1. In the Soil Erosion portal, look for information on causes of soil erosion and how it affects soil
fertility. Write a report on your findings.
First, erosion reduces the soil's capacity to hold water and provide plants with that
water. This leads to higher and more severe water stress. Secondly, erosion leads to loss of plant
nutrients that is removed from the soil. Since subsoils generally contain less nutrients than
topsoil, it is necessary to maintain the crop outputs using more fertilizer. In turn, that increases
the cost of production. Moreover, it is impossible to compensate for all nutrients lost when
topsoil erodes by adding fertilizer alone. Thirdly, Erosion reduces soil degradation, increased soil
eroding, surface screening and crushing yields. Seedlings have more time to pull through the soil
crusts. Water infiltration is reduced.
2. If you were to overhear a group of farmers complaining about how much money they must
spend on fertilizers, what suggestions would you give them for saving money? Include your
answer to this question, along with your reasoning, in your report.
Recycle, reduce and reuse saves the average farmer money very effectively. Most items on your
distance can be repurposed and used for another application, which, even though not designed,
will work properly. You can already save hundreds, even thousands, by using things instead of
buying new ones. Another method for saving money is learning better DIY skills, if you're in a
farm you'll all too well know how to repair things and get them back to work pretty quickly.
That's why so many farmers invest more time and effort than ever in learning more and more
complicated DIY skills, allowing them to repair everything that can be fixed instead of paying
someone else for it.
