Concept and Theme of the Project- The theme message that our group chose for the project is “The
Joy of Giving”. Our group wanted to make a positive impact on the audience, making them aware
of some of the unsung heroes of India who have made a difference to society. With this social
message in mind, after much research, we were able to shortlist 3 induviduals who would suit the
purpose of this project from different fields, namely Dr. Devi Shetty from the Healthcare industry,
Anand Kumar from the education field and Narayan Krishnan, who is a chef turned social worker.
By using electro-acoustic and related performance mechanisms, our aim was to showcase these 3
heroes and fit them into our theme to the best of our abilities.
A video has been used for this purpose, and we needed to showcase each of the heroes as mentioned
above in a different light, using their videos which were youtube and slides that contained the
required content about them. Then, we planned to use an electronically produced track to support
and sync with the video as backing track for us to perform over. This track would then govern the
way we planned to approach the live aspect of the performance, including the instrument choices
and short acting elements to get our message, “The Joy of Giving” across to the audience. For that
purpose, we proposed various roles for each of the group participants based on their profile as
described below.
Group Members and their profiles- Our group consisted of 5 members who had to be equally and
appropriately accommodated into the live aspect of the performance in order to effectively
showcase the theme we had in mind.
Vinodtha Maduraiarasi is a singer, who was able to lend her voice to the portion of the song that
contained operatic and aria like textures.
Vinay Bala is a Pianist, who also is also a bass singer and hence, we could accommodate him into
the choral textures of the piece, and he was also able to fit the role of playing a teacher when the
storyline of Anand Kumar was being conveyed in the video. Hence he conveyed Anand Kumar’s
message that was present in the video on the blackboard that would reinforce the image of someone
from the education field.
Parth Patel, is a multi instrumentalist, who incorporated the Harmonium, and the Taiko Drum into
our collective live performance, other than lending his voice as a tenor singer to some of the vocal
parts of the track.
Prashanth is Pianist, sound engineer, vocalist, composer and composed the full track for the project.
handled the mixing components of the live performance, enabling the pre processed vocals,
dynamic panning and level balancing, to come out in the overall performance.
I was able to play the glockenspiel in order to help fill up the high frequency spectrum that was
subdued in the backing track and also got information on each heroes of India who have made a
difference to society.
Live elements were used in the tracks in many places in order to finally increase the track and give
it an acoustic sharp quality. These elements are as follows :
The Initial Vocal chants were sung by Vinay Bala to add a bass texture to the single voice
section in the backing track. They were also sung by Vinodtha Parth and myself only for the
oohm section then I had to play the Glockenspeil.
The Quotations were spoken by the performers in an off sync manner with Parth, Vinodtha,
Vinay and Prashanth, speaking the quote at different times, with different mic processing for
each vocalist.
I was playing the Glockenspiel for the opening Joy of Giving Theme that provides the
backing for the Dalai Lama quotation.
The Taiko Drums was played by Parth Patel during the Dr. Devi Shetty and the Anand
Kumar sections of the song which added more bass to the Electronic Aria track
Vinodtha Maduraiarasi and Prashanth sang the 2 part harmony to “Non Nobis” live, with
processed vocals using the Ring shifter and Waves Plugins like the CLA Vocals and some
light reverb and imaging plugins.
Parth Patel, added some light Harmonium notes towards the end of the piece in order to fill
up the gaps in the backing track to make it more smooth and seamless.
The onboard knobs of the Presonus Analog Mixer was used to control the dynamic balance
and panning expressions throughout the track.
Conclusion- We put lot of the work in this project which was based on the audio engineering
knowledge gained from the classes throughout the year. Mixing knowledge, and automation of the
tracks at the EMP stage, balancing and panning experimentation using the Presonus Mixer, was
based on the various practical sessions that were spent in the studio learning about such the basic
elements of a mix – Dynamics, Stereo Imaging, Frequency and Effects. This project has improved
on our understanding of recording, mixing and mastering and has added another dimension of
performance to the mix. In this project I learnt about the important team effort. After the
performance we had gained the experience of performing with Logic Pro Software and also we had
gained the knowledge on how a live performance work with synthesizer and sampler instruments
effects. We had gained the experience to work together on a electro-acoustic project.
