Working With

Numbers in Science

Scientific
Notation
Today’s Learning Goals and
Success Criteria
■ I can state two reasons for using
scientific notation in science
calculations
■ I can state the two parts of a number
expressed in scientific notation
■ I can convert numbers that are in
scientific notation into standard notation
■ I can convert numbers that are in
standard notation into scientific notation
■ In science you may work with very large
numbers
– Astronomy (distances)
• 1 light year = 9.46 X 1015 m
• 1 parsec = 3.09 X 1016 m (3.25 light years)
– Chemistry (number of atoms/molecules)
• 6.02 X 1023 atoms in 12.0 g of carbon
• 1.20 X 1024 atoms in 26.0 g of sodium
■ You can also find yourself working with
very small numbers
– Biology
• diameter of a cell = 7.0 X 10-9 m
– Chemistry (size of atoms/molecules)
• Mass of an atom = 1.99 X 10-23 g
What is scientific notation?

■ Scientific notation is a way of

expressing very large numbers or
very small numbers.
■ It is most often used in “scientific”
calculations where the analysis
must be very precise.
Why use scientific notation?
■ For very large and very small
numbers, these numbers can be
converted into scientific notation to
express them in a more concise
form.
■ Numbers expressed in scientific
notation can be used in a
computation with far greater ease.
Scientific notation consists of
two parts:
■ A coefficient – a number between 1
and 10 (greater than or equal to 1
and less than 10)

■ A power of 10

coefficient x 10x
To change standard form to
scientific notation…
■ Place the decimal point so that
there is one non-zero digit to the
left of the decimal point.
■ Count the number of decimal
places the decimal point has
“moved” from the original number.
This will be the exponent on the 10.
Continued…

■ If the original number was less than

1, then the exponent is negative. If
the original number was greater
than 1, then the exponent is
positive.
Example 1

Given: 289 800 000

Answer: 2.89 800 000
(moved 8 spaces)
8
= 2.898 x 10
Example 2

Given: 0.000052
Answer: 5.2
(moved 5 spaces)
-5
= 5.2 x 10
Practice
Convert the following:
5
■ 320 000 = 3.2 x 10
■ 0.00000967 = 9.67 x 10-6
■ 51 014 000 = 5.1014 x 107
■ 0.0030578 = 3.0578 x 10-3
■ 0.00012 = 1.2 x 10 -4
To change scientific notation to
standard form…
■ Simply move the decimal point to
the right for positive exponent 10.
■ Move the decimal point to the left
for negative exponent 10.
■ (Use zeros to fill in places.)
Example 3

Given: 5.093 x 106

Answer: 5 093 000
(moved 6 places to the right)
Example 4

Given: 1.976 x 10-4

Answer: 0.0001976
(moved 4 places to the left)
Practice
Convert the following:
7
■ 6.05 x 10 = 60 500 000
■ 8.901 x 104 = 89 010
-6
■ 2.3 x 10 = 0.000 0023
■ 4.01 x 10-2 = 0.0401
