Topic: Impact of leadership on Business Success

1.3: Objectives of the Study

There are many challenges that today’s organizations face to justify their existence. Some of
these challenges include staying competitive; growing shareholder value, and sustainability.
These organizations participate and implement a magnitude of initiatives to achieve their
objective, whatever those objectives might be. To achieve these objectives, organizations are
often faced with the challenge of finding the right skills and leadership to deliver the desired
results. For example, in today’s mobile telecommunications company, South Africa provides
modern and efficient facilities to urban areas, including cellular and internet services. 20 years
ago, the telecommunications network in South Africa introduced the world of cellular
communications, and today the cellular industry continues to grow from strength to strength
providing improved technology every day. Currently, five cellular providers form part of this
competitive industry.

The study aimed to find out the impact of leadership behaviors on organizational performance.
The main objectives of the study were to find out the concepts and types of leadership behaviors
and investigate the impact of leadership behavior on organizational performance in the case
company D&R Cambric Communication. The research also described the performance of the
organizations in the service sector because of good leadership qualities. The leadership theories
and different behaviors of leadership were discussed at the beginning of the research. Both the
qualitative and quantitative research method was used in the study. The survey questionnaire was
sent to the employees and an interview with the CEO of D&R Cambric Communication was
conducted for the research. The empirical study was conducted by sending a questionnaire to the
employees of D&R Cambric Communication. There were 29 respondents out of a total of 54
employees in the company. The results-driven from the research showed that there is a strong
impact of leadership behaviors on organizational performance. The behavior of the CEO of the
D&R Cambric Communication with the employees of the company was one of the major reasons
for the company’s success. Leadership has many aspects such as attitude towards objectives and
operations or representation of the company. All of these aspects link together to achieve a
competitive advantage. Probably the most important factor is the influence of leadership on other
members of the business, particularly on the followers. Finally, leadership behaviors were found
out to be very important key factors for the growth of the companies in the service sectors.

i. To determine the impact of leadership in organization and performance.

ii. To examine the relationship that exists between leadership and organization performance.

1.4: Limitations of the Study

Ghauri and Gronhaug 2010 suggest that it is very important for academic studies to define the
limitations of the study. Therefore, it is important to spell here the limitations of the present
study before proceeding further.

Firstly, an important limitation of the present study is that it will only focus on the two types of
leadership behaviors that are relational behavior and task behavior. Further, another limitation is
that the present study merely focuses on the role of leadership in the context of the service sector.
So, manufacturing organizations are not part of the current study. As discussed earlier in the
introduction part, there is a limited understanding of the role of leadership in the context of the
service sector. So, the present study, while investigating the impact of leadership on
organizational performance in the context of the service sector, will contribute to the existing
knowledge on the role of leadership in the context of the service sector.

When a project is initiated there are three factors to take into consideration: time, cost, and
quality. Time is defined as the timeline for which the outputs need to be met; cost is defined as
the amount of budget allocated to the particular project, which needs to be adhered to,
considering the scope of work; and quality is defined as the standard of the outputs. In reality,
project managers find it challenging to ensure that all three factors are met simultaneously.
Hence, projects or certain project deliverables often fail to owe to one of the three factors not
being met according to the organization’s objectives.

Sometimes organizations are too concerned with achieving their ultimate objectives that they
overlook severe consequences where budgets are over-run; they have limited resources and time
constraints, which all lead to a negative effect on quality.
Tracy (2007:129) states that four main concerns within project management cause projects to
fail, which are described below:

- Not enough time set aside for certain tasks to be completed;

- The assumption that there will be no obstacles in the way of completing a

project successfully. Projects fail to owe to no extra time and resources
forecasted;

- Project managers tend to rush projects to safeguard the limitation around money,
time, and quality. This often leads to errors, which lead to poor quality; and

- Project managers take on too many responsibilities or place too much

responsibility on their team members.

Presently, the demand for project work is much greater with the limited supply of skilled
resources within organizations. In today’s economy, people are faced with many financial
difficulties, whilst they have to employ more skilled resources to reduce project failure.

The limitations of this study will be established using the following parameters. Several of them
are pointed below:

1. This study will be a descriptive study that uses a survey to collect data. The data collected will
come from individual entrepreneurs who will voluntarily participate, and the number of
responses can limit the results.

2. The participants will be limited to entrepreneurs whose organizations operate within the
metropolitan service region including a major city and outlying communities within a 50- mile
radius of a Midwestern city with a population of fewer than 500,000 people in the United States.

3. This study will be limited to the leadership styles of transformational, transactional, and
laissez-faire leadership as identified using the MLQ, as well as the entrepreneurial leadership
style as identified using the ENTRELEAD scale. These leadership styles interact and affect how
individuals lead their businesses.
4. This study will be limited to the demographic factors of gender, education level, industry type,
years of operation, the number of employees at the organization, current role in business, and
profitability.
