CINDERELLA

Charles Perrault
He was born at January 12, 1628 in Paris, France and he died May 15/16, 1703 in
Paris. Perrault is a French poet, prose writer and storyteller and a leading
member of Academia Française, who played a prominent part of the Ancients
and Modern in a literary controversy. He is best known in fairy stories for children
like Contes de ma mere l‟oye.

Synopsis
There‟s a nobleman got a chance to remarry again in a woman who has
two daughters and has bad behavior, this nobleman has a very kindly daughter
like his past wife. After days, they treated Cinderella „Cinder bottom‟ as a maid.
Then the king‟s son sent an invitation to everyone to come in a ball, after
hearing that, the step daughters get a chance to prepare well. The ball was
arrived and her step mother and sisters go to the ball, she began to cry, and the
godmother appeared to help her, she asked Cinderella to get what she needs
and she transformed Cinderella into beautiful woman but she warned her at
12‟midnight everything will go back into normal. As she arrived at the ball
everyone gasped and murmur even the prince stunned to her beauty, they
danced and eat together, and when the clock strikes, she immediately go

home. She thanked the godmother and talk to her steps sisters about the ball.
On the second day of the ball, she‟s getting more beauty but she forgot about
the warning and she accidentally slipped her glass slippers.
The King‟s son announced that he would marry the girl who will fit the foot
on the glass slippers. Everyone tries to fit the glass slippers even the steps sisters,
but she recognized it and she said she wants to try it, and by that the glass
slippers fitted to her and the godmother appeared and transform her into
beautiful woman. The steps sisters asked for the forgiveness that they‟ve done to
her, and she kissed and forgive them. The Prince married her and she invited her
step mother and daughters to be with her in the palace and also married with
the 2 nobleman in the court.

Point of View
Within this version of Cinderella, the authors‟ point of view is third person
that she wants to show the value of everything in this world. That will start at the
beginning with hard work and effort before you reach the top or success.

Symbol
The glass slippers is a symbol of ownership, in this story, no one can ever fit
on the glass slippers because they didn‟t owned it. But Cinderella claimed and
tries it, and it fitted with her feet because she owned it at the first place.

Setting and mood of the story

The first setting is the Attic, where Cinderella slept and rest after a long
tiring day; it has only lumpy matters to lay, while her steps sisters took her
beautiful room.
The second setting is the Chimney, where she after done doing the
household she goes there in the corner of the chimney and used to be. This
chimney also known as cinder bottom, that‟s why she came up with that
nickname.
The third setting is the Palace, where Cinderella came to the ball and she
met the prince. The palace is the one who witnessed her happiness and get a
chance to marry the prince.

The mood of the story shows, the love or romance of the prince and
Cinderella, magical fairytale where she transform and also the animals by the
help of godmother and the rivalry among those steps sisters.

Conclusion
Therefore, I conclude that the version of this Cinderella is a good story to
tell in children‟s. It can help children to imagine themselves as Cinderella. I‟ve
enjoy reading this because it gives me an excitement in every events of this
story. This story gives a benefit of value in everything, that you cannot get what
you want in a snap of finger instead you need to put an effort.

ASHPUTTLE

Jakob and Wilhelm Grim

Jakob was born on January 04, 1785 and Wilhelm was born on February 24, 1786
at Hanau, Hesse-Kassel of Germany, they are German folklorist and linguist.
Before that they studied law at the University of Marburg (1802-1806) to follow
the path of their father. They were influenced by German Romanticism; the
Grimm‟s brother work compiled in the book of Kinder-und Hausmarchen a
Children‟s and Household Tales and after this they became Grimms‟ Fairy Tales.

Synopsis
There's a young girl who always visit the grave of her mother. When the
winter came her father remarried with two daughters with beautiful faces but
their hearts were ugly and black and treated her as a slave. At night, she rest at
the ashes and she called her Ashputtle.
One day her father was going to fair, and she told him to bring the first
branch and to be back. After that, she planted it beside the grave. On the
other hand, the king arranged 3 gathering ball for all beautiful girls and his son
will choose for a bride. When the ball comes, Ashputtle cried beside the tree
and grave and wish for the things that she need to the ball, and the doves
granted her wish in every time. At the first and second ball, the Prince stunned

7

with the beauty of Ashputtle and he danced with her all night, and Ashputtle
ran away in able to go home. On the third night, the prince played a trick, and
Ashputtle slipped her left slipper on the staircase.
Next morning, they search the owner of the golden slipper, the 2 step
sisters cut off the part of their foot in able to fit, but by 5he help of the doves
they found out that they're not the owner. By that, Ashputtle was able to try the
slipper and the dove called out that she is the one. On the wedding day, the
dove pecked out the eyes of the step sisters that will punish with blindness.

Point of View
The Grimms‟ brother used third person point of view, that they narrate all
the events of this story. That they want to emphasize some important details in
being a honest person however, there was unnecessary events within story.

Symbol
The dove is the symbol of this story because the dove symbolizes the
mother of Cinderella that she will always watches her in heaven above and will
guide her in her right path of her life.

Setting and mood of the story

The first setting is at the grave where the mother of Cinderella rest, and
she always visit it. The second is the kitchen where she always does all the dishes
and where the doves help her. And the last is the palace where she met and
danced with the prince. Honesty is the mood of this story because it shows the
truthfulness of being an owner of anything, like the golden shoes.

Conclusion
Therefore, this kind of story is an appropriate style to tell in young children
because there is unnecessary events that gives a parental guidance of a
parents. This version of Cinderella it gives me little bit creepy feeling, because of
some scene like cutting the part of the toe but overall it also gives a benefit of
honesty.

WHEN THE CLOCK STRIKES

Tanith Lee
She was born on September 19, 1947 at London, England, UK and she died May
24, 2015. She was a British writer and author of 100 novels, 14 collections and
almost 300 short stories. She writes science fiction, horror, fantasy and also the
four radio plays broadcast by the BBC and more.

Synopsis
There was a rich merchant who had a daughter and wife, but the wife is a
witch. They performed a ritual to curse the Duke and duke got sick. But one day
the merchant suspected his wife, so the wife told her daughter to continue and
the wife killed herself for the sake of her daughter. They beg to Satan to give her
daughter a power, and then the silk merchant re-married again with two
daughters.
Years later, the duke died horribly, after years again the prince arranged

Then the clock strikes and Ashella goes and chant a curse therewith the
clang or stroke of the clock. After the conjuration of death vanished and there
was a thing left and it was woman‟s glass shoe. And then the prince search
every woman to try the glass shoes, but no one fit it because the glass shoes
constantly changing if there is another woman try to fit in. But the glass shoe
broke into its fragments because of the prince.

Point of View
The author narrates the story by introducing first the clock strikes and then
she starts it with the story that anchored to when the clock strikes.

Symbol
The golden shoe and the clock are the symbolism of this story because
first the golden shoe is a token of love, and the clock strike is symbolizes the
value of time.

Setting and mood of the story

The palace is the main setting of this story, because it witnessed the some
parts of the event. And when the clock strike Ashella began to chant a curse.
This story is full of revenge because of what happened to the mother of Ashella.

Conclusion
This kind of story is appropriate to the matured children because of the
content of this story is vague. It needed a parental guidance if ever young
children want to read this. Therefore, this story shows determine of life, that they
will do anything to do what they want although this story focuses on the
revenge.

A CHINESE CINDERELLA

Tuan Ch’eng Shih

A Chinese book written (850-860 A.D) in the earliest datable version of Cinderella
story. However, it began with Waley, Arthur essay on March 1947 in edition of
Folk-Lore. Tuan is a man recorder of the tale and he held a high post in office
arranging in the ceremonies associated with imperial ancestor worship.

Synopsis
There‟s was an intelligent and good at making pottery on the wheel, and
she is Yeh-hsien, she was ill-treated by her stepmother. In the woods, she got a
fish and that fish it grew bigger every day, but one day the stepmother killed the
fish. Then she found the fish bone at the dung-hill, she kept it and she can pray
what she wants and it will grant.
When the festival came she lost the one golden shoe, in T‟o-han the cave
man sold the shoe to the ruler of T‟o-han. The king searches the all women who
have small foot, and then Yeh-hsien put the shoe and it was true that she
owned it.
By that she became the chief wife, and the king became greedier and
he treasures the jade without limit the fish bone. But by the next year, the fish

11

bone didn‟t response in any prayers of the king and then it washed away by the
tide.

Point of View
Tuan, gives a lot of important phases or situation of the story, he want to
emphasize that all things need to give a value on it. As a reader, this story gives
me a little bit Goosebumps because of the fish and the greediness of a person.

Symbol
The fish has ability to fight the water current and it symbolize the strength
in time and adversity, like Yeh-Hsieh because she was able to conquer the
challenges in her life.

Setting and mood of the story

The Wu cave is the place where the family and other cave mans lived.
Second the pond, where she found the fish and the last place is T‟o-han were
the cave man sold the shoe to the king.
This story shows the greediness of a man in one thing like the fishbone he
was fond out of wealth.

Conclusion
Therefore, this version of Cinderella is quiet interested because it shows the
one of deathly sins that also needs a parental guidance. However, this story
gives a moral value of limitation in everything that we have. Within this story, I‟ve
realized that everything in this world always have limitation that you cannot get
all what you want.

THE MAIDEN, THE FROG, AND THE CHIEF SON

An African “Cinderella”
This version of fairytale was recorded in (West African) Hausa language and
published, originally by Frank Edgar (1911).

Synopsis
There was a man who had two wives and each had a daughter. The
other wife died because of illness. The woman always go to the bush to get
woods, and she need to pound up the fura and to stir the tuwo. This woman had
an elder brother who always invited to eat a food. When the festival came, the
frog appeared to the woman and said “You‟ve been a good person to us”.
And by that, the frog swallowed and vomits her to give her a beautiful things
and she guide and help her to what she need to do.
In other hand, the chief son show the maiden and he started too danced
and to talk with her. In other day, the maiden left the right golden shoe at the
festival. And the chief son found her because of it. When she became a wife,
the frog tells her what she will do in palace.

13
City College of Calamba

Department of Arts, Sciences, and Teacher Education

Point of View
The authors point of view is the function of magic into materialistic to
enhance the beauty of an individual. That‟s why this story or the chief son felt in
love with this maiden. Within this story, I realized or felt the value of materials that
we used, that we should handle it with a care especially with a guidance of
others.

Symbol
The frog symbolize a guardian angel, because this frog always on the
beside of maiden until she get married with the chief son, the frog helps and
guide her in anything that she need to do.

Setting and mood of the story

The festivals were the frog appears and start to help her. Second the
palace, where she met the chief son. The mood of this story is being an
obedience person in every task to do.

Conclusion
This version of Cinderella is little bit pretty because it shows a submission in
any guidelines. Therefore, if ever you follow the rules or guidelines there will be a
reward after.

THE ROUGH-FACED GIRL

A Native American
This story was originally from the Algonquin language that the Native American
used as medium of communication. They lived in Eastern Woodlands or United
States and also in the northern, semi-arctic areas of present–day called
Canada.

Synopsis
At the village, there was a human being but he is invisible one, he has a
sister and that sister walk with any girl to ask if they are able to see her brother,
but no one can tell the truth. There‟s a man and has three daughters, the
second daughter was kinder than the other sisters, she is Oochigeaskw the
roughed faced girl. The sisters were able to meet the sister and the invisible one
and asked them if they see him but they are lying. The poor little girl always gets
a bad compliment, but the sister of the invisible one helped her. And she asked
her, “do you see him” and she said, “Yes, indeed”, and the sister ask a few
questions and she tells the truth. By that she told Oochigeaskw to take the wife
seat in the wigwam and she became the wife of the invisible one.

15
City College of Calamba
Dalubhasaan ng Lungsod ng Calamba

Department of Arts, Sciences, and Teacher Education

Point of View
The authors‟ point of view wants to show, that whoever you are or how
your face is not good but your heart is pure in beauty that‟s the matter.
However, having a beautiful face but your attitude is bad that‟s not right thing
to do. Within this story, I felt the happy for the main character Cinderella
because she became a wife and she didn‟t changed at all.

Symbol
Within this story, the wife seat it‟s symbolize the freedom of truth and the
success.

Setting and mood of the story

The village of wigwam where Cinderella lived and the girls came from. This
story shows the mood of honesty because in the story the sister of the invisible
one always asked a question in every girl, she was trying if they can tell the truth
and be the one to be soon to be bride of the invisible one.

Conclusion
Therefore, this story I highly recommend this to the young children
because it shows the value of honesty. And to tell and depend the rights of its
people.

17
City College of Calamba

Department of Arts, Sciences, and Teacher Education

Point of View
The author used the third person point of view, that he narrates the fancy
story of Cinderella. It shows the fantasy of s person in some cases. Its feel like I
am also in that fantasy world and I like to be her because Cinderella
experienced the magical of the world and to live happily ever after.

Symbol
The glass slippers show that Cinderella has a pure and good heart, this
glass slippers symbolism of uniqueness above all people or things. And also the
mice it symbolizes the strength in small packages that these mice can make
things possible even though they are small.

Setting and mood of the story

The faraway land is the town house of Cinderella and was the step
mother and sisters treated her like a maid. Within this place, the garden
witnessed the sadness and magical life of Cinderella. And of course the palaces
where she met the prince and were she enjoy the life.
And this story shows the mood of happiness in the new life of Cinderella
with her Prince and the animals.

Conclusion
I conclude that this kind of Walt Disney Cinderella is a famous fairytale,
especially in children‟s. I will recommend this story in some children or parents to
watch or to read this kind of fairytale story. It shows the benefit of determination
to prove that she is right and she is the one.

CINDERELLA

Anne Sexton
Sexton‟s was born on November 09, 1928 at Newton, MA and died on October
04, 1974. When she gave birth on her second daughter, the doctor encouraged
her to pursue being poetry. And she‟s been one of America‟s outstanding
contemporary poets.

Synopsis
Cinderella is very kind, but her step mother and sisters were not because
of their hearts filled with dark and they treated her as a maid. The father came
back with the twig of tree, and then she planted it beside the grave. In every
time she wished, the dove drop like an egg.
Next day, the ball came were the prince search for a bride. But she can‟t
go because of them. By the help of doves she can go. At the third day of
celebration, her gold shoe stuck upon the floor.
They searched every girl but the sisters sliced the part of their toe to fit but
the dove said, “Looked upon her toe it is full of blood”. After that Cinderella tried
it and it was fitted. And at the wedding ceremony, the dove pecked their eyes
out and the Prince and Cinderella lived happily ever after.

19
City College of Calamba
Dalubhasaan ng Lungsod ng Calamba

Department of Arts, Sciences, and Teacher Education

Point of View
Anne Sexton used her ironic tones and she used a lot of figurative
language to relate in speakers feeling in a constant interjection within the story.
She exploits the story of Grims Brother to give more realistic and anti-rags-to
riches story. Within this story, it gives me to think out of the context and to
analyze the story deeper.

Symbol
The white dove symbolize the dead mother of Cinderella because she
always visits the grave of her mother and also the tree, in this story, the dove is a
“him”, while the egg represents the rose of her mother.
The marriage market is the metaphor and it was to take away the reader
from the story because the reader needs to think other types of an occasion in
her mind.

Setting and mood of the story

First the grave, were Cinderella mother rest in peace and when she
planted the twig of the tree. Second is the palace, were the ball occurred and
Cinderella met and experience to dance with the prince.
And the mood of this story is the honesty of an individual because in the
story the stepsisters claimed that they‟ve owned the gold shoe.

Conclusion
This version of Cinderella of Sexton is too much matured for the reader at
the young age but not all the situation. It also needs a parental guidance to
explain and to guide their children in some events of this story.

THE POLITICALLY CORRECT

James Finn Garner

Garner was born on 1960 and he is American writer and satirist based in
Chicago. He is the author of this story that became best seller in England and
Canada and has been translated into more than 25 languages and Tea Party
Fairytales, Honk Honk and My Darling and many more.

Synopsis
There was a young woman named Cinderella, who always works hard
like unpaid laborer because of her step mother and sisters. One day, the Prince
sent an invitation for fancy dress ball. When the ball arrived Cinderella can‟t go
because of them, but the fairy god person appeared and help her to go to the
party.
At the party, all men was full of lust in their faces because of Cinderella,
the price got angry because of they acted, and the party was in trouble. When
the clock strikes at 12 o‟clock they didn‟t hear it because of the commotion.
Cinderella beautiful gown an slippers disappeared, she‟s not ashamed of it
instead, “Kill me now if you want at least I‟ll die in peace”. The crowd didn‟t kill

Department of Arts, Sciences, and Teacher Education

her but instead they stripped their uncomfortable part of their dress and started
to celebrate.
After the celebration, the clothing started to tailor comfortable dresses for
women, they called it CinderWear and by that they lived happily ever after.

Point of View
The authors‟ point of view within this version, he shows years ago, that all
girls have no authority or they don‟t have a freedom to do all things that they
want to do. In reading this story, I felt overwhelm because this day, all women
and men are equal to do all things.

Symbol
The CinderWear is the symbolism of freedom because all girls are free to
wear comfortable attire in every time that they want.

Setting and mood of the story

The palace is the main event or setting of this story, where Cinderella
enjoy being a beautiful women in short period of time and also transformed into
an ordinary person. And this place, witnessed the freedom of all women.
The mood of this story is the women empowerment, were the girls decide
to be one and to fight what they want.

Conclusion
Therefore, this version of Cinderella is really a pretty good one especially
to those women who always frustrate or has low esteem. This story can be
motivational genre in some people and it will give enlightenment.
