Subject: Connecting to a Computer System to Download Data

Report Number: 2.3.011

Analyzers with SN Less than 0815030001 – Serial Connectivity:

For EBG analyzers with serial numbers less than 0815030001, the analyzer can
connect to a PC for the purpose of transferring the serial data into a computer
using HyperTerminal. The information transferred will consist of the exact same
information that would be on the printout from the analyzer. The data transfer is
one way. There is no downloading from the computer to the analyzer. There is
not an option in the analyzer to start or stop the host connection.

The output of the analyzers is standard ASCII through an RS232 interface as per
the parameters in the Computer Connection section of the EBG Operator's
Manual. The data is not ASTM or LIS enabled. There is no STX, no ATX, no
delimiters and no controls.

For the EBG analyzer, the parameters for serial transmission are: transmission
rate 2400 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit and no parity.

To make the connection from the analyzer to the computer, the customer needs
to obtain a serial cable ordered from Medica as the pin outs are not standard.
For connection to a 9-pin RS232 port, the cable part number is 6537 for EBG.

The computer must be configured to receive this data through the port and we
advise using Hypertrm in the Windows environment.

More information is included in the Operator’s Manual Computer Connection

section. Beyond these recommendations, we do not offer further support for

003617-010R0
transferring serial data and recommend you consult the User Manual for the
computer system you are using.

Analyzers with SN Greater than 0815030001 – LIS connectivity:

For EBG analyzers with serial numbers greater than 0815030001, (software
version 10.0 or greater), there is the capability of downloading the data into an
LIS beginning with EBG SN 081503000. These analyzers are no longer capable
of downloading the serial data into HyperTerminal as described above.

The exact same cable specified for the serial connectivity above is also used to
connect the EBG to a LIMs system

Specific instructions for connecting the analyzer to the LIS system are available
in the LIS Interface Manual, (pn 09883-001) that is shipped with the analyzer.

One need to make sure the customer’s LIS software uses ASTM protocol.

One also needs to make sure the LIS function is enabled in the EBG analyzer.

From the Main Menu:

1. Press 5 for Second Menu
2. Press 1 for Standby
3. Press 7 - 7 - 7 to enter the QC Menu.
4. Press 3 Set mV’s/ LIS
5. Press 1 for Setup LIS
6. LIS ON? will be displayed
7. Press YES to confirm. ONE MOMENT…. will be displayed

Pressing YES in step 7 above causes the analyzer to send out an ENQ
character. If the connected LIS responds with an ACK character, the EBG prints
out ‘LIS On’, otherwise it prints ‘LIS Off’

If "LIS OFF?' is shown, press NO. This will make sure the LIS function is
enabled in the EBG analyzer.

One needs to make sure the cable from the EBG is connected to the correct port
on the LIS receiving system. After opening the LIS for the receiving system, the
operator need so make sure the correct data port, (COM1, COM2, etc.) on the
receiving system has been selected. The operator may need to select one data
port after another to determine which port is the one the data cable from the EBG
is connected to.

If the customer still has problems with connecting an EBG to a LIMs after
following the above suggestions, please send Technical Support screen shots of
the step-by-step installation process. Please also supply Technical Support with
the specifics, (brand/vendor/part number) of the LIS software the customer is

003617-010R0
using. The more information Technical Support receives, the more efficiently we
can better help the customer.
