing and
evaluating existing systems and imaging the future of the place in which they live. Lastly,
students must be aware and respect history itself, in order to have an appreciation for and
understanding of the way the world works.

2. Discuss your answers with your groups and find out what you are similar and different.

3. Of all the purposes of Social Studies education which do you think is the most important.

For me, the most important purpose of social studies education is social understanding (i.e.,
knowledge of human societies) because it explains the individual differences that help us to
avoid judgment. Feeling socially connected, especially in an increasingly isolated word.

4. Give the sub goals of Social Studies. Arrange according to your preference and important and
explain.

Sub-goals of Social Studies

 Knowledge
 Skills
 Attitudes
 Values

According to my preference from least to greatest:

 Knowledge
For me knowledge is the least important. Knowledge is just you’re a learning
concepts, principles and information, understand to something. When learning
social studies, knowledge is
 Skills
My second to the least important is skills, the more skilled the more expert you
are in the thing you do. Not through academic discussion, but through trying
and failing so many times that you know how to do it better than any theorist
could work out for you.

 Attitude
Attitudes can’t be taught but skills and knowledge can. A people have a right
attitude they are both motivated and adaptable which makes them more open
to learning more skills. You have the control any point in time, no matter the
circumstances you are facing. In fact, learning to adjust attitude is the first step
in self-leadership: you lead your frame and mind before anything else.

 Value
The greatest important for me is values, decides what we think as for right,
wrong, good or unjust. It derived from social and cultural mores. It helps to
guide our behavior. Being part of social studies education, we need to guide our
actions and judgment across objects and situations.

5. Give the typical attitudes and values use in the curriculum.

Typical attitudes and values used in the curriculum guide

1. Being committed to the public values of this society as suggested in its historical documents,
laws, court decisions, and oaths (e.g., from the Declaration of Independence, “all men are
created equal”; from the Pledge of Allegiance, “liberty and justice for all”)
2. Being able to deal fairly and effectively with value conflicts that arise when making decisions
about the common good (public policy)
3. Developing a reasoned loyalty to this nation and its form of government. (Note that the
Pledge Allegiance is made not to a person, but to a form of government: a “republic”; that
is, a constitutional democracy)
4. Developing a feeling of kinship to human beings everywhere—to the human family.
5. Taking responsibility for one’s actions and fulfilling one’s obligations to the community
6. What are the 5 foundation of Social Studies? Which do you think if the most important?
Explain.

Foundation of Social Studies

1. History – a study of the past with the help of written records and artifacts
2. Government – a group of people who have the power to make and enforce laws for a
country or area.
3. Economics – study of how people manage resources by producing, using, and
exchanging goods and services.
4. Culture – beliefs, customs, laws, art, and ways of living that a group of people share.
5. Geography – the study of all the physical features of the earth’s surface including its
climate and the distribution of plant, animal, and human life.

For me the most important foundation of Social Studies is government.

Reasons why we need to study and the importance of Government.

1. To understand the influence government has on your daily life.

2. To understand why the government produces the policies it does.
3. To understand and interpret current events in a rapidly changing world.
4. To understand how the United States attempts to resolve conflicts and seeks to
establish order and security.
5. To develop the ability to solve problems and make good decisions when current events
and economic and social issues affect you directly.
6. To apply your understanding when voting, petitioning, and speaking publicly.
7. To deal with the government effectively in your future profession.
8. To prepare for a career that requires a strong knowledge of government.
9. To use your understanding of government to participate and bring about change in your
community or country.
10. To contribute to the success of a democracy that depends on your understanding and
active participation.

Importance of Government

The police force and Law courts carry out this function of protecting lives and property

to its citizens.
This is why some countries pay unemployment allowance to the citizens for whom
government failed to provide gainful employment.
i) To administer justice: Government is the duty of Law Court which is an arm of
government to settle disputes and administer justice.
That is why prisons are established to punish the offenders and criminals.
