In order to find out various dimensions of the parts of a knuckle joint, failures in different parts and at different cross-sections

are considered.
For each type of failure, one strength equation is written. Finally, these strength equations are used to find out various
dimensions of the knuckle joint.
Assume that the two rods and the pin are made of the same material having the permissible working stresses in tension,
shearing and crushing as 𝜎𝜎𝑡𝑡 , 𝜏𝜏 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 𝜎𝜎𝑐𝑐 respectively .
Failure of knuckle joint in various modes to be described now is based upon the assumptions (for the purpose of stress
analysis following assumptions are made)
• Components are subjected to static load only (axial tensile force)
• The force is uniformly distributed in various parts
• Effect of geometric stress concentration is neglected

SN Component Mode of failure

1 Rod and end In tension
2 Knuckle pin Shear failure (double shear) Crushing failure of pin in eye. Bending failure of pin. (This
(This occurs when the pin is Crushing failure of pin in fork. occurs when the pin is loose
tight in eye & fork) in eye & fork)
3 Eye Tensile failure Shear failure (double shear)

4 Fork Tensile failure Shear failure (double shear)

[when a tensile load is applied on rods, the pin bears against the eye end over semi- circular portion]
