Module 1: Part l- Church: Preliminaries

I. Introduction:

A study of the history of the people of God can lead us into a deeper
appreciation of the Church today, now this Church is systematized and
structured one, but it has not always been like that. It is a result of a long
process and struggles of the people of God in the Old testament. God has
always been intervening in their lives by calling out people to be
instruments in saving them.

Despite their unfaithfulness, God remained faithful to them

This first module will then help us review Religious Education 1


(Salvation History) and Religious Education 2 (Christology), eventually this
will guide us in discovering the very reason why God in the Old Testament
convoked an assembly (Church).

ll. Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the session, the students are expected to:

1. Have a deeper appreciation of God’s unfathomable effort of


reconciling creation back to Him.

2. Allow God to intervene in their daily lives.

3. Pray as one assembly convoked by God.

4. Show commitment to the will of God by living truthfully as member


of the community.

lll. Learning Activity:

Brainstorming on the common understanding of “Church”

- What comes to your mind when speaking of the term Church?

- Describe the Church that you know?


- What is the reason why does a Church exist?

lV. Abstraction/Deepening

Definition:

1.1 Common Problems in entertaining the Church


- For most Filipinos, the Church is very familiar, perhaps in a sense
“too familiar.”
- For some, “Church” simply means the building where people go to
pray.
- For many, “Church” spontaneously evokes the image of bishops,
priests and religious or particular organizations.

1.2 Using the term Qhl alone would t only means = assembly
Association
Gathering
Organization
Adding the term YHWH would make God the object of gathering.
Qhl YHWH then could be an association or gathering of the people of God
centered on God.
* Church is an assembly convoked by God.

1.3 Why did God convoke an assembly?


Context:
· Creation (Paradise) and Fall (Sin); in a situation of alienation God
wants the human community (and the rest of creation) to be reconciled
with Him….
· Announced by the Prophets in Old Testament
· Personally, proclaimed by Jesus in the fullness of time…
·
V. Application:
Create a hashtag that will promote and enhance the value of reconciliation in
your family. Be sure to post it in a visible area where every member of your
family could
read and be reminded of. Just allow it posted for a week and observe reactions,
emotions and actions of the members of your family. Take note Hashtag
should
promote positive relationships at home.
Then after a week take a photo of it and submit it in our google classroom
together with your observations and reflection.
