[Application of Wall and Insulation Materials on Green Building]

Material Structure and Nano Material

1- Fiberglass

Fiberglass is an extremely popular insulation material. One of its key advantages is value.

Fiberglass insulation has a lower installed price than many other types of insulating materials

and, for equivalent R-Value performance (i.e., thermal resistance), it is generally the most cost-

effective option when compared to cellulose or sprayed foam insulation systems. Because of how

it is made, by effectively weaving fine strands of glass into an insulation material, fiberglass can

minimize heat transfer. It is essential when installing fiberglass that the necessary safety

equipment is worn, as glass powder and tiny shards of glass are formed, which could potentially

cause damage to the eyes, lungs, and skin. Fiberglass is an excellent non-flammable insulation

material, with R-values ranging from R-2.9 to R-3.8 per inch

2- Polystyrene.

Advantages of Polystyrene foam insulation board

1 Light. The bulk EPS density of Chinese standard is 18~22kg/m3, people in Europe only use the

EPS board with a density of 15kg/m3;2 Low thermal conductivity. Because of the air-filled hole

group structure, the spread of air and the heat conduction coefficient can be prevented under

0.039;3. Good anti-impact ability. 98% of foam insulation board space is filled with air, then it

has enough capacity to buffer the impact of the outside world by changing the shape;4. Low

water absorption. Studies have shown that humidity will affect the thermal and mechanical

properties, and the low water absorption of EPS insulation board helps to maintain excellent

properties;5 Recyclable. Polystyrene foam insulation board has the highest recycling degree

among the plastics;6. Freon is not used in the production process;7. EPS insulation board has the

lowest energy consumption of the entire plastic life cycle.

NANOTECHNOLOGY-BASED THERMAL INSULATION MATERIALS.

1- Expanded Polystyrene Products, Including Graphite Powder Additive.

2- Vacuum Insulated Panel (VIP).

3- Aerogel Thermal Insulation.

4- Nano-ceramic thermal insulation coatings.

Nano-ceramic.

Nano-ceramic thermal insulation coatings are considered to be the most critical nanotechnology-

based thermal insulation material. Architects are quite distrustful of this material. Unlike other

materials, nano-ceramic thermal insulation coatings can produce an adequate thermal insulation

value of building structures in an extremely thin layer. Their high thermal resistance does not

depend on their thickness (like traditional materials) but on their high surface heat transfer

resistance. Because of the contradictory technical details in the special literature and the product

catalogues of manufacturers, more thermodynamic tests and experiments are needed for these

materials, which can provide useful information and technical parameters to practicing architects

for planning building constructional joints and also utilizable technical parameters for heat

transfer and other building energy.
