Education:
Project Vidya
Kanker, Chattisgarh
The EY Foundation funds ‘Project Vidya’ being implemented by Development Initiatives. The project
aims at empowering villages to take ownership of the responsibility to ensure quality learning in the
villages and if required, contribute to support ‘remedial learning’ centres. Currently, the program
impacts 15,000 students across 150 schools. Of these students, 60% are from ST category.
Smart Class program
EYF has initiated support to Sampark Foundation for its Smart Class program in Chhattisgarh. The
grant is expected to support Sampark to implement this program across five districts — Balod,
Dhamtari, Kanker, Kondagaon and Bastar — covering around 6,105 schools and impacting about
3.95 lakh children. By replacing ineffective role-based learning with fun, innovative and easily
comprehensible teaching methods, Smart Class aims to make sure that 80% of children taking part in
the program can perform basic math operations and can speak and write 500 new words in English
within a year of its implementation.
Entrepreneurship
Empowering entrepreneurs
Building on our global commitment to building a better working world through our work with our
clients and our markets, we also invest in our communities. We invest to ensure that the skills and
characteristics required to enable businesses and societies to thrive are available.
We invest, in entrepreneurs, particularly women, who can help restore and create economic and
social wellbeing. This is handled primarily through organizing women into Self Help Groups (SHGs),
helping create bank linkages and then facilitating inter lending to promote income generating
activities on an entrepreneurial basis. Similarly we also invest in educating farmers on agricultural
best practices which in turn helps improve agricultural yield productivity.
EYF supports rural families across more than 2000 villages reaching out to more than 175,000
women through various initiatives.
Vocational training
The EY Foundation had supported the Dr. Reddy’s Foundation (DRF) by funding nine vocational
centres spread across the country, with potential to impact 2,875 students in 2013 and 2014. The
vocational training centres were low-cost models to enable the underprivileged to pursue their goals
on a self-sustaining basis.
In the past, EYF has funded 14 centres in 2012.
Capacity building
Our people at EY have helped Action for Ability Development and Inclusion, a non- government
organization, (NGO) in capacity-building as a pro-bono service.
Tax advice
EY has helped Naandi Foundation, a non-profit organization (NPO) , to obtain the 35 AC permissions
under the Income Tax Act, which provided a 100% tax rebate to the donors of Naandi’s mid-day
meal program in six states. Naandi currently feeds over 10, 00,000 children every day.
EY has also helped Kalanjiam Foundation, a non-profit organization (NPO), to obtain permission u/s
35AC of the Income Tax Act, which provides 100% tax rebate to the donors. Kalanjiam Foundation
works with Women Federations across many states.
Goonj
EYF is creating an online system as a pro bono service, to help Goonj, a NGO, track movement of
clothes and other material received and donor management.
Repaired computers
Repaired personal computers (PCs) in Municipal Corporation of Delhi schools at a cost of Rs. 350 to
Rs. 500 per PC, as compared to another corporate buying PCs at around Rs. 25,000 per PC.
Environment:
Taking voluntary affirmative action, we plan to be carbon neutral by 2020
In our quest to become carbon neutral, 100,000 saplings were planted in 2011; totally 790,000 trees
have been planted since 2011. 170,000 trees to be planted each year till EY is carbon neutral. While
the future growth of EY may result in enhanced carbon emission, the firm is committed to planting
such number of additional trees as are required to offset enhanced carbon emission, thereby,
ensuring that the firm continues to remain carbon neutral at all points of time. We also intend to
plant enough trees to offset the firm’s paper consumption.
Celebrating green birthdays is another important initiative to reduce our carbon impact on the
environment. Birthday of EY employees are always special and we make them even more
memorable by planting five saplings on their behalf through a tie-up with Grow-trees.
Also, only e-bills are accepted for telephone and mobile for reimbursement through our online
system. This saves approx. 700,000 sheets every year.
During the annual clothes collection drive in December 2016, for Goonj, an NGO, we reached out to
residential colonies, schools and colleges. Team EY collected more than 30,000 kg clothes.
Saving lives
Blood donation camps, an important part of our social responsibility calendar are also open to
employees of other organizations sharing the same office premises. In 2016, 852 people across our
offices donated blood.
Mentoring
The program allows recipients of our scholarship scheme to benefit from the advice of our
employees who mentor the scholarship awardees throughout the year. During these interactive
sessions, guidance is offered to the students on career planning, soft skills and lots more.
Matching contributions
When our people raise funds for their preferred causes through leveraging our ‘ Give Back to
Society’ (GBS) and 'Recommend a student for scholarship' initiatives, we help them do more by
matching their contributions. Both programs aim to support our people in their personal
engagement with community initiatives.
Give Back to Society
The program empowers each one of us to generate funds, resources and campaign for an NGO or
cause of our choice. Under the GBS program, on contributing to an NGO of your choice, at the
discretion of the organization, you will be eligible to a ‘Give Back to Society incentive – GBS
Incentive’ which will be equal to the contribution made by you (on a net of tax basis), subject to an
overall cap of Rs 180,000 per NGO.
Sponsor a student
Through this program, one can help children go to school. You can support the education of any
child you know and as many children you wish to educate. The EY Foundation (EYF) has a benchmark
of Rs. 9,000/- per annum for schooling. There is a higher benchmark for professional courses like
Engineering etc.
Payroll giving
The 'Give As You Earn' is a very simple and easy way of supporting a host of charities and causes. All
that an employee needs to do is issue instructions on the amount to be donated and the preferred
cause, be it animal welfare, care for the elderly, disability, environment, special needs, healthcare or
livelihood promotion. The contributions are subsequently disbursed to a credible NGO on behalf of
the donor.
Run to raise funds and hopes
Combining the passion for sports with the zeal to support a social cause, our people participate in
Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata, and Mumbai marathons to raise pledges for various causes.
Teaching and learning
In the past, our people visited the Saksham Siksha Kendra in Gurgaon thrice a week to help students
improve their English language skills and general knowledge awareness.
NGO melas
NGO melas in our offices during festivals such as Holi, Raksha Bandhan, Diwali, Christmas and New
Year are an opportunity for NGOs to showcase and sell handicraft and other products created by the
needy people they support through their initiatives. The annual Diwali gift for our people since 2009
is being sourced from Himjoli – an NGO that works with producer groups in Uttarakhand to reduce
migration to cities by creating sustainable jobs in villages in the area.
These are simple ways in which we combine a very practical need with supporting a good cause.
While our people can easily purchase things they need to buy during festivals, for the NGO it’s a way
to supplement their fund-raising efforts.
