Jose Rizal's secret mission was to closely observe the life and culture, languages and
customs, industries and commerce, and government and laws of the European nations. His older
brother, Paciano approved this mission of Jose Rizal. The purpose is said to be for preparation
for liberating the Philippines from Spain’s tyrannical rule.
He fulfilled his mission because he was able to go back prepared with his mighty task
which is to liberate his oppressed people from the tyranny of the Spanish and although he
encountered various difficulties he still managed to complete his studies and observe the way
European people live. He was able to write different articles and revised, finished and published
the sequel of Noli Me Tangere which is the El Filibusterismo and with his European tour
completed, Rizal made his way to Hong Kong to practice ophthalmology. There, he fulfilled his
primary mission to operate on his mother’s eyes.
When he returned to Philippines in 1892 he established a civic revolutionary group in La
Liga Filipina, It is made up of people who want to end the oppression of the Spaniards against
the Filipinos. This initiated the nationalization of the Filipinos. Its main purpose is to make the
Philippines free from Spain in a peaceful way.
He did not comply with his thesis presentation nor paid his corresponding bills and for
that he wasn’t awarded his Doctor’s diploma his reasons was in his letter to his family saying
that “ my doctorate is not very much value to me …. because although it is useful to a university
professor, yet, I believe they will never appoint me as such in the college of Santo Thomas. I say
the same thing of philosophy and letters which may serve also for professorship, but I doubt if
the Dominican fathers will grant it to me.
And other than this, to pursue his mission and continue his studies in Europe he sacrificed
his time away from his family. Rizal left without them knowing to seek knowledge because he
needed to do something for his country and for the people who has long been suffering in the
hands of the Spanish.
How important was his European education in his mission to give Filipinos back at home a better
life?
His study in Europe opened and broadened his mind, seeing European countries as
examples his own country should try to emulate. He saw how people practice their freedom and
explore natures of science without the limitations given by their parish priests. He saw how
progressive a country could be if only there’s no people who are limiting them from learning and
discovering new things. Aside from this there are a lot of realizations and observations that Rizal
was able to see and experience and all of these led him into establishing a group that condemn
the oppression and called out the hypocrisy of the friars and the inequality in their land. He
shared his ideologies that from submissive Filipino (Submissive because they were propagated
by the colonialist) to bold and conscious people of the country. “Rizal did not live to see the
fruits of his secret mission, but the ideas he embodied were central to the revolution that
led to the country’s independence. He was there the entire time.”
